Chikorita, Cyndaquil & Totodile: Pokemon Johto Starter Cards Guide

Chikorita, Cyndaquil & Totodile: Pokemon Johto Starter Cards Guide

Chikorita, Cyndaquil, and Totodile debuted in 1999, but almost none of their notable Japanese card prints are anywhere near that old. The seven prints we’ve been able to verify for this guide span 2016 through 2025, and one of them — a Hisuian-region VSTAR built around a typing that didn’t exist in the original games — barely resembles the starter it’s based on.

This guide catalogs the current, verifiable Chikorita, Cyndaquil, and Totodile-line prints in the Japanese TCG: what set each one comes from, what it does on the field, and how artwork and rarity differ across printings. None of these singles are part of our current listed inventory, but five of the seven come packed inside Japanese booster boxes we do currently carry — so if you’re chasing a specific Johto starter print, sealed product from the matching set is the most direct route in while you check singles availability. We ship Japanese sealed product and singles out of Tokyo every week.

Key Takeaway

These Johto starter singles aren’t part of our current listed inventory — check availability via our Quick Order page. If you want a direct shot at pulling one, M1S Mega Symphonia (which contains Meganium) is currently listed from ¥8,960 to ¥10,400 (~$55–$64), and S9A Battle Region (which contains Hisuian Typhlosion VSTAR) is currently listed at ¥12,915 (~$79).

All Johto Starter Cards at a Glance

Seven verifiable prints across the three lines, from a 2016 concept-pack Common through 2025’s mega-era release:

카드 Number Rarity Set Year
Chikorita CP3 001/032 C Pokekyun Collection 2016
Cyndaquil S10D 009/067 C Time Gazer 2022
Totodile SM6b 015/066 C Champion’s Road 2018
Typhlosion SM8 019/095 R Super Burst Impact 2018
Hisuian Typhlosion VSTAR S9a 029/067 RRR Battle Region 2022
Feraligatr SV5K 015/071 R Wild Force 2024
Meganium M1S 005/090 R Mega Symphonia 2025

Unlike some regional starter lines, none of the Johto trio has picked up a Character Rare, secret-rare full art, or alternate-art chase print in our sourcing — every card documented here is a mainline set print at Common through RRR. The fire line is the deepest of the three, with a base Common, a Stage 2 evolution, and a Hisuian-region VSTAR spanning three separate sets. The sections below cover each line in order.

Chikorita to Meganium: The Grass Starter Line

Chikorita C, CP3 001/032, Pokekyun Collection
Chikorita, CP3 001/032, C — Pokekyun Collection

Chikorita (CP3 001/032) is the grass line’s only entry documented here, from January 2016’s Pokekyun Collection concept pack — the same Valentine’s-themed release that also carries the Kalos-region Floette at card number 022/032, covered in our Kalos starters cards guide. It’s a Grass Basic at 60 HP, illustrated by Sanosuke Sakuma, and it corresponds to the English-language Generations set’s RC1 print.

The line’s most recent print is Meganium (M1S 005/090), a Stage 2 evolution from August 2025’s Mega Symphonia — a Japan-only release with no confirmed English-language counterpart yet. At 160 HP, Meganium carries an ability along the lines of Overgrowth, which counts each basic Grass Energy attached to your Pokemon as two Energy instead of one, and an attack called Solar Beam that costs four Energy (two of them Grass) for 140 damage. It’s illustrated by Yoriyuki Ikegami.

Meganium R, M1S 005/090, Mega Symphonia

Meganium, M1S 005/090, R

Nine years separate Chikorita’s only documented Japanese print from Meganium’s — the widest gap of the three lines — with nothing in between that we’ve been able to verify.

Cyndaquil to Typhlosion: The Fire Starter Line

Cyndaquil C, S10D 009/067, Time Gazer
Cyndaquil, S10D 009/067, C — Time Gazer

Cyndaquil (S10D 009/067) comes from April 2022’s Time Gazer expansion pack, illustrated by sui, and corresponds to card #23 in the English-language Astral Radiance set. It’s a Fire Basic at 60 HP carrying two attack options: one that lets you search your deck for two basic Energy cards, and a small 10-damage attack.

The fire line is the only one of the three with a mid-evolution print in our sourcing. Typhlosion (SM8 019/095), a Stage 2 from September 2018’s Super Burst Impact (the Japanese counterpart to English’s Lost Thunder), illustrated by Kouki Saitou, sits at 160 HP with an ability along the lines of Burning Energy — it turns every Energy card attached to your Pokemon into Fire type until the end of the turn — and an attack called Lost Flame that costs four Fire Energy for 120 damage plus sends two Energy cards from the opponent’s Active Pokemon to the Lost Zone.

