Unova’s starter trio split across two sets when Japan’s newest expansion pair launched — and the split isn’t even. One set got the whole grass line up to a special art rare. The other got both the fire and water evolutions, but nothing above alternate art.
If you’ve been searching for where the Unova starters landed in Black Bolt and White Flare, this guide maps every alternate-art and SAR print — Serperior ex, Snivy, Tepig, Emboar, Oshawott, and Samurott — to its exact set and card number, plus two earlier VSTAR-era prints of Serperior and a Hisuian Samurott worth knowing if you’re building out the line historically. We ship Japanese sealed product out of Tokyo every week, and Black Bolt and White Flare are both current stock.
That split matters if you’re opening product for a specific card rather than collecting broadly. Chasing Serperior ex means Black Bolt and only Black Bolt — there’s no chance of pulling it from a White Flare box, and vice versa for Emboar or Samurott. Knowing the line before you buy saves you from opening the wrong box entirely.
Serperior and Snivy are exclusive to Black Bolt, currently listed at ¥24,128. Emboar, Tepig, Samurott, and Oshawott are all in White Flare, currently listed at ¥20,800. Both boxes are Japanese-language, released June 6, 2025 — sourcing requests for either box or for singles from the set run through our Quick Order page.
Box prices are currently listed prices as of August 2026, converted at ¥163/USD where noted. This is a sourcing guide — we don’t hold single-card stock of the Unova starters, so pricing below covers sealed boxes and confirmed graded singles from the same sets only.
Every Unova Starter Print and Where It’s From
Eight current prints across four sets, plus the two 2025 boxes that started the split:
| Karte | Number | Rarity | Set | Year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Serperior ex | SV11B 167/086 | SAR | Black Bolt | 2025 |
| Snivy | SV11B 087/086 | AR | Black Bolt | 2025 |
| Tepig | SV11W 096/086 | AR | White Flare | 2025 |
| Emboar | SV11W 098/086 | AR | White Flare | 2025 |
| Oshawott | SV11W 102/086 | AR | White Flare | 2025 |
| Samurott | SV11W 104/086 | AR | White Flare | 2025 |
| Serperior VSTAR | S11a 006/068 | RRR | Incandescent Arcana | 2022 |
| Hisuian Samurott VSTAR | S9a 053/067 | RRR | Battle Region | 2022 |
The pattern is straightforward once you see it laid out: Black Bolt carries the grass line (Snivy to Serperior) on its own, while White Flare carries both the fire line (Tepig to Emboar) and the water line (Oshawott to Samurott). If you’re opening boxes specifically to chase one evolution family, that split determines which box you actually need — it isn’t one starter per box the way some sets divide their mascots.
Each line also stops at a different evolution stage depending on the card. The Basic-stage prints — Snivy, Tepig, and Oshawott — are alternate-art versions of the entry-level Pokemon, while Emboar and Samurott are the fully-evolved, two-stage forms carrying an ability and a scaling attack. Serperior ex goes a step further as a Pokemon ex, which is why it’s the only one of the seven printed at the higher SAR rarity rather than AR.
The Black Bolt Line: Snivy and Serperior ex (SAR)
Snivy (087/086, AR) is the entry point for the line — a Basic Grass Pokemon at 70 HP, illustrated by Yoshimi Miyoshi, with a Tackle for 10 and a Vine Whip for 30. It’s the alternate-art print of the base card, so the artwork runs full-frame rather than the standard boxed layout.
The chase card of the pair is Serperior ex (167/086, SAR), a two-stage evolution at 320 HP illustrated by Ryota Murayama. Its ability boosts every attack your Pokemon use by an extra 20 damage, and its own attack for four Energy (one of them Grass) hits for 150 while also letting you search three cards from your deck.
Black Bolt’s regular set runs to 086 cards, so anything numbered above that — like Serperior ex at 167/086 — is a secret rare printed well past the base set count. Don’t confuse it with a lower-numbered, non-secret Serperior print from the same box.
For the rest of the set’s chase cards, our Black Bolt best cards guide covers the full lineup alongside Serperior ex.
