Volcarona Cards Guide: Every Japanese Printing

Volcarona Cards Guide: Every Japanese Printing

Volcarona has been reprinted across five separate Japanese Pokémon TCG eras — from a single 2015 Rare to a double-slot appearance in 2025’s Black Bolt. That’s a decade of continuous printing history packed into one card line, spanning the XY, Sun & Moon, Sword & Shield, and Scarlet & Violet eras.

What makes this line interesting to track is how the card’s mechanic changed with each set. Volcarona started as a plain evolution card in Bandit Ring, moved through a GX slot in Alter Genesis, then a V slot in Blue Sky Stream, and settled back into standard rarity tiers — a Common and, most recently, a paired Rare and Art Rare — across Super Electric Breaker and Black Bolt. Each mechanic shift also changed how many copies exist and which set it comes bundled with.

This guide walks through every verified Japanese Volcarona printing we’ve confirmed — card numbers, rarities, and the sealed boxes each one comes from — so you know exactly what you’re looking at and where to find it.

Key Takeaway

Six confirmed Volcarona card variants span five Japanese sets released between 2015 and 2025: a Rare in XY7 Bandit Ring, a GX in SM12 Alter Genesis, a V in S7R Blue Sky Stream, a Common in SV8 Super Electric Breaker, and both a Rare and an Art Rare in SV11B Black Bolt. No Volcarona single is currently in stock on its own — every listed anchor here is a sealed booster box that contains the card.

Every Confirmed Volcarona Printing

Here is every Japanese Volcarona card we’ve verified card number, rarity, and set for, in release order:

卡牌 Set Code Rarity Release
Volcarona Bandit Ring XY7 017/081 R 2015-06-20
Volcarona-GX Alter Genesis SM12 013/095 RR 2019-09-06
Volcarona V Blue Sky Stream S7R 015/067 RR 2021-07-09
Volcarona Super Electric Breaker SV8 014/106 C 2024-10-18
Volcarona Black Bolt SV11B 019/086 R 2025-06-06
Volcarona Black Bolt SV11B 104/086 AR 2025-06-06

Three evolution tiers show up across the line: a plain evolution card (XY7, SV8, and both SV11B slots), a GX form (SM12), and a V form (S7R). No VMAX printing has turned up in our research, so if you see one listed elsewhere, treat that as unconfirmed until you can check the card number against the set directly.

How the Card Changed Across a Decade of Sets

Reading the table above in order gives you a rough timeline of how Pokémon’s special-mechanic system moved through Volcarona:

  • 2015 — XY7 Bandit Ring: a standard Rare evolution card, no special mechanic. This is the baseline version most collectors picture first.
  • 2019 — SM12 Alter Genesis: the GX slot, which puts an extended attack text box and a large holographic treatment on the card. This was the marquee special-rarity mechanic of the Sun & Moon era.
  • 2021 — S7R Blue Sky Stream: the V slot, Sword & Shield’s successor mechanic to GX, with its own frame and full-art conventions.
  • 2024 — SV8 Super Electric Breaker: back to a plain Common. No special mechanic was applied to Volcarona in this Scarlet & Violet-era set.
  • 2025 — SV11B Black Bolt: two slots at once — a standard Rare and a separately numbered Art Rare, a rarity tier Black Bolt uses for its higher-end alternate-art chase cards.

No two consecutive sets in this list used the same treatment, which is part of why checking the card number and rarity code on your specific copy matters more than going by memory of “the Volcarona card.”

How to Confirm Which Printing You Have

Japanese Pokémon cards print the set code and card number along the bottom edge of the card, usually in the format NNN/TTT next to a small set symbol. For Volcarona, that means checking for one of six exact combinations: 017/081 (Bandit Ring), 013/095 (Alter Genesis, marked GX), 015/067 (Blue Sky Stream, marked V), 014/106 (Super Electric Breaker), or 019/086 and 104/086 (both Black Bolt).

Two of these are easy to mix up at a glance: the Black Bolt Rare (019/086) and Art Rare (104/086) share the same set and total-count denominator but carry very different card numbers and full-art treatments, so it’s worth checking the printed number rather than assuming from the artwork style alone. Similarly, don’t confuse card number with total set size — the Art Rare’s “104” numerator exceeds Black Bolt’s own 086 base count, which is normal for alternate-art secret-style slots in modern Japanese sets and doesn’t indicate a printing error.

The 2015 Original: XY7 Bandit Ring

Volcarona R 017/081 Bandit Ring XY7
Volcarona R 017/081, Bandit Ring (XY7), released June 20, 2015

Volcarona’s earliest confirmed Japanese printing sits in Bandit Ring (XY7), numbered 017/081 at Rare rarity. This is the plain, single-evolution version of the card — no GX or V text box, just the standard XY-era frame.

Bandit Ring boxes are not currently in stock on our end. If you’re chasing this specific printing, the fastest route is a restock request via our Quick Order page — we can flag interest and reach out if a box or single comes back into rotation.

The GX Era: SM12 Alter Genesis

Volcarona-GX RR 013/095 Alter Genesis SM12
Volcarona-GX RR 013/095, Alter Genesis (SM12), released September 6, 2019

Four years later, Volcarona got its GX treatment in Alter Genesis (SM12) — card 013/095, RR. This is the only GX-form Volcarona confirmed in our research, and it puts the card into the larger attack text box and holographic GX frame typical of the Sun & Moon era.

We currently list the SM12 Alter Genesis Japanese Booster Box at ¥63,000 (~$396), which is where the Volcarona-GX comes from as a pull. There’s no standalone single listing right now, so the box is the direct route to this card.

