If you are comparing Pokemon starter decks made in Japan, the range is narrower than the catalogue of boxes suggests: a handful of 60-card products, a few accessories that change the price, and one random-deck line. This guide ranks the starter and deck products we currently list, from lowest to highest listed price, and sets each one against what the official pokemon-card.com pages say it contains. The lineup runs from the single random deck in the MEGA スタートデッキ100 バトルコレクション to the three fixed decks of the MEGA スターターセットex, and up to the large deck sets.
Every ranking here is a ranking of facts you can check: our listed price, the official list price, whether the deck is fixed or random, and which accessories are in the box. Nothing in it is a verdict on which deck is stronger, because the official pages make no such claim and we do not either.
We sell Japanese sealed product and graded singles from Tokyo. Our prices are shown as “currently listed at” with the product page linked; official manufacturer prices are labelled “official price” and are not our prices. USD figures convert at ¥154/USD and are approximate.
- Lowest listed price: the MEGA Start Deck 100 Battle Collection is a single random 60-card deck, with one of 100 decks and at least two Pokémon ex in every deck (official wording).
- Fixed decks: the MEGA スターターセットex line has three fixed decks at an official price of ¥1,800 each, with a coin and playmat in the box.
- Two decks to battle: the official pages for both lines state that a match needs two or more decks, so the practical comparison is a pair of products, not one.
- Not covered: contents of the larger deck sets are not stated in the official pages we used, so they are listed here with price only.
How This Ranking Works
The ranking covers the starter and deck products in our current listings. It uses four columns, each one checkable on a product page or an official page: the price we currently list, the official price printed by The Pokémon Company, whether the contents are fixed or random, and what is in the box besides the cards.
Two limits apply. First, we list only what the facts support. Where an official page says nothing about a product’s contents, the table says so instead of guessing. Second, a price ranking says nothing about quality. The MEGA スタートデッキ100 バトルコレクション and the MEGA スターターセットex serve different jobs, and the official beginner page separates them by what the buyer wants: booster packs for people who “want to get cards”, and ready-built 60-card decks for people who want to start battling quickly.
If you want the underlying product histories first, our Start Deck 100 Battle Collection guide and the Starter Set ex comparison cover each line in depth; this article is the side-by-side view.
The Ranking: Lowest to Highest Listed Price
The table orders our current starter and deck listings by listed price. Prices link to the product pages, which show the current terms. The Starter Set ex Eevee ex has no listed price on October 29, 2026, so it sits outside the ranking and is covered in the fixed-deck section.
| Peringkat | Produk | Currently listed at | Official price | Format |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | MEGA Start Deck 100 Battle Collection | ¥1,097 (~$7) | ¥891 | 1 × 60-card deck, random (one of 100) |
| 2 | Starter Set ex Zorua & Zoroark ex | ¥1,584 (~$10) | ¥1,800 | 1 × 60-card deck, fixed, with coin and playmat |
| 3 | Starter Set ex Sprigatito & Meowscarada ex | ¥1,796 (~$12) | ¥1,800 | 1 × 60-card deck, fixed, with coin and playmat |
| 4 | MEGA Premium Trainer Box | ¥8,974 (~$58) | not stated in our sources | contents not stated in our sources |
| 5 | 30th CELEBRATION Premium Deck Set Espeon & Umbreon | ¥17,999 (~$117) | not stated in our sources | contents not stated in our sources |
| 6 | Special Deck Set ex Venusaur & Charizard & Blastoise | ¥37,417 (~$243) | not stated in our sources | contents not stated in our sources |
| 7 | MEGA Start Deck 100 Battle Collection – White Box | ¥38,570 (~$250) | — | separate listing of the Start Deck 100 line |
Three things follow from the table. The top three rows are the true entry-level products: each is one 60-card deck. Their listed prices sit within about ¥700 of each other, and the two Starter Set ex listings are each below the ¥1,800 official price, while the MEGA Start Deck 100 Battle Collection is above its ¥891 official price. Both facts are simply what the listings say; we do not claim a reason for the gap. Rows four to six are larger products whose official contents we have not verified, and row seven is a separate listing of the Start Deck 100 line whose differences from the regular listing are explained in our regular vs White Box guide.
