Mewtwo VSTAR Universe means the Mewtwo cards in the Japanese Pokémon TCG Pack Haut de Gamme « VSTAR Universe » (S12a), released December 2, 2022: Mewtwo V 050/172, Mewtwo VSTAR 051/172 (RRR) and the Mewtwo VSTAR SAR 221/172. This guide covers what each card does, how the versions differ, and how a PSA 10 copy reaches you from Tokyo.

What is Mewtwo VSTAR Universe, and where do the Mewtwo cards fit?

Mewtwo VSTAR Universe is the set of Mewtwo cards inside the Pack Haut de Gamme « VSTAR Universe », a Japanese Sword & Shield era product with the set code S12a. Mewtwo appears in it in three forms: the basic Mewtwo V, the Mewtwo VSTAR that evolves from it, and the Special Art Rare (SAR) version of Mewtwo VSTAR.

The quick reference below uses the product name, code and date from the official set page. Where a detail comes from our own shop listing rather than the official site, the section says so.

One point matters before you shop: the official set page highlights Mew, Regigigas, Blacephalon and Emboar, and it does not list any Mewtwo cards in its highlights. Which Mewtwo cards are in VSTAR Universe?

There are three Mewtwo cards to know: Mewtwo V (050/172, RR), Mewtwo VSTAR (051/172, RRR) and Mewtwo VSTAR SAR (221/172). The first and third come from official card pages; the 051/172 RRR version is the one named in our PSA 10 listing.

The numbering explains how the set is laid out. The main set runs to 172, and cards numbered above 172 are the special rarities: the official pages show Mew as AR 183/172, Mewtwo VSTAR as SAR 221/172 and Arceus VSTAR as 262/172. The set page says the set introduced two new rarities, AR (Art Rare) and SAR (Special Art Rare), and its gallery shows 17 AR and 25 SAR cards. Mewtwo VSTAR 221/172 is one of those SAR cards.

What does Mewtwo VSTAR do in the Pokémon TCG?

Mewtwo VSTAR is a 280 HP Pokémon VSTAR with an energy-discarding attack and a once-per-game VSTAR Power that hits every opposing Pokémon V. The details below come from the official SAR card page, so they apply to card 221/172.

Psychic Purge: damage that scales with the Energy you discard

Psychic Purge does 90 damage for each Energy you discard, and you can discard up to 3. That means the attack tops out at 270 damage before Weakness and Resistance are applied. Discarding fewer Energy lowers the damage in steps of 90.

The trade-off is plain from the text: you get a large number, but you pay for it with Energy from your Pokémon in play. The card text says « from your Pokémon in play », so the discarded Energy does not have to come from Mewtwo VSTAR alone.

Star Raid: 120 damage to every Pokémon V, once per game

Star Raid deals 120 damage to each of the opponent’s Pokémon V and ignores Weakness and Resistance, so the number is fixed. Against a Pokémon V with 220 HP, such as Mewtwo V itself, 120 damage leaves 100 HP. Because it is a VSTAR Power, you can use it only once per game, so the timing is your decision.

The two-Prize rule

Like every Pokémon VSTAR, Mewtwo VSTAR gives up 2 Prize cards when it is Knocked Out. With 280 HP it has more HP than the 220 HP Mewtwo V, but the opponent still takes 2 Prize cards if it is Knocked Out. The same rule applies to Mewtwo V, because the official page says the opponent takes 2 Prize cards when a Pokémon V is Knocked Out.

How does Mewtwo V 050/172 connect to Mewtwo VSTAR?

Mewtwo V 050/172 is the Basic Pokémon that Mewtwo VSTAR evolves from, so the two cards form one evolution line. The official page lists the stage as « たね », the Japanese label for Basic, with HP 220, rarity RR, illustrated by Nurikabe.

Source for the table and the stats: the official Mewtwo V card page. The card also carries Weakness ×2 and Resistance −30, and the Pokémon V rule gives the opponent 2 Prize cards when it is Knocked Out.

Trans Break does 160 damage and lets you move one Energy attached to Mewtwo V to a Benched Pokémon. Psychokinesis does 50 damage. Because Mewtwo V is itself a Pokémon V, it is one of the Pokémon that Star Raid hits when an opponent plays it.

Mewtwo VSTAR RRR 051/172 or the SAR 221/172: which version should you choose?

Choose the RRR 051/172 if you want a graded Mewtwo VSTAR from our shop, because that is the version our listings name; choose the SAR 221/172 if the SAR rarity is what you are after. The two versions are different card numbers in the same set, with different rarity marks.

The Star Raid and Psychic Purge text in this guide comes from the SAR 221/172 page. The sources do not give the card text of the RRR 051/172, so read the text on the specific number you receive before you rely on it. This is also why we write the full number every time: « Mewtwo VSTAR » alone can mean the RRR or the SAR.

How do the Mewtwo cards compare with other official S12a cards?

The official card pages show a clear pattern: main-set cards carry numbers up to 172, and the special rarities (AR, SAR, UR) are numbered above it. The table puts the Mewtwo cards next to the other cards that have official pages in our sources.

Two things stand out. Mewtwo VSTAR 221/172 and Arceus VSTAR 262/172 both have 280 HP, and both sit above the 172 mark. Mew 183/172 is an Art Rare with 60 HP and an Ability called Mysterious Tail. Arceus VSTAR’s attack is Trinity Nova for 200 damage, with the VSTAR power Star Birth. None of these is a Mewtwo card, so they are context, not substitutes.

How should you read a number like 221/172?

A number such as 221/172 means the card is numbered above the 172 printed total, which is how the official pages show the special rarities in this set. The set page confirms that AR and SAR are the new rarities and that its gallery shows 17 AR and 25 SAR cards. So when a listing says 051/172, it is inside the main numbering, and when a card says 221/172, it is one of the special-rarity cards.

How does a VSTAR Universe pack work, and where does Mewtwo come from?

A VSTAR Universe pack holds 10 randomly inserted cards and guarantees one card that is a V, VSTAR or VMAX. Mewtwo V and Mewtwo VSTAR are cards from this set. The set page does not describe a box configuration, so this guide does not either.

• Pack price at release: 550 yen, tax included, on December 2, 2022.
• New rarities: AR and SAR. Mewtwo VSTAR 221/172 is a SAR.
• Guarantee: one V, VSTAR or VMAX per pack. The pages do not publish odds for any single card, and this article gives none.

The same pack also appears in a second product. The official site announced three Jumbo Card Collection products for December 16, each at 1,980 yen tax included, containing 2 jumbo cards, 3 packs of VSTAR Universe and 2 card stands. The three are Lapras (with Galarian Moltres), Mew (with Oricorio) and Latias (with Ditto). The jumbo cards are AR cards. None of them is a Mewtwo product, so they are not a route to the Mewtwo cards in particular.

A PSA 10 Mewtwo VSTAR is a card graded PSA 10 (Gem Mint), the highest grade PSA certifies, in a PSA case. Our listing describes PSA 10 as awarded only to cards in flawless, gem mint condition.
