They don’t have types in the usual sense. They don’t have Mega Evolutions or regional forms. What the Ultra Beasts got instead, starting in September 2017, was one of the tightest GX rollouts in Sun & Moon history — five creatures across six sets in under a year and a half, capped off by a tag-team finale that closed the door on the whole line.
This guide walks through every Ultra Beast GX and ex card confirmed in the Japanese Sun & Moon era: Nihilego-GX, Buzzwole-GX, Guzzlord-GX, Naganadel-GX, and the Poipole cards that came before and after its evolution. We cover the set each one debuted in, where it got reprinted, and what’s currently available from our Tokyo inventory.
What makes this line worth tracking as a group rather than five separate collecting projects is the compressed timeline. Unlike archetypes that get revisited every couple of years across multiple eras, every confirmed Ultra Beast GX or ex card we found sits inside a single roughly seventeen-month stretch — September 2017 to February 2019 — across just six sets. That makes a complete-the-set approach realistic in a way it isn’t for characters whose card history spans a decade or more.
The Ultra Beast GX era ran from SM4A / SM4S (September 15, 2017) through the SM9B Pheromosa & Buzzwole-GX tag team (February 1, 2019) — six sets, five creatures, one shared timeline. No Ultra Beast singles are currently in our stock; the sealed SM9B booster box (pembaruan: stok habis — minta restock via Quick Order) and SM6 booster box are the two in-stock ways to chase them right now.
Prices below are our own listed prices for currently in-stock sealed product, converted at ¥159/USD. No Ultra Beast singles are currently in stock — card numbers and rarities are sourced from Limitless TCG’s individual card pages as of August 2026.
Who Are the Ultra Beasts in the TCG
Ultra Beasts are the group name for the unusual creatures introduced in the Sun & Moon generation. In the Japanese TCG, their real debut came with a coordinated two-set launch — SM4A “Beasts from the Ultradimension” and SM4S “Awakened Heroes,” both released on September 15, 2017. SM4A ran 55 cards; SM4S was its companion set released the same day. Between them, three of the five Ultra Beasts in this guide got their first GX forms.
From there, the line kept expanding roughly every few months: SM5+ “Ultra Force” (January 19, 2018, 56 cards) added a fourth GX, SM8 “Super-Burst Impact” (September 7, 2018, 103 cards) and SM8b “GX Ultra Shiny” (November 2, 2018, 243 cards) brought a pre-evolution printing and a wave of secret rare reprints, and SM9B “Full Metal Force” (February 1, 2019, 62 cards) closed the arc with a tag-team GX. We have not found any new Ultra Beast GX or ex cards released after SM9B in the sets we checked for this guide.
Five characters appear across those six sets: Nihilego, Guzzlord, Buzzwole, Naganadel, and Poipole. Buzzwole is the only one to receive two separate GX printings (once solo in SM4S, once as part of a tag team in SM9B), and Poipole is the only one that never got a GX or ex form at all — it appears only as a regular-rarity card in two different sets, sitting quietly next to its evolution’s GX debut.
The Launch Duo: Nihilego-GX & Guzzlord-GX (SM4A)
SM4A “Beasts from the Ultradimension” put two Ultra Beasts on GX cards on day one.
Nihilego-GX sits at 022/050, Double Rare (RR). It’s the parasitic Rock/Poison-type Ultra Beast, and SM4A was its only original printing before it resurfaced as a reprint a year later.
Guzzlord-GX sits at 033/050, also Double Rare. Guzzlord’s non-GX form later appeared in SM6 “Forbidden Light” (March 2, 2018, 102 cards) as card 056/094, Rare — a regular-rarity version of the same creature in a separate set six months later. Our SM6 Forbidden Light booster box is the set that non-GX Guzzlord comes from and is currently in stock.
Both launch cards share the same rarity slot — RR, Double Rare — which is the tier SM4A used for its GX cards rather than a higher secret-rare treatment. That puts Nihilego-GX and Guzzlord-GX on equal footing within the set itself; neither outranks the other by print position or rarity code.
Neither Nihilego-GX nor Guzzlord-GX singles are in our stock right now. If you’re chasing SM4A specifically, request a restock via our Quick Order page.
Buzzwole-GX and the Awakened Heroes Half (SM4S)

SM4S “Awakened Heroes” was released the same day as SM4A and carried the third launch-window Ultra Beast: Buzzwole-GX at 030/050, Double Rare. Buzzwole is the Fighting-type Ultra Beast, and this printing is where it entered the GX lineup for the first time.
SM4S is also the set that produced a graded Gladion Supporter SR (055/050) (pembaruan: stok habis — minta restock via Quick Order) from the same release — a trainer card rather than an Ultra Beast, but a reminder that SM4S is a full-size set beyond just Buzzwole-GX.
This first Buzzwole-GX printing wouldn’t be its last appearance. Roughly seventeen months later, Buzzwole came back for a second GX card in a completely different set and format — a tag team pairing covered further down in this guide.
Naganadel-GX and Poipole (SM5+ Ultra Force)
Four months after the SM4A/SM4S launch, SM5+ “Ultra Force” (January 19, 2018, 56 cards) introduced the fourth Ultra Beast GX: Naganadel-GX at 023/050, Double Rare.
The same set includes Poipole at 022/050 — Naganadel’s pre-evolution — sitting right before it in the set numbering. Poipole’s card page does not display a rarity marker, so we’re not stating one here. In the games, Poipole evolves into Naganadel under specific in-game conditions (exposure to Ultra Necrozma’s energy); that’s a species mechanic, not something the TCG cards themselves reference.
The set name itself is worth a note for anyone searching by code: Limitless lists it as “SM5+,” styled with the plus sign, which some databases and older listings render as “SM5p.” Both refer to the same January 19, 2018 release, so if you’re cross-referencing sources and see either code attached to Naganadel-GX or Poipole, you’re looking at the same set.
Poipole’s Common Printing (SM8 Super-Burst Impact)