The V Era: S7R Blue Sky Stream

Volcarona V RR 015/067 Blue Sky Stream S7R
Volcarona V RR 015/067, Blue Sky Stream (S7R), released July 9, 2021

Blue Sky Stream (S7R) brought Volcarona into the V mechanic with card 015/067, again at RR. This is the Sword & Shield-era V frame, distinct from both the earlier GX card and any later ex-based printings.

Our S7R Blue Sky Stream Japanese Booster Box is currently listed at ¥306,600 (~$1,928) — the highest box price of any set in this Volcarona line, reflecting how this particular set has traded on our shelf. It’s a significant purchase for a single set, so it’s worth confirming box configuration and your budget before committing.

Back to Basics: SV8 Super Electric Breaker

Volcarona C 014/106 Super Electric Breaker SV8
Volcarona C 014/106, Super Electric Breaker (SV8), released October 18, 2024

After two special-mechanic printings, Volcarona returned to a plain Common slot in Super Electric Breaker (SV8), card 014/106. It’s the most accessible printing in the lineup on paper — a base-rarity card in a mainline Scarlet & Violet set.

We currently list the SV8 Super Electric Breaker Japanese Booster Box at ¥28,288–32,436 (~$178–$204), with pricing varying by listing. It’s the lowest-cost box entry point in this guide if you’re building out a Scarlet & Violet-era collection alongside the Volcarona chase.

The Newest Prints: SV11B Black Bolt

The most recent Volcarona activity is in Black Bolt (SV11B), released June 6, 2025, which carries the card twice — a Rare and an Art Rare version, both from the same set.

Volcarona R 019/086 Black Bolt SV11B

Volcarona R 019/086 (Black Bolt)

Volcarona AR 104/086 Black Bolt SV11B

Volcarona AR 104/086 (Black Bolt)

The 019/086 printing is the standard Rare slot, and 104/086 is the Art Rare variant — a numbered-past-the-set-total alternate art, a rarity tier Black Bolt uses for its chase cards. Both come from the same booster box.

We currently list the SV11B Black Bolt Japanese Booster Box at ¥23,320–24,480 (~$147–$154), and there’s also a Black Bolt DX box currently listed at ¥20,600–27,872 (~$130–$175) if you’re comparing configurations. Box Economics at a Glance

Since every Volcarona printing in this guide currently routes through a sealed booster box rather than a single, it’s worth lining the five boxes up side by side. Prices below are our own current listings, converted at ¥159/USD:

Set Volcarona card(s) Our box price
Bandit Ring (XY7) R 017/081 Not currently in stock
Alter Genesis (SM12) GX RR 013/095 ¥63,000 (~$396)
Blue Sky Stream (S7R) V RR 015/067 ¥306,600 (~$1,928)
Super Electric Breaker (SV8) C 014/106 ¥28,288–32,436 (~$178–$204)
Black Bolt (SV11B) R 019/086 + AR 104/086 ¥23,320–24,480 (~$147–$154)
Black Bolt DX (SV11B) R 019/086 + AR 104/086 ¥20,600–27,872 (~$130–$175)

Two things stand out from this table. First, the Blue Sky Stream box sits well above the rest of the lineup — if your goal is specifically the Volcarona V and nothing else, that’s a lot of sealed product to open for one card, so weigh whether a full box or a targeted single (once one becomes available) makes more sense for your budget. Second, the two most recent boxes — Super Electric Breaker and both Black Bolt configurations — sit in a comparatively tight band under ¥33,000, making the current Scarlet & Violet era the more approachable entry point of the five.

None of these figures reflect market resale value or third-party pricing — they are our own listed box prices as of this writing, and box prices on our shelf can change as stock turns over.

How to Collect Volcarona Cards

Since no single Volcarona card is currently in stock on its own, the practical way to work toward any of these six printings is through the sealed booster box that contains it:

If you’re building a wider Bug/Fire or Sun & Moon-era binder, our other character guides cover similar single-Pokémon print histories — see the Heracross cards guide and the Weavile cards guide for comparable set-by-set breakdowns.

Where to Buy Japanese Volcarona Cards

We ship Japanese sealed product out of Tokyo with tracked delivery. Since Volcarona singles are not currently listed, the five booster boxes above are the direct way to pull one of these six confirmed printings. Our graded PSA10 card list is also worth checking periodically in case a graded Volcarona single surfaces.

常见问题

Is there a Volcarona V?

Yes — Volcarona V, RR rarity, card 015/067 in Blue Sky Stream (S7R), released July 9, 2021. It’s the only V-mechanic Volcarona confirmed across the five sets in this guide, and the booster box that contains it is currently our highest-priced Volcarona anchor.

Does Volcarona appear in Black Bolt?

Yes — Black Bolt (SV11B, released June 6, 2025) carries both a Rare (019/086) and an Art Rare (104/086) Volcarona. Both come from the same booster box, and a separate Black Bolt DX box configuration also contains the same two card slots.

What is Volcarona’s earliest notable Japanese print?

The earliest printing confirmed in this research is Volcarona R, 017/081, from Bandit Ring (XY7), released June 20, 2015. It predates the GX and V mechanics that appear in later Volcarona cards, so it uses the plain XY-era evolution card frame.

Is there a Volcarona GX card?

Yes — Volcarona-GX, RR rarity, card 013/095, from Alter Genesis (SM12), released September 6, 2019. This is the only GX-form Volcarona confirmed in our research; no second GX printing turned up across the other four sets covered here.

Is there a Volcarona VMAX?

No VMAX printing of Volcarona was confirmed in this research. The confirmed evolution-mechanic printings are limited to the GX (SM12) and V (S7R) forms, alongside plain evolution-rarity cards in the other three sets.
