Pokémon TCG Starter Deck: Which to Buy First (Japanese Options)

Pokémon TCG Starter Deck: Which to Buy First (Japanese Options)

Choosing a Pokemon TCG starter deck is easier once you know that most Japanese starter products are one 60-card deck, and that a game needs two. A first-time buyer in Japan sees three kinds of box: the fixed-deck スターターセットex line, the single random deck of the MEGA スタートデッキ100 バトルコレクション, and the multi-deck バトルアカデミー box. This guide turns the official pokemon-card.com descriptions into a decision, so that you can pick what to buy first without guessing at what is inside.

It is a decision guide, not a ranking, and it makes no claim about which deck is stronger. The official pages do not say, and a first purchase rarely turns on that. What turns on it is the number of decks you need, whether you want to know the contents in advance, and whether a coin and playmat come in the box.

We sell Japanese sealed product and graded singles from Tokyo. Our prices are shown as “currently listed at” with the product page linked; official manufacturer prices are labelled “official price” and are not ours. USD figures convert at ¥154/USD and are approximate.

Key Takeaways
  • Plan for two decks: the official pages for the MEGA スターターセットex and the MEGA スタートデッキ100 both say a match needs two or more decks.
  • Fixed means known: the three MEGA スターターセットex decks are fixed, for example the Sprigatito & Meowscarada ex deck; the Start Deck 100 line is random.
  • Boxes differ in accessories: a MEGA スターターセットex box lists a coin and playmat; the MEGA スタートデッキ100 lists a damage-counter sheet only.
  • The rules stay the same: 60 cards, at most four cards of the same name, and six Prize cards, per the official how-to-play page.

What the Official Beginner Pages Say

The official beginner page on pokemon-card.com splits the choice in two. Expansion packs are for people who “want to get cards for now”, and contain a few cards at random. Ready-built decks are for people who want to experience battling as quickly as possible, and contain a deck of 60 cards. The page names the current expansion pack and the スペシャルデッキセットMEGA as the deck-side example. So if your goal is a first game, the official advice points at a deck.

Other official pages add specifics. The ステラ starter page describes a prebuilt deck that you can play as it comes, with many commonly used Trainers cards, and recommends it to people new to the game. The バトルアカデミー page says it is for people who have never played, and that a friend or family can play at once with a single box. The Battle Academy “anywhere” edition is described as the essence of the full box in a lighter form. None of these claims are ours; they are quoted from the pages.

One caution on terms: the Japanese バトルアカデミー (Friday, March 8, 2024, four decks) and the English-language Battle Academy released through pokemon.com (2020, 2022 and Friday, June 21, 2024, three decks) share a name but are different products. If you are shopping from Japan, the one that matters is the four-deck Japanese box, which is covered in the section on the four-deck box below.

If you have never played, our beginner guide to playing Pokémon cards walks through a turn before you buy anything.

The Deck Rules Every Starter Deck Follows

Starter decks are built to follow the official deck rules, so the rules are also the checklist for judging a deck. The table gives the rules from the official how-to-play page, rendered in English.

Rule What the official page says (rendering)
Deck size Each player uses one deck of 60 cards
Copies Up to four cards with the same name; ピカチュウ and ピカチュウex count as different names
Basic Energy Any number of Basic Energy cards may be in the deck
Basic Pokémon At least one Basic Pokémon is required; an Evolution Pokémon needs its earlier Basic Pokémon
Prize cards Six Prize cards; the first player to take six wins
Opening hand and Bench Draw seven cards; the Bench holds up to five Pokémon
Starting ratio Try 15 Energy cards and about 30 Trainers cards; the figure shows Pokémon 15, Trainers 30, Energy 15

The 15 / 30 / 15 split is the official starting suggestion, not a requirement. Starter products do not all follow it: the 2025 スターターセットMEGA decks list 18 Pokémon, 27 Trainers and 15 Energy for the Gengar deck and 16, 29 and 15 for the Diancie deck. What every product has in common is the total of 60.

The same page names three ways to win: take all six Prize cards, leave your opponent with no Pokémon in play, or leave your opponent unable to draw a card at the start of their turn. For a first game with a starter deck, those three conditions are all there is to remember.

Why the First Purchase Is Two Decks

The official pages for the MEGA スタートデッキ100 バトルコレクション and the MEGA スターターセットex both carry the same sentence: a match needs two or more decks. A single starter deck is one side of the table. This is the most useful fact for a first-time buyer, because it changes the question from “which deck” to “which pair”.

Three pairings are straightforward:

Pairing Coin and playmat from the products What you know in advance
Two different MEGA スターターセットex decks Each box lists a coin and a playmat Both decks are fixed, so both lists are known
One MEGA スターターセットex and one MEGA スタートデッキ100 Coin and playmat from the starter set box only One known deck, one of 100 for the other
Two MEGA スタートデッキ100 No coin or playmat listed on its page Neither deck is known; each has at least two Pokémon ex

An official event page linked from the MEGA スターターセットex page names the ポケモンカードゲーム教室 (Pokémon Card Game classes) and デッキそのままバトル (battle with the deck as it comes), which are events built around playing a starter deck as sold. We have not verified dates or locations and do not state them here.