The Single Random Deck: MEGA Start Deck 100
The MEGA スタートデッキ100 バトルコレクション went on sale on Friday, December 19, 2025 at an official price of ¥891 (official product page). Its page describes a single 60-card deck drawn from all 100 types: “one of the 100 will be yours”. It also states that every deck contains two or more Pokémon ex, and that a match needs two or more decks. In the box besides the cards there is one sheet of damage counters and markers; the page lists no coin and no playmat.
That is the point about this product that matters for a ranking. It is the lowest-priced row, and the random element is part of what you are buying. If you buy one, you cannot choose which of the 100 decks arrives.
The Start Deck 100 family also has a collector side that is separate from the starter question: the official card database lists secret numbers above the deck range, such as ピカチュウV 415/414 in the 2021 スタートデッキ100. Our Start Deck 100 Battle Collection guide is the place to start on that side. For the question this article answers, the relevant fact is only that a random deck is a different purchase from a fixed one.
Two official notices are worth knowing. On December 19, 2025 the manufacturer said it plans to continue additional production depending on sales (official notice). On December 20, 2025 it published a packing-error correction for deck No.004 and No.101 and a support form for exchanges (official notice). Both are notices about the product, not about our stock.
The Three Fixed Decks: MEGA Starter Set ex
The MEGA スターターセットex line was released on Friday, July 31, 2026 at an official price of ¥1,800 per deck (official product page). It has three decks: イーブイex, ゾロア＆ゾロアークex and ニャオハ＆マスカーニャex. Our listing names for the Starter Set ex Eevee ex, the Starter Set ex Zorua & Zoroark ex and the Starter Set ex Sprigatito & Meowscarada ex pair with the three decks on that page. Do not confuse the Sprigatito listing with the earlier スターターセットex ニャオハ＆ルカリオex of Friday, January 20, 2023: ours is the Meowscarada ex pairing.
| Deck (official name) | Type | Pokémon named on the page | Our listing |
|---|---|---|---|
| イーブイex | 雷 (Lightning) | イーブイex, パーモット, イーブイ (full art), デリバード | Starter Set ex Eevee ex: no listed price on October 29, 2026 |
All three decks are fixed: the contents are the same in every box of a given deck. The page notes that デリバード appears in all three, and that the decks include some reprinted cards. For each box, the official contents are a 60-card deck, a paper damage counter and marker sheet, a coin, a playmat, a player’s guide and a rules sheet.
Because these are fixed, the ranking among the three is not about contents. It is the price shown on the listing and the Pokémon you prefer. Our Starter Set ex comparison guide goes through the earlier lines in more detail.
What Is in the Box, Product by Product
Price is not the only thing that differs. Official pages list the accessories in each box, and they differ more than the card count does. The table below uses those lists, and includes two official reference rows (the full-size Battle Academy and the 2025 MEGA スターターセット) so the entry-level products can be read against the products above them in the official lineup.
| Product (official page) | Decks × cards | Coin | Playmat | Damage counters / markers | Guides |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| MEGA スタートデッキ100 バトルコレクション | 1 × 60 | not listed | not listed | 1 sheet | not listed |
| MEGA スターターセットex (3 decks) | 1 × 60 | 1 | 1 | 1 sheet (paper) | player’s guide 1, rules sheet 1 |
| スターターセットMEGA (reference row) | 1 × 60 | 1 | 1 | 1 sheet | player’s guide 1, rules sheet 1 |
| バトルアカデミー (reference row) | 4 × 60 | 1 | 1 | 1 sheet (cardboard) | starter guides 2, step-up guide 1 |
The practical reading: if you buy the MEGA スタートデッキ100 バトルコレクション, you buy cards and a counter sheet; coin and playmat come from elsewhere. If you buy one of the MEGA スターターセットex decks, the coin and mat are in the box. Neither gives you an opponent’s deck, which is why the official pages say two or more decks are needed.
