Cool Pokemon Cards: 12 Japanese Prints With the Best Artwork

Cool Pokemon Cards: 12 Japanese Prints With the Best Artwork

A “cool” Pokemon card isn’t a rarity tier. It’s the alt-art background, the way a full-bleed illustration breaks the usual card frame, the pose an ordinary print never gets. Japan’s rarity ladder has its own vocabulary for these treatments — SA, SAR, MUR, BWR — but the printed rarity on a card tells you almost nothing about how good the artwork actually is.

This is an editorial pick list, not an investment ranking. If you want the value-and-appreciation angle on Japanese cards, our best Japanese Pokemon cards to invest in guide covers that separately. Here we picked 12 Japanese prints across 11 sets released between October 2019 and September 2025, judged purely on artwork, illustrator work and print treatment — then ranked them by our own currently listed PSA 10 price, high to low.

We ship every card below, along with the sealed product it came from, out of Tokyo. All prices are our own store listings, not third-party market data, converted at ¥159/USD (September 2026).

Key Takeaways

Twelve Japanese Pokemon prints, chosen for artwork rather than rarity tier. Our #1 pick, Rayquaza VMAX HR (S7R 083/067) (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order), is also our highest PSA 10 anchor at ¥1,216,624 (~$7,652). Our most affordable pick, Charizard VSTAR SAR (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order), is currently listed at ¥30,248 (~$190). Ranking basis: our own listed PSA 10 prices, high to low — not third-party market data.

What Counts as a “Cool” Pokemon Card Here

These are our picks, not a rarity ranking or a value ranking. We judged each card on the artwork treatment — alt-art or full-bleed layout, illustrator style, foil or gold execution — and how dynamic the character composition is on the card itself. A card’s printed rarity tier and how good it looks on a table are two different things, and they don’t always line up.

You’ll see four Japanese-only rarity labels below: SAR and SR, the standard alt-art and secret-rare tiers, plus MUR and BWR, which are set-specific top tiers with their own printed lettering. We’re not expanding those letters out in this article — our Japanese rarity symbols guide covers what each one stands for and where it sits on Japan’s rarity ladder. Community shorthand also calls certain alt-art prints “SA” even when the card itself is stamped SR, SAR or HR — our SA / Special Art guide explains that naming split in full.

Our Picks: 12 Japanese Cards, Ranked

Ranked by our currently listed PSA 10 price, high to low.

1. Rayquaza VMAX — 083/067, S7R Blue Sky Stream

Rayquaza VMAX 083/067 HR, S7R Blue Sky Stream
Rayquaza VMAX 083/067 HR, S7R Blue Sky Stream

Our #1 pick tops the list at the highest PSA 10 price in this lineup, and the artwork backs it up. Rayquaza VMAX 083/067 is an HR-tier alt-art print from S7R Blue Sky Stream (the Japanese counterpart to Evolving Skies), illustrated by Anesaki Dynamic and released 9 July 2021. The community often calls this style “SA,” but the card itself is stamped HR, not SAR — a distinction worth knowing before you go looking for it under the wrong rarity. Full-body Dragon-type artwork breaking the card frame is what earns it the top artwork spot here, and it’s also our highest PSA 10 anchor, currently listed at ¥1,216,624 (~$7,652) (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order). See every printing of this card in our Rayquaza VMAX card guide, or read more on the illustrator in our Anesaki Dynamic artist guide.

2. Mega Charizard X ex — 116/080, M2 Inferno X

Mega Charizard X ex 116/080 MUR, M2 Inferno X
Mega Charizard X ex 116/080 (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order) MUR, M2 Inferno X

Illustrated by takuyoa and released 26 September 2025, this MUR-tier card is one of the newest prints on this list and still one of the sharpest. The 116/080 print carries the top rarity stamp in M2 Inferno X (the Japanese release of Phantasmal Flames), and the black-and-flame colour treatment on a 360 HP Mega Pokemon is the kind of card that photographs well from across a table. It’s currently listed at ¥493,460 (~$3,104) (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order) in PSA 10. For the full print run of this card, see our Mega Charizard X ex card guide; for what MUR means on the rarity ladder, see the rarity symbols guide.

