Shadow Rider Calyrex VMAX is a fusion card in the literal sense — Calyrex riding the ghost horse Spectrier — and its printing history is almost as tangled as the artwork. Between its home Japanese set, a VMAX Climax reprint, a Start Deck insert, and the English Chilling Reign and Astral Radiance releases, this single card exists in eleven distinct forms, and the price gap between the cheapest and the chase alt art runs into the hundreds of dollars.
The card debuted in Japan’s 漆黒のガイスト / Jet-Black Spirit wave of S6K, released April 23, 2021, which merged with S6H „Silver Lance“ to become the English set Chilling Reign on June 18, 2021. It reappeared as a rerun in VMAX Climax (S8b) later that year, then again in Astral Radiance’s Trainer Gallery in 2022. Most of those printings are inexpensive; one is not.
This guide lays out every printing in one table, walks through the special-art chase and its secondary CSR counterpart, and covers what the chase card is asking on the secondary market right now — including a graded copy we currently have listed close to the recent asking floor.
If you already own a copy and just want to know what it’s worth, jump to the printings table below and match your card number and rarity marker before you go looking for a price. If you’re shopping for one, the sections that follow break down which printing is the actual chase, which one only looks similar at a glance, and what sellers are currently asking on the secondary market.
Shadow Rider Calyrex VMAX has 11 catalogued printings across Japanese and English releases (2021–2022). The chase is the special-art (SA) alt art S6K 086/070, and we currently have a PSA10 copy listed at ¥139,359 (~$948) (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order) — just above the recent snkrdunk PSA10 asking floor of ¥132,000–¥135,000 (~$898–$918). A rumored „UR 281“ gold printing could not be confirmed against Limitless TCG or Bulbapedia and should be treated as nonexistent.
Prices for our own listings are current or recent asking prices as of August 2026, converted at ¥147/USD, rounded to the nearest dollar. Outside secondary-market figures from snkrdunk are explicitly marked as asking prices, not confirmed sales.
Every Shadow Rider Calyrex VMAX Printing
Eleven printings exist across Japanese and English releases, spanning 2021 to 2022, as catalogued by Bulbapedia and Limitless TCG:
| Set (JP / EN) | Code | Number | Rarity | Year | Artist |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 漆黒のガイスト / Jet-Black Spirit (EN equiv. Chilling Reign) | S6K | 037/070 | RRR | 2021 | 5ban Graphics |
| 漆黒のガイスト | S6K | 085/070 | HR (rainbow) | 2021 | 5ban Graphics |
| 漆黒のガイスト | S6K | 086/070 | HR (SA / alt art) | 2021 | Mitsuhiro Arita (see note below) |
| VMAXクライマックス / VMAX Climax | S8b | 083/184 | RRR reprint | 2021 | 5ban Graphics (base art) |
| VMAXクライマックス | S8b | 236/184 | CSR | 2021 | chibi |
| スタートデッキ100 / Start Deck 100 | SI | 204/414 | Non-holo regular | 2021 | 5ban Graphics (base art) |
| — / Chilling Reign | CRE | 075/198 | Rare VMAX | 2021 | 5ban Graphics |
| — / Chilling Reign | CRE | 204/198 | Secret (Rainbow) Rare | 2021 | 5ban Graphics |
| — / Chilling Reign | CRE | 205/198 | Alternate Art Secret | 2021 | Mitsuhiro Arita |
| — / Astral Radiance Trainer Gallery | ASR | TG18/TG30 | Trainer Gallery (CSR art) | 2022 | chibi |
| — / Astral Radiance Trainer Gallery | ASR | TG30/TG30 | Trainer Gallery Secret (gold) | 2022 | 5ban Graphics |
Two mapping notes are worth knowing before comparing prices across the table. First, the S8b CSR 236/184 (chibi art) is the same illustration as English Astral Radiance’s Trainer Gallery TG18 — one piece of art shared across two languages, not two separate designs; the TG30 gold treatment is an English-only gold version of that same base art with no direct Japanese equivalent. Second, 漆黒のガイスト („Jet-Black Spirit“) is Bulbapedia’s name for the S6K wave that, together with S6H „Silver Lance,“ merged into the single English set Chilling Reign.
You may see a „UR 281“ gold printing referenced online. It could not be confirmed: the VMAX Climax (S8b) set list shows only 083/184 RRR plus the 236/184 CSR, and card number 281 returns no result on Limitless TCG’s Japanese database. Treat any listing claiming an S8b „UR 281“ Shadow Rider Calyrex VMAX as unverified and most likely nonexistent.
