Grimmsnarl has quietly picked up four confirmed Japanese prints since its Galar debut — and the newest one, a Special Art Rare tied to Marnie, is the most recent addition to the line.
オーロンゲ (Grimmsnarl) is a Darkness-type Stage 2 that evolves from Morgrem (ギモー), and it entered the Japanese Pokemon TCG in Sword & Shield’s Galar era. Across the sets we’ve verified, it has shown up as a plain base print three times and once as a full Special Art Rare paired with Marnie — the same trainer whose Morpeko appears in a companion starter box. This guide walks through every confirmed printing, explains how the Marnie’s Grimmsnarl ex SAR relates (and doesn’t relate) to that starter box, and prices the one Grimmsnarl card we carry in graded stock.
Four Japanese Grimmsnarl printings are confirmed to date: two early base Rares (VMAX Rising, Eevee Heroes), one modern Uncommon (Stellar Miracle), and one 2025 Special Art Rare — Marnie’s Grimmsnarl ex (M2a 243/193) (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order) from Mega Dream ex, currently listed at ¥8,492 (~$53.41) in PSA 10 (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order). It is a different physical card from the Grimmsnarl that ships inside the separate SVOM starter box.
Prices are converted at ¥159/USD (September 2026). Only the store’s own graded listing carries a verified price in this guide — the base-print rows below are identification references, not market valuations.
Every Grimmsnarl Card We’ve Verified
Four Japanese Grimmsnarl printings have been confirmed for this guide, listed by release date:
| 카드 | 세트 | Rarity | HP | Released |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Grimmsnarl 052/070 | VMAX Rising (S1a) | Rare | 170 | 7 Feb 2020 |
| Grimmsnarl 054/069 | Eevee Heroes (S6a) | Rare | 170 | 28 May 2021 |
| Grimmsnarl 066/102 | Stellar Miracle (SV7) | Uncommon | 170 | 19 Jul 2024 |
| Marnie’s Grimmsnarl ex 243/193 | Mega Dream ex (M2a) | SAR | 320 | 28 Nov 2025 |
Notice the gap: three plain base prints hold at 170 HP across five years, and then the Marnie-flavoured 2025 ex nearly doubles that to 320 HP as a full-art Special Art Rare. That jump reflects the character-card, ex-suffix treatment rather than a change to Grimmsnarl’s own Stage 2 evolution line.
Other Grimmsnarl prints may exist in sets we haven’t cross-checked this pass; treat the four above as the confirmed baseline rather than a complete catalogue.
Galar Origins: VMAX Rising and Eevee Heroes
Grimmsnarl’s first two Japanese prints both landed in its home region’s early sets, a year and a half apart.
The VMAX Rising 052/070 print released 7 February 2020 — VMAX Rising is the Japanese equivalent of the international Rebel Clash set, and this is the earliest confirmed Grimmsnarl card in our research. Illustrated by nagimiso, it’s a straightforward 170 HP Rare with no character-card tie-in.
Just over a year later, Eevee Heroes 054/069 (28 May 2021) reprinted Grimmsnarl at the same 170 HP and Rare rarity, this time illustrated by kawayoo. Eevee Heroes is best known for its Eevee-family chase cards, but Grimmsnarl rode along as a supporting Darkness-type Rare in the same set.
Both prints use the standard non-full-art Rare frame, so the fastest way to tell them apart is the card number in the bottom corner — 052/070 versus 054/069 — and the illustrator credit if the number is worn or obscured.
The Marnie Pairing: Two Different Grimmsnarl Products
Grimmsnarl’s highest-profile Japanese appearance ties it to Marnie, the Galar-region trainer, and this is where two separate products get confused for one another.
There is a two-Pokemon starter box called “Marnie’s Morpeko & Grimmsnarl ex” (set code SVOM), released 21 Feb 2025, which bundles a Marnie’s Morpeko Art Rare with a Grimmsnarl ex card of its own. Our Morpeko guide covers that box’s Morpeko card in detail — but this pack could not verify the exact card number for the SVOM box’s own Grimmsnarl ex, so we’re not stating it here.
Separately, and later, Marnie’s Grimmsnarl ex (M2a 243/193) released as a Special Art Rare inside Mega Dream ex on 28 November 2025 — a different set, a different card number, and a different physical product from the SVOM starter box. The two share a name and a trainer but are not interchangeable when buying or selling. If you’re trying to match a specific card against a listing, always check the set code first: SVOM is the starter box, M2a is Mega Dream ex.
Set code decides everything here. A card printed “SVOM” is from the starter box; a card printed “M2a” is the Mega Dream ex Special Art Rare covered in the next section. Don’t assume they’re the same card just because both are called “Marnie’s Grimmsnarl.”
The Chase Card: Marnie’s Grimmsnarl ex Special Art Rare

Marnie’s Grimmsnarl ex (M2a 243/193) is a 320 HP Darkness-type Special Art Rare illustrated by Ligton, released as part of Mega Dream ex on 28 November 2025. It evolves from “Marnie’s Morpeko” within the same theme, and its ability, Punk Up, attaches up to five basic Darkness Energy from the deck when it evolves — a strong ramp effect that matches the aggressive Darkness decks Grimmsnarl has always supported.
We don’t have verified pull-rate data for this specific card in this research pass; our Mega Dream ex pull-rates guide covers what’s known about the set’s SAR odds if you want that context before opening product.
This is also the store’s own graded stock: a PSA 10 copy of Marnie’s Grimmsnarl ex is currently listed at ¥8,492 (~$53.41) (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order) at the ¥159/USD rate used throughout this guide. For the full set breakdown, our Mega Dream ex complete guide and M2a card list put this card in context against the rest of the set.
The Modern Base Print: Stellar Miracle

Between the Galar-era Rares and the 2025 SAR sits Grimmsnarl 066/102 from Stellar Miracle (SV7), released 19 July 2024. Stellar Miracle is the Japanese equivalent of the international Stellar Crown set. Illustrated by Kazumasa Yasukuni, this print drops Grimmsnarl to Uncommon rarity while keeping the same 170 HP seen in both earlier base prints.
It’s the most recent plain (non-character) Grimmsnarl print we’ve verified, and the easiest of the four to find in bulk commons boxes from Stellar Miracle product, since Uncommons are printed at higher rates than Rares.
How to Identify Your Grimmsnarl Card
With four confirmed prints spanning two rarity tiers, identification comes down to three checks:
- Set code first. Look for S1a, S6a, SV7, or M2a printed near the card number. This alone separates the 2025 SAR from all three base prints.
- Card number and HP. The three base prints (052/070, 054/069, 066/102) all sit at 170 HP; the M2a Special Art Rare jumps to 320 HP and carries the “ex” suffix plus “Marnie’s” in its name.
- Frame style. The base prints use the standard Rare/Uncommon card frame with a small illustration window. The M2a SAR uses the full-bleed alternate-art treatment typical of Special Art Rares — artwork runs to the card edges with no white border.
If you’re new to Japanese rarity terminology, our alt-art SAR guide and rarity guide for graded buyers both explain what separates a Rare from a Special Art Rare in more general terms.