3. Umbreon & Darkrai GX (Alt Art) — 182/173, SM12a Tag All Stars

Umbreon & Darkrai GX 182/173 SR, SM12a Tag All Stars
Umbreon & Darkrai GX 182/173 (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order) SR, SM12a Tag All Stars

Released 4 October 2019 in SM12a Tag All Stars, the JP High Class Pack that paired the two Darkness-type icons on one card. The 182/173 print is the SR alt-art version, and it’s held its place among the most requested Tag Team GX prints for a reason — a full-scene illustration of both Pokemon rather than the standard split-panel layout most Tag Team cards use. It’s currently listed at ¥381,436 (~$2,399) (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order) in PSA 10. Every printing of this card is covered in our Umbreon & Darkrai GX card guide.

4. Zekrom ex — 174/086, SV11B Black Bolt

Zekrom ex 174/086 BWR, SV11B Black Bolt
Zekrom ex 174/086 (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order) BWR, SV11B Black Bolt

SV11B Black Bolt released 6 June 2025, and the 174/086 Zekrom ex carries the set’s BWR top rarity — a stamp exclusive to this set’s highest tier. Illustrated by takuyoa, the same artist behind pick #2 above, it puts the Lightning-type legendary in a full dark-and-gold treatment that stands well apart from Zekrom’s more conventional prints. It’s currently listed at ¥137,698 (~$866) (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order) in PSA 10. (A separate SAR print of the same card, Zekrom ex 169/086 (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order), is a different anchor entirely — check the number before you buy.)

5. Team Rocket’s Mewtwo ex — 125/098, SV10 Glory of Team Rocket

Team Rocket's Mewtwo ex 125/098 SAR, SV10 Glory of Team Rocket
Team Rocket’s Mewtwo ex 125/098 (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order) SAR, SV10 Glory of Team Rocket

Released 18 April 2025 and illustrated by Iwamoto05, this SAR gives Mewtwo a Team Rocket colour palette and setting rarely seen on the character — a Psychic-type staple reworked into a themed heist scene rather than the usual solo-Pokemon pose. It’s currently listed at ¥123,244 (~$775) (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order) in PSA 10.

6. Tyranitar V (SA) — 077/070, S5I Single Strike Master

Tyranitar V 077/070 SR, S5I Single Strike Master
Tyranitar V 077/070 (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order) SR, S5I Single Strike Master

S5I Single Strike Master (JP “Ichigeki Master”) released 22 January 2021, and HYOGONOSUKE’s alt-art Tyranitar has stayed a fan favourite since. It’s currently listed at ¥110,990 (~$698) (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order) in PSA 10.

7. Umbreon V (SA) — 085/069, S6a Eevee Heroes

Umbreon V 085/069 SR, S6a Eevee Heroes
Umbreon V 085/069 (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order) SR, S6a Eevee Heroes

Released 28 May 2021 in S6a Eevee Heroes, this Umbreon V alt-art by Teeziro is one of the most recognisable cards from the entire Eeveelution set — a moonlit night scene that trades the usual battle pose for something closer to a mood piece. It’s currently listed at ¥108,526 (~$683) (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order) in PSA 10. More of the artist’s work is covered in our Teeziro artist guide.

8. Charizard ex (Tera) — 134/108, SV3 Ruler of the Black Flame

Charizard ex 134/108 SAR, SV3 Ruler of the Black Flame
Charizard ex 134/108 (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order) SAR, SV3 Ruler of the Black Flame

Released 28 July 2023 in SV3 Ruler of the Black Flame (the Japanese release of Obsidian Flames), AKIRA EGAWA’s Tera-type Charizard ex reworks the character in the crystalline Tera treatment — a print style that only exists in this handful of sets. It’s currently listed at ¥97,150 (~$611) (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order) in PSA 10. We cover this card alongside every other Japanese Charizard chase print in our top 10 Charizard Japanese cards guide.