The Chase: S6K 086/070 Special Art (SA)
Market consensus points to S6K 086/070 SA in Japan — matched by CRE 205 alt art in English — as the chase printing of Shadow Rider Calyrex VMAX. It’s the signature „ghost-procession“ full-art illustration, and it sits well above every other printing of the card in demand. The S8b CSR 236 functions as a secondary, more affordable character-art chase, while the base RRR (037/070) and Start Deck 100 (204/414) prints occupy the budget and playability tier.
We currently have a PSA10 086/070 HR SA listed at ¥139,359 (~$948) (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order).

Artist attribution for this SA illustration isn’t fully settled. The English counterpart CRE 205 credits Mitsuhiro Arita, and most references carry that credit over to the Japanese 086/070 print — but at least one Bulbapedia data extraction attributes the Japanese version to 5ban Graphics instead. If artist credit matters for your collection, we’d recommend checking the fine print on your own physical copy rather than relying on either attribution alone.
Don’t confuse 086/070 with its numeric neighbor: S6K also has a plain rainbow HR at 085/070, one number earlier in the set, which is a separate and considerably less expensive card than the alt-art SA.
Look at the illustration style, not just the „HR“ label on the card. 085/070 uses a rainbow-holo treatment over a standard VMAX frame; 086/070 is a full-bleed alternate-art illustration with no visible card frame around the artwork. If your copy has artwork running edge to edge with the character posed against a dark, atmospheric background, you’re holding the SA.
The Secondary Chase: S8b CSR 236/184

VMAX Climax’s Character Super Rare 236/184 reruns Shadow Rider Calyrex VMAX in a different illustration by chibi — the same art used for English Astral Radiance’s Trainer Gallery TG18 — and it stands as the set’s secondary chase behind the S6K special art. We currently have a PSA10 236/184 CSR listed at ¥6,468 (~$44), making it the most accessible graded PSA10 printing of this card we carry.
The same set also carries a plain 083/184 RRR reprint using the original base art rather than the CSR’s chibi illustration — a lower-rarity, lower-price option for collectors who want a VMAX Climax copy without paying CSR prices.
VMAX Climax as a whole is built around this kind of two-tier reprint structure — a plain numbered reprint alongside a Character Super Rare in the set’s high-numbered secret block — and Shadow Rider Calyrex VMAX is one of dozens of cards that got the treatment when the set released December 3, 2021. The CSR block is also where the set’s character-art illustrations by chibi live across the board, which is why 236/184 looks so different from both the S6K original and the plain 083/184 reprint sitting right next to it in the same product.
The Pre-Evolution: Shadow Rider Calyrex V
Before it evolves into the VMAX form covered above, Shadow Rider Calyrex appears as a V-stage card in the same S6K set. Two S6K printings of the V card sit side by side below — 075/070, and the special-art (SA) Super Rare 076/070, which we carry graded:
This V-stage card isn’t part of the VMAX printings table above — it’s a separate card, one evolutionary stage below the VMAX this guide focuses on — but it’s worth knowing if you’re chasing the full evolution line. We recently listed a PSA10 076/070 SA SR at ¥11,328 (~$77) (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order); it’s currently out of stock, and restock requests can be placed via Schnellbestellung.
For collectors building a complete run of the card, this V stage sits at a meaningfully lower price tier than either VMAX chase covered above, which makes sense given the general pattern across the Sword & Shield era: the evolved VMAX form almost always carries the higher-demand special-art treatment, while the V-stage predecessor’s alt art trades as a secondary piece rather than the headline chase.
What 086/070 Is Asking Right Now
We currently have a PSA10 086/070 listed at ¥139,359 (~$948) (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order).
On snkrdunk, seven PSA10 086/070 listings were observed spanning ¥132,000 to ¥350,000 as asking prices, not confirmed sales. The two freshest listings by listing ID sat at ¥132,000 and ¥135,000, while the ¥350,000 figure carries an older listing ID and reads as a stale, unsold high ask rather than current pricing. Treating the freshest listings as the relevant floor, current PSA10 asking prices center on roughly ¥132,000–¥135,000 (~$898–$918), with the wider observed range running up to ¥350,000 (~$2,381). Our own listing at ¥139,359 (~$948) sits just above that recent floor.
