Necrozma Pokemon Card Guide: Japanese Printings Guide

Necrozma Pokemon Card Guide: Japanese Printings Guide

Necrozma’s Japanese card history runs in a straight line through the Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon story arc: a base Necrozma-GX in 2017, its Dusk Mane and Dawn Wings forms a few months later, the fused Ultra Necrozma-GX in 2018, and then a full reset into the V mechanic in 2021. Seven notable prints in all, across five Japanese sets and five years.

This guide walks through every one of them: what set each came from, what the card actually does, and which prints have a matching sealed Japanese box in our current stock. We don’t hold single Necrozma cards ourselves right now, so this guide points you at the sealed product and sourcing route that actually gets you one. We ship Japanese sealed product out of Tokyo every week, and our Quick Order page is where specific-card sourcing requests get handled.

The lineup also traces Necrozma’s own in-game story. The base Necrozma-GX from Light Consuming Darkness came first, matching its role as the mysterious light-eating Pokemon introduced before Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. The Dusk Mane and Dawn Wings GX forms followed once those games gave Necrozma its fused formes with Solgaleo and Lunala, and Ultra Necrozma-GX capped the arc as the combined form, tied for the highest HP among the GX-era prints. Necrozma V arrived three years later as a standalone reprint under the newer V mechanic, with no fused forme attached.

Key Takeaway

Necrozma has appeared on seven notable Japanese card prints since 2017, spanning the original Necrozma-GX, the Dusk Mane and Dawn Wings GX forms from Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, the fused Ultra Necrozma-GX, a base Necrozma reprint, and a Necrozma V pair. We don’t currently hold single Necrozma cards in stock — the direct route is sealed product. The Rapid Strike Master Booster Box is currently listed at ¥47,250 and the Miracle Twin Booster Box is currently listed at ¥199,500. For the other prints, request a quote via our Quick Order page.

The Japanese Necrozma Cards and Where They’re From

Seven notable prints across five Japanese sets, in release order:

卡牌 Number Rarity Set Year
Necrozma-GX SM3N #26 Double Rare Light Consuming Darkness 2017
Dusk Mane Necrozma-GX SM5S #44 Double Rare Ultra Sun 2017
Dawn Wings Necrozma-GX SM5M #33 Double Rare Ultra Moon 2017
Ultra Necrozma-GX SM8b #104 Double Rare GX Ultra Shiny 2018
Necrozma SM11 #42 Rare Miracle Twin 2019
Necrozma V S5R #36 Double Rare Rapid Strike Master 2021
Necrozma V S5R #75 Secret Rare Rapid Strike Master 2021

Two eras stand out. The four GX-era prints — the base Necrozma-GX, the Dusk Mane and Dawn Wings forms, and the fused Ultra Necrozma-GX — all landed within about eighteen months of each other, tracking the Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon story beat for beat. Necrozma then went quiet for two years before returning as a standalone V in Rapid Strike Master, printed at both a standard Double Rare and a Secret Rare within the same set.

Check This First

The card name tells you which forme you’re holding — plain Necrozma, Dusk Mane, Dawn Wings, or Ultra Necrozma — and that maps directly to the Metal, Psychic, or Dragon typing printed in the corner. The GX or V marker after the name then tells you the mechanic era.

The 2017 Debut: Necrozma-GX in Light Consuming Darkness

Necrozma-GX Double Rare, SM3N #26, Light Consuming Darkness
Necrozma-GX Double Rare, SM3N #26, Light Consuming Darkness

Necrozma’s first Japanese card print verified in this guide comes from Light Consuming Darkness (SM3N), released June 16, 2017. Card #26 is a Basic Psychic-type Pokemon with 180 HP, illustrated by PLANETA. Its ability, Light’s End, blocks damage from attacks used by the opponent’s Colorless Pokemon, and its GX attack is Black Ray GX. This is the plain, pre-fusion Necrozma — no Dusk Mane, no Dawn Wings, no Ultra prefix — and it predates both of those forms by about six months.

The same card was later printed across several English sets, including Sun & Moon promos and Burning Shadows, but the Japanese original here is the debut print. For more on how the wider Sun & Moon era rarity system fits together, see our Sun & Moon-era Japanese Pokemon guide.

