Mew VMAX has two different Japanese identities, and the card number is the only reliable way to tell them apart. Card #40 in Fusion Arts (S8) is where Mew VMAX first appeared in Japanese. Card 280/184 in VMAX Climax (S8b) is a separate secret rare reprint of the same character, released later in the same era — and it’s the version listed here as a PSA 10 graded single.
This guide is a dedicated identification and buying reference for the 280/184 UR specifically: what set it’s actually from, how its numbering works, why it’s easy to confuse with the Fusion Arts original, and where to see our own graded copy.
Mew VMAX 280/184 UR is the VMAX Climax (S8b) secret/Ultra Rare reprint of Mew VMAX — not the Fusion Arts (S8) #40 original Japanese print. VMAX Climax released December 3, 2021, with a printed set total of 184 cards; secret cards like this UR carry numbers beyond that total, which is how you can tell at a glance that 280/184 is a chase card rather than a base-set print. A graded example is listed here, PSA 10 Mew VMAX 280/184 UR (更新：目前售罄 — 可透過 Quick Order 申請補貨), currently listed at ¥32,230 (~$203 at ¥159/USD).
Yen figures are converted at ¥159/USD (September 2026). Our own PSA 10 listing is the only price referenced in this guide — we have not collected third-party secondary-market prices for either print.
What Is the Mew VMAX 280/184 UR?
Mew VMAX is a Psychic-type Pokémon VMAX card. It first appeared in English in the Fusion Strike expansion (114/264). In Japanese, the base/original printing is card #40 in Fusion Arts (S8), illustrated by 5ban Graphics.
The card listed and graded here — Mew VMAX 280/184 UR — is not that Fusion Arts print. It is a secret/Ultra Rare reprint of the same character from a later Japanese subset, VMAX Climax (S8b). The two cards share the character and the VMAX name, but they are different print runs from different sets, and collectors regularly mix them up because of that shared name.
Fusion Arts Original vs. VMAX Climax Secret Rare
Because both cards are called “Mew VMAX” in Japanese product listings, the card number is the only reliable way to tell them apart. Here’s the identification reference:
| Set | Card Number | Rarity | Note | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Original Japanese print | Fusion Arts (S8) | #40 | Regular | Base/original Japanese printing; illustrated by 5ban Graphics. |
| Our listing | VMAX Climax (S8b) | 280/184 | UR (secret rare) | Secret/chase card numbered beyond the set’s printed total of 184. |
| English cross-reference only | Lost Origin Trainer Gallery | TG30/TG30 | Secret rare | Cited only to confirm the alt-art identity — not a Japanese card and not stock we carry. |
If your card — or a listing you’re checking — shows a number in the 280s with a denominator of 184, you’re looking at the VMAX Climax secret rare, the same print listed and graded here. A card numbered 40 is the Fusion Arts original: a different print entirely, from a different set.
Set Details: VMAX Climax (S8b)
VMAX Climax (Japanese: ハイクラスパック VMAXクライマックス) is the 8th Japanese subset of the Sword & Shield Era, released December 3, 2021. Its printed/main set total runs to 184 cards — the exact denominator you see on our card’s number, 280/184.
That numerator-above-184 pattern is standard for this Sword & Shield-era generation: secret and chase-rarity cards are numbered starting after the last standard card in the set, rather than restarting at 1. A card numbered 280 in a 184-card set isn’t a printing error — it’s the expected convention for where secret rares like this UR sit.
How to Identify the 280/184 Print
Three checks confirm you have the VMAX Climax secret rare rather than the Fusion Arts original:
- Card number. Look for “280/184” printed on the card, not a bare “40,” which identifies the Fusion Arts original.
- Set marking. The card should carry VMAX Climax (S8b) set identification, not Fusion Arts (S8).
- Rarity tier. VMAX Climax classifies this print as UR (Ultra Rare) — a secret-rarity tier above the set’s standard rarities.
There is currently no indexed reference image for the VMAX Climax secret-rare card numbers in this range, which is why the images above show related Fusion Arts prints of the same set family for illustration instead. The card number and set name printed on the physical card remain the fastest way to confirm what you’re holding.

This card is listed as a PSA 10 graded single, sourced and shipped from Tokyo. It’s currently listed at ¥32,230 (~$203) (更新：目前售罄 — 可透過 Quick Order 申請補貨), and grading means condition is already independently verified — useful for a secret rare where the textured foil surface can pick up print lines or edge wear easily.

常見問題
What is the Mew VMAX 280/184 UR card?
It’s a secret/Ultra Rare reprint of Mew VMAX from the Japanese VMAX Climax (S8b) subset, released December 3, 2021. It is a different print from the original Fusion Arts (S8) #40 Japanese release of the same card.
Is the Mew VMAX 280/184 UR the same as the Fusion Strike Mew VMAX?
No. The English Fusion Strike print (114/264) and the Japanese Fusion Arts #40 print are the original release of Mew VMAX. The 280/184 UR is a separate secret rare reprint from the later VMAX Climax set.
Why is the card numbered 280 in a 184-card set?
VMAX Climax has a printed/main set total of 184 cards. Secret and chase-rarity cards, including this UR, are numbered starting after that total rather than restarting — a standard convention for this Sword & Shield-era generation, not a printing error.
How can I tell the VMAX Climax secret rare apart from the Fusion Arts original?
Check the card number: “280/184” identifies the VMAX Climax UR, while a bare “40” identifies the Fusion Arts original. The set marking on the card (VMAX Climax vs. Fusion Arts) confirms it.
Where can I buy a PSA 10 Mew VMAX 280/184 UR?
A PSA 10 graded example is currently listed at ¥32,230 (about $203) (更新：目前售罄 — 可透過 Quick Order 申請補貨), shipped from Tokyo. Related singles and restock requests can be combined through our Quick Order page.
