Early Era: Plasma Gale, Cruel Traitor and the SM5 Ultra Sun Commons
Chimchar’s earliest verified Japanese prints run from a 2012 Black & White common through a 2016 XY-block common to a pair of 2017 Sun & Moon commons carrying two different illustrators of the same card number range.

Card number 9/70 in Plasma Gale (BW7), released 14 September 2012, is a Common illustrated by sui — the earliest among the prints with a confirmed release date.
XY11r Cruel Traitor (2016)
Card number 11 in Cruel Traitor (XY11r), released 17 June 2016, is a Common illustrated by Shibuzoh.
SM5S Ultra Sun (2017) — Two Illustrators, One Set
Ultra Sun (SM5S), released 8 December 2017, carries two separate Chimchar commons: number 17/66, illustrated by Ken Sugimori, and number 18/66, illustrated by Kouki Saitou. Kouki Saitou also illustrated the following year’s Ultra Force print (SM5p 5), which has no rarity marking on its own card page. Chimchar’s newest Japanese print is a foil full-art promo, numbered 111/M-P, per Japanese media reporting and the official image numbering. It belongs to 30th CELEBRATION Card Set 4, the Sinnoh-starter entry in a nine-set release that pairs each region’s first-partner trio with its own promos.
Each of the nine sets in the release — including Set 4 — contains the same fixed contents: 3 foil full-art promo cards (one per trio member), 2 randomised booster packs of the 30th CELEBRATION expansion (6 cartas por sobre), and 1 paper card stand that holds 3 cards.

Chase Prints and What Makes Them Collectible
Across the prints we have verified, Chimchar has not carried a higher rarity tier such as AR, SAR, SR or CHR in any Japanese set we checked. Six of its eleven verified prints are Common (C); two — BWP 171 and PPP 002 — are promotional issues; two — SM5p 5 and MC 103 — have no rarity marking on their own card pages; and one, the 2026 30th CELEBRATION promo, is a foil full-art promo.
Six of Chimchar’s ten other verified prints have confirmed English-set equivalents: SV5a 15 pairs with Twilight Masquerade #31, S9 19/100 with Brilliant Stars #24, both SM5S commons with Ultra Prism #20 and #21, XY11r 11 with Steam Siege #18, and BW7 9/70 with Plasma Storm #15 — all matched by illustrator credit on both language editions. The PPP 002 promotional card has no confirmed English equivalent that we have found; we treat that as unverified rather than as a claim about exclusivity.
That leaves the 2026 30th CELEBRATION promo (111/M-P) as the outlier in Chimchar’s print history: the first print we have verified in a foil full-art promo treatment, distributed as one of a fixed set of three promos per card set rather than a random pull. Among the ten other prints we have verified, six are Common, two are promotional issues, and two carry no rarity marking on their own card page.
