A “cool” Pokemon card isn’t a rarity tier. It’s the alt-art background, the way a full-bleed illustration breaks the usual card frame, the pose an ordinary print never gets. Japan’s rarity ladder has its own vocabulary for these treatments — SA, SAR, MUR, BWR — but the printed rarity on a card tells you almost nothing about how good the artwork actually is.

What Counts as a “Cool” Pokemon Card Here
These are our picks, not a rarity ranking or a value ranking. We judged each card on the artwork treatment — alt-art or full-bleed layout, illustrator style, foil or gold execution — and how dynamic the character composition is on the card itself. A card’s printed rarity tier and how good it looks on a table are two different things, and they don’t always line up.
You’ll see four Japanese-only rarity labels below: SAR and SR, the standard alt-art and secret-rare tiers, plus MUR and BWR, which are set-specific top tiers with their own printed lettering. 1. Rayquaza VMAX — 083/067, S7R Blue Sky Stream
Our #1 pick tops the list at the highest PSA 10 price in this lineup, and the artwork backs it up. Rayquaza VMAX 083/067 is an HR-tier alt-art print from S7R Blue Sky Stream (the Japanese counterpart to Evolving Skies), illustrated by Anesaki Dynamic and released 9 July 2021. The community often calls this style “SA,” but the card itself is stamped HR, not SAR — a distinction worth knowing before you go looking for it under the wrong rarity. Full-body Dragon-type artwork breaking the card frame is what earns it the top artwork spot here, and it’s also our highest PSA 10 anchor, currently listed at ¥1,216,624 (~$7,652) (更新：当前售罄 — 可通过 Quick Order 申请补货). 2. Mega Charizard X ex — 116/080, M2 Inferno X
Illustrated by takuyoa and released 26 September 2025, this MUR-tier card is one of the newest prints on this list and still one of the sharpest. The 116/080 print carries the top rarity stamp in M2 Inferno X (the Japanese release of Phantasmal Flames), and the black-and-flame colour treatment on a 360 HP Mega Pokemon is the kind of card that photographs well from across a table. 3. Umbreon & Darkrai GX (Alt Art) — 182/173, SM12a Tag All Stars
Released 4 October 2019 in SM12a Tag All Stars, the JP 高级包 that paired the two Darkness-type icons on one card. The 182/173 print is the SR alt-art version, and it’s held its place among the most requested Tag Team GX prints for a reason — a full-scene illustration of both Pokemon rather than the standard split-panel layout most Tag Team cards use. 4. Zekrom ex — 174/086, SV11B Black Bolt
SV11B Black Bolt released 6 June 2025, and the 174/086 Zekrom ex carries the set’s BWR top rarity — a stamp exclusive to this set’s highest tier. Illustrated by takuyoa, the same artist behind pick #2 above, it puts the Lightning-type legendary in a full dark-and-gold treatment that stands well apart from Zekrom’s more conventional prints. 5. Team Rocket’s Mewtwo ex — 125/098, SV10 Glory of Team Rocket
Released 18 April 2025 and illustrated by Iwamoto05, this SAR gives Mewtwo a Team Rocket colour palette and setting rarely seen on the character — a Psychic-type staple reworked into a themed heist scene rather than the usual solo-Pokemon pose. 6. Tyranitar V (SA) — 077/070, S5I Single Strike Master

7. Umbreon V (SA) — 085/069, S6a Eevee Heroes
Released 28 May 2021 in S6a Eevee Heroes, this Umbreon V alt-art by Teeziro is one of the most recognisable cards from the entire Eeveelution set — a moonlit night scene that trades the usual battle pose for something closer to a mood piece. 8. Charizard ex (Tera) — 134/108, SV3 Ruler of the Black Flame
Released 28 July 2023 in SV3 Ruler of the Black Flame (the Japanese release of Obsidian Flames), AKIRA EGAWA’s Tera-type Charizard ex reworks the character in the crystalline Tera treatment — a print style that only exists in this handful of sets. 9. Greninja ex — 090/066, SV5a Crimson Haze
Released 22 March 2024 in SV5a Crimson Haze (the Japanese release of Twilight Masquerade), akagi’s Greninja ex leans into motion — a mid-leap composition that suits the character better than most of its earlier prints. 10. Aerodactyl V (SA) — 106/100, S11 Lost Abyss
Released 15 July 2022 in S11 Lost Abyss (the Japanese release of Lost Origin), Nurikabe’s Aerodactyl V alt-art is a fossil Pokemon rendered as a full aerial scene — not the most obvious pick for a “cool” card, and that’s exactly why it earns a slot here. It’s currently listed at ¥33,659 (~$212) in PSA 10, our best entry point among the higher-tier alt-arts on this list.
11. Mewtwo VSTAR — 221/172, S12a VSTAR Universe
