Gengar & Mimikyu GX Card Guide: The SM9 Tag Bolt Special Art 103/095

Gengar & Mimikyu GX Card Guide: The SM9 Tag Bolt Special Art 103/095

Four Japanese prints share the name Gengar & Mimikyu GX, and only one of them is the Special Art secret rare that collectors mean when they say “the good one.”

That card is Gengar & Mimikyu GX SR (Special Art), numbered 103/095, from Japan’s SM9 “Tag Bolt” expansion — released 7 December 2018. It sits above a regular Double Rare print and a separate Full Art SR, and just below a Rainbow Rare secret at the very top of the set. This guide walks through all four prints, the set they come from, what we know (and don’t) about an English equivalent, and where the Special Art 103/095 sits on the Japanese chase-rarity ladder.

We list PSA 10 Japanese cards out of Tokyo, including several other SM9 Tag Bolt tag-team GX prints. Our own 103/095 copy is currently out of stock, so this guide leads with what we do have listed today.

Key Takeaways

Several SM9 Tag Bolt listings are currently available in our catalogue, including PSA10 Pikachu & Zekrom GX SR [100/095], currently listed at ¥87,208 (~$548), and the SM9 Tag Bolt Japanese Booster Box, currently listed at ¥430,500 (~$2,708). Our PSA10 Gengar & Mimikyu GX SR (Special Art) 103/095 is not listed on our site at the moment; sourcing requests go through Quick Order. Gengar & Mimikyu GX 103/095, SR Special Art, SM9 Tag Bolt
Gengar & Mimikyu GX 103/095, SR (Special Art), SM9 Tag Bolt

The Japanese name is ゲンガー&ミミッキュGX. In English it’s Gengar & Mimikyu GX, a Tag Team GX card printed at 240 HP and typed Psychic. The 103/095 print carries the printed rarity SR, distinguished from the set’s other SR by its full “Special Art” treatment — illustrated by Midori Harada, a different illustrator from every other print of this card.

103/095 sits in the secret-rare number range of SM9 Tag Bolt: the set’s base numbering runs to 095, so any card numbered above that — 102, 103, 113 — is a secret print rather than part of the main set run.

The Set: SM9 Tag Bolt

SM9’s Japanese name is 摶張パック「タッグボルト「 — a main expansion pack (摶張パック) titled “Tag Bolt.” It released in Japan on 7 December 2018, part of the Sun & Moon-era SM-numbered run that also produced sets like SM3+ Shining Legends.

The set’s base numbering runs to 095 cards, with secret rares numbered above that base — 102/095, 103/095 and 113/095 all fall into that secret-rare range, alongside secrets for other Tag Team GX pairings printed in the same set (Latias & Latios GX at 105/095 and Pikachu & Zekrom GX at 100/095 among them).

Tag Bolt was one of several SM-era sets built around Tag Team GX cards — two-Pokemon cards with a shared attack pool and, in most cases, both a Full Art and a Special Art (or Rainbow) secret print. That’s exactly the pattern Gengar & Mimikyu GX follows: RR base print, SR Full Art, SR Special Art, HR Rainbow secret.

Japanese vs English Print

The English-language release built around the same wave of Tag Team GX cards as SM9 Tag Bolt is Team Up (TEU), and Limitless TCG confirms Gengar & Mimikyu-GX appears there at four numbers, mirroring the four Japanese rarity tiers: TEU #53 (Double Rare), TEU #164 (Ultra Rare), TEU #165 (Ultra Rare, alternate full art), and TEU #186 (Rainbow Rare). The English and Japanese card artwork has not been directly compared side by side here, so treat this as a confirmed rarity-tier correspondence, not a confirmed identical illustration — TEU #165 is the closest positional match to our anchor’s Special Art treatment.

No English-market price for these prints has been independently verified here, so we’re not quoting figures we can’t stand behind. Everything in our own catalogue covers the four confirmed 日语 Tag Bolt prints listed in the table above. If you’re comparing a Japanese Gengar & Mimikyu GX to an English tag-team GX card in hand, check the language on the card text box first — Japanese Tag Bolt cards read entirely in Japanese, including the attack and Pokemon Power text.

Where 103/095 Sits on the Rarity Ladder

Within this one card’s four prints, the printed rarity codes rank in a clear order: RR (038/095, the base print) sits below SR (both 102/095 Full Art and 103/095 Special Art), which in turn sits below HR (113/095, the Rainbow Rare secret at the top of the set’s numbering). The two SR prints share a rarity code but differ in art treatment and illustrator — 103/095’s Special Art by Midori Harada is a full-scene illustration, distinct from 102/095’s Full Art treatment by 5ban Graphics.

Our own listings for other SM9 Tag Bolt tag-team GX cards show how wide the spread can get even within the same rarity tier and the same set:

Latias & Latios GX 105/095, SR Special Art, SM9 Tag Bolt

¥1,321,516 (~$8,311)

Pikachu & Zekrom GX 100/095, SR, SM9 Tag Bolt

PSA10 Latias & Latios GX SR (Special Art), 105/095, is currently listed at ¥1,321,516 (~$8,311), while PSA10 Pikachu & Zekrom GX SR, 100/095, sits at ¥87,208 (~$548) — both are the same printed rarity code, from the same set, priced roughly fifteen times apart in our own catalogue. Character and pairing popularity, not the rarity code alone, decide that gap.

常见问题

What is Gengar & Mimikyu GX 103/095 SR?

It’s the Special Art secret-rare print of Gengar & Mimikyu GX from Japan’s SM9 Tag Bolt set, released 7 December 2018. It’s a 240 HP Psychic-type Tag Team GX card illustrated by Midori Harada, distinct from the set’s other SR (102/095 Full Art, illustrated by 5ban Graphics).

How many Japanese prints of Gengar & Mimikyu GX exist?

Four: 038/095 (RR, Mitsuhiro Arita), 102/095 (SR Full Art, 5ban Graphics), 103/095 (SR Special Art, Midori Harada), and 113/095 (HR Rainbow secret, 5ban Graphics). All four come from SM9 Tag Bolt; no later Japanese reprint of this pairing has been verified.

Is there an English print of Gengar & Mimikyu GX?

Yes. Team Up (TEU), the English set built around the same wave of Tag Team GX cards, includes Gengar & Mimikyu-GX at TEU #53 (Double Rare), #164 (Ultra Rare), #165 (Ultra Rare, alternate full art — the closest positional match to our anchor’s Special Art print), and #186 (Rainbow Rare), confirmed on Limitless TCG. No English-market price has been independently verified here.

Can I still buy the SM9 103/095 Special Art print from you?

This print is not listed on our site at the moment. Sourcing requests go through Quick Order. In the meantime, other SM9 Tag Bolt tag-team GX prints and a sealed Tag Bolt booster box are currently listed.

What’s the difference between 102/095 and 103/095?

Both are printed as SR, but they’re different art treatments by different illustrators — 102/095 is a Full Art by 5ban Graphics, and 103/095 is a Special Art by Midori Harada. They’re separate prints, not the same card under two numbers.