Un-graded raw copies showed two A-condition asking prices, ¥280,000 (~$1,905) and ¥388,000 (~$2,639), but both carried older listing IDs — we’re presenting those as reference context only, not as a current-market read. A single B-condition listing at ¥77,000 (~$524) is a lone data point and not a usable market anchor on its own.
Put plainly: the freshest outside asking-price data points to roughly ¥132,000–¥135,000 for a PSA10 086/070 as of this writing, with older, stale listings pushing the full observed spread up to ¥350,000. Our own listing sits close to that recent floor rather than the wider historical range. That isn’t a guarantee our price will stay there, and it isn’t a claim about future demand — it’s simply where our current listing sits relative to the freshest asking prices we observed elsewhere.
Every snkrdunk figure above is a seller’s listed asking price, not a completed sale. Treat ranges as a spread of what sellers are currently requesting, not a guaranteed price you’ll pay or receive.
Ice Rider Calyrex VMAX: The Light-Side Counterpart
Shadow Rider Calyrex VMAX is one half of a pair. Pokemon Sword & Shield’s Crown Tundra storyline has Calyrex fusing with either Spectrier, the shadow-type ghost horse depicted on this card, or Glastrier, the ice-type counterpart. That second fusion, Ice Rider Calyrex VMAX, was printed in the parallel S6H set „Silver Lance“ rather than S6K. If you’re collecting the pair together, we currently have a PSA10 Ice Rider Calyrex VMAX HR SA [S6H 085/070] listed at ¥89,013 (~$606) (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order).
S6H and S6K are the linked sister sets that each carry one of the two fusions, before both merged into the single English set Chilling Reign. Collectors chasing „the Calyrex pair“ specifically mean these two special-art VMAX printings — one shadow, one ice — released across the two sister sets rather than pulled from the same booster box.
How to Get One
Three practical paths depending on budget and what you’re after:
- Buy the chase directly. Our PSA10 086/070 HR SA is currently listed at ¥139,359 (~$948) (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order).
- Go for the secondary chase at a lower price. Our PSA10 236/184 CSR is currently listed at ¥6,468 (~$44).
- Search for the V-stage card or other printings via Quick Order. Our Quick Order page is the fastest way to check availability on the 076/070 V SA SR, the plain HR at 085/070, or other printings we don’t keep permanently listed.
One note on condition: like most SWSH-era special-art cards, the 086/070 SA’s full-bleed surface shows edge and surface wear readily on raw copies. Raw and PSA10 asking prices for this card aren’t directly comparable — one reflects ungraded condition risk, the other a third-party-verified gem mint. PSA independently determines authenticity and grade — a PSA10 label reflects PSA’s own assessment of the individual submitted card, not a promise from us.

Whether you’re after the S6K special-art chase, the more accessible S8b CSR, the pre-evolution V card, or the Ice Rider counterpart from S6H, the same four listings above cover the printings we currently list in graded form, and Quick Order is the place to start for anything outside that list.
Häufig gestellte Fragen
Which Shadow Rider Calyrex VMAX printing is the chase?
The special-art (SA) alt art numbered S6K 086/070 in Japan, matched by CRE 205 in English. It’s the signature „ghost-procession“ illustration and sits well above every other printing in demand. We currently have a PSA10 copy listed at ¥139,359 (about $948).
How many Shadow Rider Calyrex VMAX printings exist?
Eleven, across Japanese and English releases from 2021 to 2022, as catalogued by Bulbapedia and Limitless TCG: three from S6K, two from S8b VMAX Climax, one from Start Deck 100, three from English Chilling Reign, and two from English Astral Radiance’s Trainer Gallery.
Is there really a „UR 281“ gold Shadow Rider Calyrex VMAX?
No confirmed evidence supports it. VMAX Climax’s (S8b) set list shows only 083/184 RRR and the 236/184 CSR for this card, and card number 281 returns no result on Limitless TCG’s Japanese database. Treat any listing claiming an S8b „UR 281“ as unverified and most likely nonexistent.
What’s the difference between 085/070 and 086/070?
Both are S6K printings from the same set, one number apart, but they’re different cards. 085/070 is a plain rainbow HR; 086/070 is the special-art (SA) alt art and the far more expensive of the two. Check the artwork style, not just the „HR“ label, before comparing prices.
Where can I buy Shadow Rider Calyrex cards from Japan?
We ship graded and raw Japanese Calyrex singles from Tokyo with tracked delivery. Our PSA10 086/070 SA and 236/184 CSR are listed on their product pages, and our Quick Order page covers other printings and raw copies as availability allows.