For a first purchase, there are therefore two sensible shapes. The first is two fixed decks from the MEGA スターターセットex line, for example the Zorua & Zoroark ex deck at ¥1,584 (~$10) and the Sprigatito & Meowscarada ex deck at ¥1,796 (~$12). The second is a mix: one fixed deck for its coin and mat, and a MEGA Start Deck 100 for a second deck whose identity is a surprise. Our beginner play guide explains the turn structure if you have never played.
The Larger Deck Products
Rows four to six of the ranking are bigger purchases, and the facts we can verify about them are thin. We list the MEGA Premium Trainer Box at ¥8,974 (~$58), the 30th CELEBRATION Premium Deck Set Espeon & Umbreon at ¥17,999 (~$117) and the Special Deck Set ex Venusaur & Charizard & Blastoise at ¥37,417 (~$243). Their official prices and full contents are not stated in the sources behind this guide, so we do not rank them on contents or value. They are decks and card sets.
One comparison we can support is the Trainer Box against the Start Deck 100: our MEGA Premium Trainer Box vs Start Deck 100 guide compares the two. The official site also lists a スペシャルデッキセットMEGA on its beginner page next to the current expansion pack as a prebuilt-deck option, but we have no product page for that one.
Official Prices Across the Starter Lines in Our Sources
For context, the table ranks the official Japanese starter and beginner lines in our sources below by official price, lowest first. These are official list prices from pokemon-card.com, not our store prices, and the table says nothing about which lines are still sold. Where a product page prints a price with tax added, the table says so.
| Peringkat | Product line | Release | Official price | Fixed or random |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | exスタートデッキ (8 types) | Fri, Jul 7, 2023 | ¥550 | Fixed (an おまかせ version is random) |
| 2 | exスタートデッキ テラスタル | Fri, Nov 24, 2023 | ¥660 each | Fixed |
| 3 | スタートデッキ100 | Fri, Dec 17, 2021 | ¥790 | Random |
| 4 | MEGA スタートデッキ100 バトルコレクション | Fri, Dec 19, 2025 | ¥891 | Random |
| 5 | いつでもどこでも ファミリー (S&S) | Fri, Jul 9, 2021 | ¥1,210 | Fixed, 2 decks |
| 6 | いつでもどこでも バトルアカデミー | Fri, Mar 8, 2024 | ¥1,360 | Fixed, 2 decks |
| 7 | スターターセット (ex, ステラ, MEGA, MEGA ex) | 2023 to 2026 | ¥1,800 each | Fixed |
| 8 | ファミリーポケモンカードゲーム (SM) | Fri, Mar 15, 2019 | ¥1,980 + tax | Fixed, 3 decks |
| 9 | ファミリーポケモンカードゲーム (S&S) | Fri, Jul 9, 2021 | ¥2,398 | Fixed, 3 decks |
| 10 | バトルアカデミー (SV) | Fri, Mar 8, 2024 | ¥3,290 | Fixed, 4 decks |
Reading down the table, single decks (rows one to four and seven) cost between ¥550 and ¥1,800, and every multi-deck box (rows five, six, eight, nine and ten) lists a playmat or half playmats among its contents, and the three full-size boxes (rows eight, nine and ten) also list guides. The random-deck lines are rows three and four, plus the おまかせ version in row one. Anything we list from this table is covered in the sections above; the rest are historical reference.
On October 29, 2026 fan sites reported a Japanese trademark filing for 「バトルスタートデッキ」 (working English translation: Battle Start Deck; no official English name exists), which collectors read as a possible beginner deck product; nothing is announced. Our Battle Start Deck trademark guide explains what is confirmed and what is not.
Where to Buy Japanese Starter Decks
The entry-level decks we currently list are the MEGA Start Deck 100 Battle Collection at ¥1,097 (~$7), the Starter Set ex Zorua & Zoroark ex at ¥1,584 (~$10) and the Starter Set ex Sprigatito & Meowscarada ex at ¥1,796 (~$12). If you want the cards from released sets rather than a ready-made deck, the card list hub shows the cards inside each set with official images. For a first purchase of any kind, our guide to the best Japanese Pokémon sets for beginners sets starter decks beside booster-based options, and the sibling guide on which Japanese starter deck to buy first turns this ranking into a decision. The ex★ names reported in October 2026 are collected in our ex★ 2027 round-up.
