What “Strongest” Means for a Pokemon Card

A Pokemon card doesn’t have one single “strength” number. It has printed HP (how much damage it can take before being knocked out), tournament viability, and market value — and those three things move independently. A card can have huge printed HP and never see competitive play; a card can be worth very little and still carry one of the biggest HP totals ever printed.

This article uses only the first — printed HP — because it’s the only one you can check yourself by reading the card. Every figure below is cross-checked against Limitless TCG’s card database, which mirrors the Japanese card text directly. We’re not ranking by price, by tournament results, or by rarity tier; a card can be extremely rare and still have modest HP, and vice versa.

That distinction matters because the 2025–26 M-series (Mega Evolution) format is also reported to have introduced a new rarity tier alongside the HP jump: MA (Mega Attack Rare / メガアタックレア). On Limitless TCG’s own card pages, though, all four M2a examples selected here — including Mega Gardevoir ex and Mega Lucario ex — are catalogued as Secret Rare, not MA; this guide uses Limitless’s rarity labelling throughout. Four Mega Dream ex Examples (330–360 HP)

Four of the six selected entries come from Mega Dream ex (M2a). All four are Mega Pokemon ex cards and sit in the 330–360 HP band. Other M2a cards are outside the scope of this comparison.

Mega Gardevoir ex tops the list at 360 HP, a Psychic-type Mega Pokemon ex catalogued as Secret Rare on Limitless TCG. It’s the highest printed HP figure among the cards in this guide.

Mega Eelektross ex follows at 350 HP, a Lightning-type Special Art Rare. It’s the second-highest figure among the six entries in this comparison.

How Printed HP Has Climbed Across Eras

Looking at printed HP across the sets we track shows a clear upward trend on single-Pokemon cards, with one important exception for combined Tag Team totals:

The Latias & Latios GX figure needs a caveat: Tag Team GX cards state combined HP for two Pokemon sharing one card, so 250 HP there isn’t directly comparable to a single Pokemon’s printed HP the way the other rows are. Once you separate that out, the selected single-Pokemon examples range from 220–310 HP on the VMAX and V era cards cited here to 330–360 HP on the selected M-series Mega Pokemon ex cards. We haven’t verified every high-HP card ever printed in Japanese sets, so treat this as a comparison across the specific cards cited here, not a claim about the entire card pool.