9. Greninja ex — 090/066, SV5a Crimson Haze

Greninja ex 090/066 SAR, SV5a Crimson Haze
Greninja ex 090/066 (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order) SAR, SV5a Crimson Haze

Released 22 March 2024 in SV5a Crimson Haze (the Japanese release of Twilight Masquerade), akagi’s Greninja ex leans into motion — a mid-leap composition that suits the character better than most of its earlier prints. It’s currently listed at ¥66,198 (~$416) (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order) in PSA 10.

10. Aerodactyl V (SA) — 106/100, S11 Lost Abyss

Aerodactyl V 106/100 SR, S11 Lost Abyss
Aerodactyl V 106/100 (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order) SR, S11 Lost Abyss

Released 15 July 2022 in S11 Lost Abyss (the Japanese release of Lost Origin), Nurikabe’s Aerodactyl V alt-art is a fossil Pokemon rendered as a full aerial scene — not the most obvious pick for a “cool” card, and that’s exactly why it earns a slot here. It’s currently listed at ¥33,659 (~$212) (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order) in PSA 10, our best entry point among the higher-tier alt-arts on this list.

11. Mewtwo VSTAR — 221/172, S12a VSTAR Universe

Mewtwo VSTAR 221/172 SAR, S12a VSTAR Universe
Mewtwo VSTAR 221/172 (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order) SAR, S12a VSTAR Universe

Released 2 December 2022 in S12a VSTAR Universe, GOSSAN’s Mewtwo VSTAR SAR is one of two picks from this set on our list. It’s currently listed at ¥30,796 (~$194) (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order) in PSA 10.

12. Charizard VSTAR — 212/172, S12a VSTAR Universe

Charizard VSTAR 212/172 SAR, S12a VSTAR Universe
Charizard VSTAR 212/172 (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order) SAR, S12a VSTAR Universe

Also from S12a VSTAR Universe and released the same day as pick #11, KIYOTAKA OSHIYAMA’s Charizard VSTAR SAR closes the list as our most affordable pick — a full-scene Fire-type illustration from one of the most artwork-dense sets Japan has produced. It’s currently listed at ¥30,248 (~$190) (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order) in PSA 10. It also appears in our top 10 Charizard Japanese cards guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

How did you choose which Pokemon cards are “cool”?

This is an editorial pick list based on artwork treatment, illustrator style and print execution — not a rarity tier or investment ranking. We ranked the 12 picks by our own currently listed PSA 10 price, high to low.

Is Rayquaza VMAX 083/067 a secret rare?

No. The card is printed with an HR rarity stamp, not SAR. The community sometimes calls this alt-art style “SA,” but that’s a naming convention, not the rarity printed on the card — see our SA / Special Art guide for the full distinction.

What’s the difference between MUR, BWR and SAR?

They’re Japanese-only rarity labels, each specific to certain sets. Our Japanese rarity symbols guide covers what each letter combination stands for and where it sits on the rarity ladder.

Which of these cards is the most affordable to start with?

Charizard VSTAR 212/172 SAR, currently listed at ¥30,248 (~$190) in PSA 10, is the most affordable pick on this list. Aerodactyl V 106/100 SR at ¥33,659 (~$212) is close behind.

Can I buy sealed boosters for these sets from Japan?

Yes. We ship sealed Japanese booster boxes out of Tokyo, including S12a VSTAR Universe, the set behind two of the picks above. Check the product link or our Quick Order page for current availability.

Are these prices from TCGplayer or another market tracker?

No. Every price in this article is our own store’s current PSA 10 listing, converted at ¥159/USD (September 2026). We don’t quote third-party market prices.