Typhlosion R, SM8 019/095, Super Burst Impact

Typhlosion, SM8 019/095, R

Hisuian Typhlosion VSTAR RRR, S9a 029/067, Battle Region

Hisuian Typhlosion VSTAR, S9a 029/067, RRR

The fire line’s most notable print is Hisuian Typhlosion VSTAR (S9a 029/067), from February 2022’s Battle Region, corresponding to English’s Astral Radiance. Illustrated by 5ban Graphics, it swaps Typhlosion’s usual Fire typing for Psychic at 260 HP, reflecting its regional-form origin. Its attack, built around a PPC-cost combination, deals 180 damage and places three damage counters on a Bench, while its VSTAR Power — a one-per-game effect the set calls something along the lines of Haze Star — knocks out the opponent’s Active Pokemon outright if it already carries exactly four damage counters. A non-VSTAR Hisuian Typhlosion V exists in the same set at card number 028, and there are two additional secret-rare slots on record at #076 and #085, though we haven’t independently confirmed which exact rarity each of those carries.

One correction worth making directly: no card named “Typhlosion V” on its own exists as a plain, non-Hisuian print in the Japanese database we checked. If you’ve seen that name used to describe a Johto starter card, it almost certainly refers to the Hisuian Typhlosion V or VSTAR pair from Battle Region above.

Totodile to Feraligatr: The Water Starter Line

Totodile C, SM6b 015/066, Champion's Road
Totodile, SM6b 015/066, C — Champion’s Road

Totodile (SM6b 015/066) is from May 2018’s Champion’s Road enhanced expansion pack, the Japanese release behind English’s Dragon Majesty. Illustrated by Hironobu Yoshida, it’s a Water Basic at 60 HP with two attacks: Glare, which paralyzes the Defending Pokemon on a coin-flip heads, and a multi-hit scratching attack.

The line’s evolved form, Feraligatr (SV5K 015/071), comes from January 2024’s Wild Force, corresponding to card #41 in English’s Temporal Forces. Illustrated by GOSSAN, this Stage 2 Water type sits at 180 HP with an ability called Torrent Heart — put five damage counters on itself, and its attack that turn hits for an extra 120 damage — paired with Giant Wave, a 160-damage attack that comes with a drawback: Feraligatr can’t attack on its next turn.

Feraligatr R, SV5K 015/071, Wild Force

Feraligatr, SV5K 015/071, R

Unlike the fire line, the water line’s Japanese print history in our sourcing runs straight from a 2018 Basic to a 2024 Stage 2 with nothing documented in between.

Sourcing Johto Starter Singles

These seven prints aren’t currently listed as in-stock singles on our site. If you’re after a specific Chikorita, Cyndaquil, or Totodile-line card — whether that’s the Pokekyun Collection Chikorita, the Wild Force Feraligatr, or the Hisuian Typhlosion VSTAR — check current availability via 빠른 주문. Note the specific card number and set name from the table above, since Typhlosion in particular has two very different Japanese prints (a Stage 2 Super Burst Impact card and a Hisuian-region VSTAR) that share a name but nothing else.

Typhlosion’s Super Burst Impact print (SM8 019/095) is worth flagging specifically: the sealed booster box for that set is out of stock in our current catalog, so this single is a Quick Order sourcing request rather than a box-pull we can point you to directly.

Current Sealed Boxes That Contain a Johto Starter

Five of the seven prints above ship inside Japanese booster boxes currently listed in our catalog — so if you want a real shot at pulling one rather than sourcing a single, sealed product from the matching set is the direct route in.

S10D Time Gazer Cyndaquil ¥15,225 (~$93)
SM6B Champion’s Road Totodile ¥105,000 (~$644)

Champion’s Road sits well above the other four in price — it’s an older enhanced expansion pack, and it’s priced well above the current-set boxes here. If you’re building toward the full Johto trio across sealed product on a budget, Battle Region and Mega Symphonia are the more accessible entry points.

For sealed product with a real chance at pulling one, see the M1S Mega Symphonia, S9A Battle Region, SV5K Wild Force, S10D Time Gazer, and SM6B Champion’s Road boxes above.

For other regional starter lines from the same research pass, see our Sinnoh starters cards guide, our Hoenn starters cards guide, and our Kalos starters cards guide. 자주 묻는 질문

Do any current Japanese booster boxes contain a Chikorita, Cyndaquil, or Totodile-line card?

Yes. Five of the seven Johto starter prints documented here come from currently sourceable Japanese sets: M1S Mega Symphonia contains Meganium, S9A Battle Region contains Hisuian Typhlosion VSTAR, SV5K Wild Force contains Feraligatr, S10D Time Gazer contains Cyndaquil, and SM6B Champion’s Road contains Totodile.

Is there a Character Rare (CHR) print of a Johto starter?

Not that we’ve been able to verify. Every Johto starter print documented in this guide is a mainline set card at Common through RRR — none of them use the Character Rare illustration format.

Is there a card called “Typhlosion V”?

Not on its own. The only V-tier Typhlosion print we’ve verified is Hisuian Typhlosion V and its VSTAR counterpart, both from 2022’s Battle Region — a Psychic-type regional form rather than a plain Fire-type V.

How can I get a Chikorita, Cyndaquil, or Totodile-line single since none are in stock?

Check current availability through our Quick Order page with the specific card number and set from this guide. We ship Japanese sealed product and singles worldwide from Tokyo with tracked delivery.

What’s the most recent Johto starter card print?

Meganium (M1S 005/090) from August 2025’s Mega Symphonia is the newest print documented here.