White Flare’s Fire Line: Tepig to Emboar
Tepig (096/086, AR) starts the line as a Basic Fire Pokemon at 70 HP, illustrated by Orca. It’s a straightforward alternate-art print with no ability — the interesting card in this line is what it evolves into.
Emboar (098/086, AR) is a two-stage evolution at 180 HP, illustrated by NC Empire. Its ability lets you attach any number of basic Fire Energy from your hand freely during your turn — a callback to the same free-attachment idea that Emboar carried in the original Black & White era, now rebuilt for the current rules. Its attack costs four energy (three Fire, one Colorless) and deals 120 damage. Between the ability and the flat damage output, Emboar is built to ramp fast and hit hard once it’s set up.
White Flare’s Water Line: Oshawott to Samurott
![Samurott [SV11W 104/086] AR (White Flare)](https://samuraiswordtokyo.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/img_unova_sv11w_104_r_jp_5391b276dc79-1.webp)
Oshawott (102/086, AR) opens the water line as a Basic Water Pokemon — the third of White Flare’s starter forms alongside Tepig, and, like Tepig, the setup piece for a stronger evolution.
Samurott (104/086, AR) is a two-stage evolution at 160 HP, illustrated by DOM. Its ability switches both active Pokemon — yours and your opponent’s — with a Pokemon on each bench, which makes it useful for repositioning rather than pure damage. Its attack costs a single energy, deals 30 base damage, and adds 50 more for every Water Energy attached to it, so a heavily-energized Samurott can swing for well over 100 in one hit. Between Emboar’s ramp and Samurott’s positional control plus scaling damage, White Flare’s two evolved starters play very differently from each other despite sharing a box.
Our White Flare best cards guide has the rest of the set’s chase cards, including where Emboar and Samurott rank against the box’s other alternate-art and secret-rare pulls.
Before Black Bolt: Serperior VSTAR and Hisuian Samurott VSTAR
Black Bolt and White Flare aren’t the first time these two evolutions got a high-rarity treatment. Serperior VSTAR (006/068, RRR) appeared in 2022’s Incandescent Arcana, illustrated by PLANETA Mochizuki, at 270 HP with a three-energy attack for 190 that also lets you rearrange Energy, and a VSTAR Power whose damage scales with attached Energy. Hisuian Samurott VSTAR (053/067, RRR) appeared the same year in Battle Region, illustrated by 5ban Graphics — a regional-variant Dark-type form of the final water evolution, also at 270 HP, with a VSTAR Power that adds four damage counters to an opposing Pokemon.
Neither of these is part of the current Black Bolt / White Flare lineup — they’re separate prints from a different set era — but they’re worth knowing if you’re tracking every high-rarity Serperior or Samurott print rather than just the newest ones. We source both boxed and single-card Japanese product through the same Quick Order page used for current sets.
Sourcing the Unova Starters Through Black Bolt and White Flare
Because Serperior ex only comes out of Black Bolt, and Emboar and Samurott only come out of White Flare, sealed boxes are the direct route to any of the three at pack-fresh condition.
Both boxes also carry the sets‘ other headline chase cards, and we currently list graded singles pulled from the same print runs, including:
- PSA 10 Reshiram ex BWR (SV11W 174/086) — currently listed at ¥123,559 (~$758), the set’s headline BWR secret rare in our graded stock
- PSA 10 N’s Plan SAR (SV11B 173/086) — currently listed at ¥18,907 (~$116), from the same box as Serperior ex
- PSA 10 Genesect ex SAR (SV11B 172/086) — currently listed at ¥8,443 (~$52) (Update: derzeit ausverkauft — Nachschub über Quick Order anfragen), also from Black Bolt
We don’t hold single-card stock of Serperior ex, Emboar, or Samurott outside of what’s graded and listed above. Restock requests and sourcing for other singles from either set run through Schnellbestellung.
If you’re deciding between the two boxes rather than opening both, our Black Bolt vs White Flare box guide compares the full pull lineup and pricing of each. It’s also worth deciding upfront whether you want a box for the odds of pulling Serperior, Emboar, or Samurott specifically, or whether you’re buying for the set’s broader chase cards — Reshiram ex, N’s Plan, and Genesect ex are the headline pulls independent of the starter lines, and all three ship as graded singles from stock we already hold.
