The official card database credits Pikachu V, S8a 020/028, to the illustrator HYOGONOSUKE — the only S8a card the database credits to that name. This guide leads with the credit, then covers the card’s text, its place among S8a’s five Pikachu V-line cards, and how to buy into this set.
S8a, the 25th ANNIVERSARY COLLECTION expansion pack, released in Japan on Friday, October 22, 2021, at ¥297 (tax incl.) per pack.
Pikachu V is S8a 020/028, a Lightning-type Basic with 190 HP, illustrated by HYOGONOSUKE and carrying the self-damaging attack Volt Tackle. It sits alongside four other Pikachu V-line cards in S8a — Surfing Pikachu V and VMAX, Flying Pikachu V and VMAX — all four credited to aky CG Works instead. Our S8A 25th Anniversary Collection Booster Box is currently listed at ¥67,200 (~$436) (September 17, 2026).
HYOGONOSUKE: The Credit Behind This Card
Across the 25 numbered entries the official card database lists for S8a, HYOGONOSUKE is credited on exactly one: Pikachu V, 020/028. S8a-P, the companion Promo Card Pack 25th ANNIVERSARY edition released the same day, is absent from the official card database entirely and carries no illustrator data at all, so there is no credit there to compare against in either direction.
That’s a contrast with the rest of S8a’s Pikachu V-line cards, which all share a single illustrator: aky CG Works is credited on Surfing Pikachu V (021/028), Surfing Pikachu VMAX (022/028), Flying Pikachu V (023/028) and Flying Pikachu VMAX (024/028). HYOGONOSUKE’s Pikachu V stands apart from that block as the only Pikachu V-line card credited to a different artist — one card against four. The name reappears in the 2026 anniversary set too: 30th CELEBRATION (M6a) credits HYOGONOSUKE on Moltres 006/103, Articuno 012/103 and Zapdos 049/103.
What Is Pikachu V (S8a 020/028)?

Pikachu V is a Basic Pokémon, playable straight from the opening hand. Its detail page shows only S8a’s own expansion logo mark — no G, H or I regulation-mark letter is printed on any S8a card page — and the database’s evolution panel lists Pikachu VMAX above it and Pikachu V itself as the highlighted entry. That panel entry is the database’s own card-family listing; it is not a claim that a regular Pikachu VMAX is one of S8a’s own numbered cards. This S8a 020/028 Pikachu V is also a different card from S8a-G 001/015 Pikachu V, the Golden Box’s own Pikachu V — see our Pikachu V 001/015 (Golden Box) Card Guide for that separate card.
Card Text: Volt Tackle
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Card number | 020/028 |
| JP name | ピカチュウV |
| Illustrator | HYOGONOSUKE |
| Type | Lightning |
| HP | 190 |
| Stage | Basic |
| Weakness | Fighting (×2) |
| Resistance | — |
| Retreat | 1 |
Pikachu V’s one attack, Volt Tackle (ボルテッカー), costs two Lightning Energy and one Colorless Energy for 210 damage, and it also does 30 damage to Pikachu V itself. S8a 001/028 Pikachu carries a different self-damage line: its Thunder Shock does 30 damage, and only on a coin flip of tails does it also do 10 damage to itself. Like every Pokémon V in the set, it carries the V special rule: when your Pokémon V is Knocked Out, your opponent takes 2 Prize cards instead of the usual one.
The defensive lines vary more across the five Pikachu V-line cards than the attacks do. Pikachu V and the two Surfing cards are all Fighting-Weak (×2) with no Resistance printed; the two Flying cards are Lightning-Weak (×2) with a Fighting Resistance of −30 and no Retreat symbol shown on their pages at all. Pikachu V’s own Retreat cost is a single Energy.
No per-card mirror or holo note is printed anywhere on the S8a database pages. The only official finish statement for the set is on the product page: every S8a card is a holo card, with five holo cards (including one Basic Energy) inserted at random per pack.
S8a’s Five Pikachu V-Line Cards, By Illustrator
S8a carries five cards built around a Pikachu V or Pikachu VMAX, and the illustrator credits split one against four:
| Number | 卡牌 | Illustrator | HP |
|---|---|---|---|
| 020/028 | Pikachu V | HYOGONOSUKE | 190 |
| 021/028 | Surfing Pikachu V | aky CG Works | 200 |
| 022/028 | Surfing Pikachu VMAX | aky CG Works | 310 |
| 023/028 | Flying Pikachu V | aky CG Works | 190 |
| 024/028 | Flying Pikachu VMAX | aky CG Works | 310 |
Their attack lines are all different too: Volt Tackle at {L}{L}{C} for 210, Surf at {W}{W}{W} for 150, Max Surf at {W}{W}{W} for 160 with 30 to each Benched Pokémon, Thunder Shock at {L} for 20 paired with Fly at {C}{C}{C} for 120, and Max Balloon at {L}{C}{C} for 160. Both VMAX cards carry the three-Prize rule rather than the two-Prize V rule.
Add 001/028 Pikachu and the 025/028 Pikachu V-UNION entry and the species accounts for seven of the numbered S8a pages in all. Surfing Pikachu V and Flying Pikachu V already have their own dedicated guide on our site: see Surfing & Flying Pikachu V (S8a) Card Guide for the aky CG Works pair.
