All three carry the “Ethan’s ___” naming convention (Japanese: ヒビキの___), a nod to the male rival character from Pokémon HeartGold/SoulSilver — internationally localised as Ethan, and named Hibiki in Japan. They first appeared in Hot Wind Arena (JP: 強化拡張パック 熱風のアリーナ, set code SV9a), released 14 March 2025, and were carried into the English Destined Rivals expansion (182 cards, released 30 May 2025) as the international counterpart set. This guide profiles each card, the printing we stock, and how the three are meant to be played together.

Their attacks and abilities reference each other by name in the card text — Typhlosion’s damage scales with discarded Ethan’s Adventure copies, and Ho-Oh ex’s ability feeds Energy specifically to other “Ethan’s”-named Pokémon on the bench.

What Is the “Ethan’s” Card Family?
“Ethan’s ___” is a named sub-theme built around a single Trainer character, in the same structural style as other character-named card families in the Pokémon TCG. All three confirmed cards — Ho-Oh ex, Adventure, and Typhlosion — were first printed in Hot Wind Arena (SV9a), a Japanese-only subset released 14 March 2025, then carried across to the English-language market inside Destined Rivals on 30 May 2025.
This guide covers exactly the three cards confirmed above. We are not claiming this is an exhaustive list of every “Ethan’s”-named card ever printed — only these three are verified and in scope here.

Ethan’s Ho-Oh ex: The Hot Wind Arena SAR
Ethan’s Ho-Oh ex (JP: ヒビキのホウオウex) is a Fire-type Pokémon ex with 230 HP. Its ability, “Golden Flame,” lets you attach up to 2 Basic Fire Energy from your hand to a Benched “Ethan’s” Pokémon once per turn. Its attack, “Shining Feathers” (4 Fire Energy), deals 160 damage and heals 50 damage from each of your own Pokémon. As a Pokémon ex, it gives up 2 Prize cards on knockout. It’s weak to Water ×2 and has a retreat cost of 2.
The base regular print sits at Hot Wind Arena 020/063. Our stock is the 086/063 Special Art Rare (SAR), illustrated specifically by Atsushi Furusawa. The English counterpart is Ethan’s Ho-Oh ex, Destined Rivals 039/182 (Double Rare), illustrated by aky CG Works.
A separate Ultra Rare print also exists at Hot Wind Arena 090/063 (업데이트: 현재 품절 — Quick Order로 재입고 요청) — it is the same character on a different print, not the same card as the 086/063 SAR. The 090/063 UR is not currently listed on our site. If you’re comparing listings, check the card number in the corner before assuming they’re interchangeable.

Ethan’s Adventure: The Supporter Search Engine
Ethan’s Adventure is the Supporter card that ties the deck together. Its effect: “Search your deck for up to 3 in any combination of Ethan’s Pokémon and Basic Fire Energy cards, reveal them, and put them into your hand. Then shuffle your deck.” That single card can fetch either half of the Ho-Oh ex + Typhlosion attackers, or the Fire Energy needed to fuel them — whichever the hand is short on.
The base regular print is Hot Wind Arena 063/063 (U rarity). Our stock is the 089/063 SAR, illustrated by Kariya. The English counterpart is Destined Rivals 165/182 (regular illustrator Iori Suzuki), with a SAR print at Destined Rivals 221/182.

Ethan’s Typhlosion: The AR Attacker
Ethan’s Typhlosion (JP: ヒビキのバクフーン) is a Fire-type Stage 2 with 170 HP. It carries two attacks: “Buddy Blast” (1 Fire Energy) deals 40+ damage, plus 60 more for every Ethan’s Adventure card sitting in your discard pile; “Steam Artillery” (2 Fire + 1 Colorless) deals a flat 160 damage. Buddy Blast is the card that rewards playing Ethan’s Adventure early and often — each copy you’ve already used pushes Typhlosion’s cheap first attack further past the flat-damage option.
The base regular print is Hot Wind Arena 017/063 (R rarity, illustrated by danciao). Our stock is the 070/063 Art Rare (AR), illustrated by GIDORA. The English counterpart is Destined Rivals 034/182.

How the Three Cards Work as One Deck Theme
This isn’t a coincidental character-name pattern — the card text of all three is explicitly written to interact. Ho-Oh ex’s “Golden Flame” ability moves Fire Energy specifically onto other Benched Pokémon named “Ethan’s,” which in practice means it’s built to fuel Typhlosion. Typhlosion’s “Buddy Blast” then scales directly off how many Ethan’s Adventure Supporters have already gone to the discard pile, which is the natural byproduct of using Adventure to search for the pieces in the first place. Playing all three as a set gets more out of each card than playing any of them in isolation.