Dusk Mane and Dawn Wings: Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon

Dusk Mane Necrozma-GX Double Rare, SM5S #44, Ultra Sun

Dusk Mane Necrozma-GX Double Rare, SM5S #44, Ultra Sun

Dawn Wings Necrozma-GX Double Rare, SM5M #33, Ultra Moon

Dawn Wings Necrozma-GX Double Rare, SM5M #33, Ultra Moon

Ultra Sun (SM5S) and Ultra Moon (SM5M) both released December 8, 2017, and each carried one of Necrozma’s fused formes as a GX. Dusk Mane Necrozma-GX (SM5S #44) is a 190 HP Metal-type, illustrated by 5ban Graphics, reflecting its in-game fusion with Solgaleo. Dawn Wings Necrozma-GX (SM5M #33) is a 180 HP Psychic-type from the same illustrator, reflecting its fusion with Lunala. Both cards were printed as Double Rares in their respective sets, matching the twin-set structure Japan used for Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon.

Solgaleo and Lunala headline the same games these two Necrozma formes come from, and both legendaries have their own Japanese print history — see our Solgaleo & Lunala cards guide for the full breakdown.

The Fusion Chase Card: Ultra Necrozma-GX

Ultra Necrozma-GX Double Rare, SM8b #104, GX Ultra Shiny
Ultra Necrozma-GX Double Rare, SM8b #104, GX Ultra Shiny

GX Ultra Shiny (SM8b), released November 2, 2018, reprinted the fused form of Dusk Mane and Dawn Wings into a single card: Ultra Necrozma-GX, card #104 — the fused Ultra Necrozma-GX itself had debuted several months earlier in Forbidden Light (SM6). It’s a 190 HP Dragon-type Basic Pokemon, illustrated by PLANETA Otani, tied with Dusk Mane Necrozma-GX for the highest HP of the GX-era prints in this guide. Its Photon Geyser attack scales damage with discarded Psychic energy, and its GX attack, Sky-Scorching Light GX, places six damage counters on every one of the opponent’s Pokemon when the combined total of both players’ remaining Prize cards is 6 or fewer — a finishing move built for the closing turns of a game.

GX Ultra Shiny also reprinted the standalone Dusk Mane and Dawn Wings Necrozma-GX cards (Dusk Mane #86, Dawn Wings #49) alongside their non-GX Basic forms (Dusk Mane #85, Dawn Wings #48), making this set carry five Necrozma cards in one box — one of the densest Necrozma sets of the GX era. None of the four are covered in a separate section here since they repeat the Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon cards above in mechanics, but collectors chasing a complete Necrozma run should know this set carries all of them in one box.

Miracle Twin: The Base Necrozma Reprint

Necrozma Rare, SM11 #42, Miracle Twin
Necrozma Rare, SM11 #42, Miracle Twin

Miracle Twin (SM11), released May 31, 2019, brought Necrozma back as a plain Rare rather than a GX. Card #42 is a 130 HP Psychic-type illustrated by Masakazu Fukuda, with two attacks: Barrier Attack for 30 damage plus a damage-reduction effect, and Special Laser, which deals 100 or more damage with a bonus if a Special Energy card is attached. It’s the lowest-HP Necrozma print in this guide and the only one from the GX era printed without a GX attack — a straightforward, mid-set single rather than a chase card.

Rapid Strike Master (S5R), released January 22, 2021, is where Necrozma picked up the V mechanic — without a matching VMAX or fused forme this time. Card #36 (Double Rare) and card #75 (Secret Rare) share the same stat line: 220 HP, Psychic-type, illustrated by PLANETA Tsuji, with Prism Ray hitting the two opposing Benched Pokemon for 20 damage each and Special Laser dealing 100 or more with an energy-based bonus. At 220 HP, this is the highest-HP Necrozma print in the guide. For more on how V-era rarity tiers stack up, see our Sword & Shield-era Japanese Pokemon guide.

Sourcing Necrozma Through Sealed Japanese Boxes

None of the seven Necrozma prints above are currently in our single-card stock. What we do carry is sealed product from two of the five sets Necrozma appears in, and that’s the direct route to pulling one yourself.