Fixed or Random for a First Deck

The choice between fixed and random is the real branch in the decision. A fixed deck, like the MEGA スターターセットex decks, has the same contents in every box. You can read the official list before buying, and a second player with a different deck is a known quantity. A random deck, like the Start Deck 100 line, is one of 100, and the official wording is that you do not know which one: 「100種類の中からどれか1つがキミの手に!」.

The random line has a guarantee that is stated officially: every MEGA スタートデッキ100 deck includes two or more Pokémon ex. It does not state anything else about the contents of an individual deck, and we do not infer more. Two official notices from December 2025 concern the line: a statement that additional production is planned according to sales, and a correction of a packing error in decks No.004 and No.101, with exchange handled through a support form.

If you value knowing the contents, take fixed. If you value the unknown, take random. Neither choice is wrong, and we do not rank them; our Start Deck 100 Battle Collection guide covers the random line in depth.

The Three Fixed Decks to Choose From

The MEGA スターターセットex line was released on Friday, July 31, 2026 at an official price of ¥1,800 per deck. The three decks, as named on the official page, are listed below with our listing for each. The listings pair with the decks by Pokémon name. The Sprigatito listing is the Meowscarada ex pairing, not the 2023 スターターセットex ニャオハ&ルカリオex.

Deck Type Line named on the page Our listing
イーブイex 雷 (Lightning) イーブイex, パーモット, イーブイ (full art) Starter Set ex Eevee ex: no listed price on October 29, 2026

All three include デリバード and some reprinted cards, per the page. The box holds a 60-card deck, a paper sheet of damage counters and markers, a coin, a playmat, a player’s guide and a rules sheet. Because the decks are fixed and each has its own type, choosing among them is about which Pokémon you want to play, not about a hidden difference in contents.

The Four-Deck Box and the Pack Route

The Japanese バトルアカデミー box was released on Friday, March 8, 2024 at an official price of ¥3,290. It contains four 60-card decks (ピカチュウex, ニャオハex, ゲッコウガex and ルカリオex), a coin, a playmat, damage-counter sheets, two starter guides and a step-up guide. Four decks in one purchase is more than any other starter line named in this guide. A lighter いつでもどこでも version has two decks and two half playmats at an official price of ¥1,360. These are official reference products here; they are not among the products whose prices we quote in this guide.

The other route is the pack route. The official beginner page frames expansion packs as the route for collectors who want cards without a prebuilt deck. A starter deck and a pack are not interchangeable: a pack gives you a few random cards, and a deck gives you 60 cards that already work as a deck. Our guide to the best Japanese Pokémon sets for beginners covers the pack side, and the MEGA Premium Trainer Box vs Start Deck 100 guide compares a deck-oriented box with the Start Deck 100 format.

After the First Deck

A starter deck is playable as it comes, and the official how-to-play page also links a recipe hub of decks, including decks that are easy to build for first-timers. The official page for the 2023 スターターセットex noted that its promo-pack card could be swapped in to modify the 60-card deck. That is a statement about the 2023 products, and we do not extend it to the 2026 line.

If you intend to play in organised events, check the legal card pool. The official Standard regulation as of October 29, 2026 is the cards marked H, I or J at the lower left, in effect from Friday, January 23, 2026 (official regulation page). The official card database shows the regulation mark only as a set-logo image, so we do not state the mark for each card in a starter deck; look at the card itself. No further change to the Standard marks has been announced on pokemon-card.com as of October 29, 2026. Our sibling guide on how to build a Pokémon deck with Japanese cards goes through the rules in more detail.

On October 29, 2026 fan sites reported a Japanese trademark filing for 「バトルスタートデッキ」 (working English translation: Battle Start Deck; no official English name exists), which collectors read as a possible beginner deck product; nothing is announced. Our Battle Start Deck trademark guide explains what is confirmed and what is not.

자주 묻는 질문

Which Japanese Pokémon starter deck should I buy first?

It depends on what you want to know in advance. If you want a known deck list plus a coin and playmat, take a MEGA スターターセットex deck, such as the Sprigatito & Meowscarada ex set. If you want the lowest entry price and a surprise, take the MEGA Start Deck 100 Battle Collection. Either way, plan for two decks, because the official pages say a match needs two or more.

Do I need to buy two starter decks?

A game needs two 60-card decks between the two players, so one deck per player; a single buyer who already has an opponent with a deck needs only one.

Should my first deck be fixed or random?

The MEGA スターターセットex decks are fixed, so you know the contents before buying. The MEGA スタートデッキ100 is random: one of 100 decks, each with at least two Pokémon ex. Which suits you depends on whether you prefer a known list or a surprise.

How many cards are in a deck and how many copies are allowed?

A deck is 60 cards, with at most four cards of the same name, though any number of Basic Energy cards may be included, according to the official how-to-play page. The game ends when one player takes six Prize cards.

How much do your Japanese starter decks cost?

We currently list the MEGA Start Deck 100 Battle Collection at ¥1,097 (~$7), the Zorua & Zoroark ex set at ¥1,584 (~$10) and the Sprigatito & Meowscarada ex set at ¥1,796 (~$12). The official price of each MEGA スターターセットex deck is ¥1,800.

Is the Battle Start Deck a product I can buy?

Not as an announced product. 「バトルスタートデッキ」 is a Japanese trademark filing reported by fan sites on October 29, 2026, and nothing about its contents, price or release is announced.