Poipole got a second printing outside the Ultra Force pairing: SM8 “Super-Burst Impact” (September 7, 2018, 103 cards) placed it at 047/095, this time clearly marked Common. It’s the most accessible Ultra Beast card in this entire guide by rarity, sitting alongside SM8’s headline GX/EX cards as a base-rarity pull.
For anyone assembling a full Ultra Beast set on a budget, this SM8 printing and the SM4A non-GX Guzzlord we covered above are the two entry points — regular-rarity cards from full-size sets rather than the GX chase slots that anchor the rest of this guide.
The Secret Rare Reprints (SM8b GX Ultra Shiny)
SM8b “GX Ultra Shiny” (November 2, 2018, 243 cards) reprinted two of the launch-window GX cards in secret rare form:
| Kartu | Original | SM8b Reprint |
|---|---|---|
| Nihilego-GX | SM4A 022/050 RR | SM8b 222/150 SR |
| Buzzwole-GX | SM4S 030/050 RR | SM8b 228/150 SR |
Both reprints carry the Secret Rare (SR) designation on Limitless TCG’s individual card pages — not the higher Secret Shiny Rare tier that some set-level summaries suggest. If you see either card described as an “SSR,” that’s a mismatch with the individual card listing; we’ve gone with SR for both here.
SM8b is a large set at 243 cards, and its numbering places both reprints well past the 150-card base set (222/150 and 228/150), which is the standard way secret rare cards are numbered above a set’s printed total. Both are listed as reprints of the original SM4A and SM4S cards rather than new characters entering the line.
The Tag-Team Finale: Pheromosa & Buzzwole-GX (SM9B)

SM9B “Full Metal Force” (February 1, 2019, 62 cards) brought Buzzwole back for a second GX card, this time paired with fellow Ultra Beast Pheromosa in a tag-team slot: Pheromosa & Buzzwole-GX at 001/054, Double Rare, opening the set at card #1. The same set also lists higher-rarity treatments of this card at 055/054 (SR) and 063/054 (HR) on set summary pages, though we haven’t pulled the individual Limitless card pages for those two to confirm rarity independently — treat those two numbers as unconfirmed for now.
This is the last Ultra Beast GX or ex card we found released in the sets covered by this guide. Nothing after SM9B (February 2019) has come up in our research, though that reflects what we’ve checked rather than a claim that the line will never return.
Structurally, it’s a fitting bookend. The line opened with two solo GX cards launched on the same day (SM4A and SM4S) and closed with two Ultra Beasts sharing a single tag-team card. Buzzwole is the only character to appear in both the opening and closing chapters.
SM9B is also the set with the best current stock position of the whole lineup — the SM9B Full Metal Wall booster box (pembaruan: stok habis — minta restock via Quick Order) is where the tag-team card comes from.

Ten confirmed printings across five characters and six sets, all sitting inside a roughly seventeen-month window from September 2017 to February 2019. By rarity: six cards sit at the RR (Double Rare) tier that carried this era’s GX cards, two are Secret Rare reprints from SM8b, one is a base Common, and one is a regular Rare. The Poipole SM5+ printing is the single line item where we’re withholding a rarity call, since the individual card page didn’t display one.
Reading the table by set rather than by character, three of the six sets carry two Ultra Beast entries each — SM4A (Nihilego-GX and Guzzlord-GX), SM5+ (Naganadel-GX and Poipole), and SM8b (the two Secret Rare reprints). The other three sets — SM4S, SM6, and SM8 — each carry exactly one, and SM9B carries the single tag-team card that features two characters at once.
How to Collect the Ultra Beast Line
With every Ultra Beast single currently outside our stock, the practical routes right now split between sealed product we already carry and restock requests for the harder-to-source SM4A/SM4S/SM5+/SM8/SM8b window:
- Sealed SM9B “Full Metal Force” boxes — currently listed at ¥52,500 (~$330) (pembaruan: stok habis — minta restock via Quick Order), the set that contains the Pheromosa & Buzzwole-GX tag-team card.
- Sealed SM6 “Forbidden Light” boxes — currently listed at ¥71,400 (~$449), the set that contains the non-GX Guzzlord.
- Restock requests for SM4A, SM4S, SM5+ Ultra Force, SM8, and SM8b singles or boxes via our Quick Order page.
- PSA-graded copies when they surface — PSA independently determines authenticity and grade, so a graded Ultra Beast GX is a different purchase decision than a raw single. Browse our full graded inventory on the PSA10 card list page.
Where to Buy Ultra Beast Cards from Japan
We ship Japanese sealed product out of Tokyo with tracked delivery. If you want a shot at the Ultra Beast GX line, sealed SM9B product is the one currently in stock that directly contains an Ultra Beast card, and the SM6 box gets you into the non-GX Guzzlord printing from the same era.
For singles from SM4A, SM4S, SM5+ Ultra Force, SM8, or SM8b, or for other Sun & Moon era product, our Quick Order page is the fastest way to submit a restock request or build a mixed order. If you’re building out a broader Sun & Moon collection, our Legendary Beasts guide covers a comparable multi-card group from an earlier era, and our Gholdengo cards guide and Heracross cards guide cover single-character lines if you’re comparing collecting approaches.
