Magikarp & Wailord GX SA: Every Printing & Price

Magikarp & Wailord GX SA: Every Printing & Price

Two of the least intimidating Pokemon in the franchise — a fish that flops and a whale that floats — ended up on one of the Tag Team GX era’s most tightly-priced chase cards. On secondary-market listings, Magikarp & Wailord GX’s Special Art printing behaves nothing like its cast.

Magikarp & Wailord GX (コイキング&ホエルオーGX) debuted in Japan’s SM9 タッグボルト / Tag Bolt (December 7, 2018) as part of the same wave of TAG TEAM Pokemon-GX cards that gave the mechanic its name — two Pokemon sharing one card, a higher HP pool, and three Prize cards for the opponent on a knockout. Eight confirmed printings exist across Japanese and English releases, and the one collectors chase is a one-off commissioned artwork by illustrator OOYAMA that never got a second print run.

The TAG TEAM Pokemon-GX mechanic ran from that December 2018 Tag Bolt release through Cosmic Eclipse in November 2019, and across that entire era, the pattern repeats: the standard full art (5ban Graphics‘ in-house template) sits below a single Special Art print — a one-off commissioned scene by a guest illustrator, rather than the studio’s usual full-art layout. Collectors treat that Special Art slot as the definitive version of each TAG TEAM card, and Magikarp & Wailord GX’s OOYAMA print is no exception.

This guide tables every printing of Magikarp & Wailord GX, walks through the Special Art chase card in detail, and lines up secondary-market asking prices against our own catalog. We ship Japanese Tag Bolt singles out of Tokyo, so the pricing here reflects what we’re actually working with.

Key Takeaway

The chase printing is the Tag Bolt (SM9) SR Special Art 099/095, illustrated by OOYAMA. It’s currently listed at ¥324,220 (~$2,206) (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order) as a PSA 10 in our catalog — just under snkrdunk’s asking-price band of ¥328,000–¥330,000 across four active listings, one of the tightest ranges we’ve seen for any card in this era. The base-rarity RR 019/095 sits at the opposite end, recently listed at ¥15,652 (~$106).

Every Magikarp & Wailord GX Printing and What It’s Worth

Per the Tag Bolt and Team Up set lists, eight confirmed printings of Magikarp & Wailord GX exist across two languages — four Japanese and four English (including a promo). Here’s every one, ranked by price where we have it:

# Karte Set Year Preis
1 Magikarp & Wailord GX 099/095 SR (Special Art, OOYAMA) Tag Bolt (SM9, JPN) 2018 currently listed at ¥324,220 (~$2,206) (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order)
2 Magikarp & Wailord-GX 161/181 (Special/Alternate Full Art, OOYAMA) Team Up (TEU, ENG) 2019 not in our catalog — see market snapshot below
3 Magikarp & Wailord GX 111/095 HR (Rainbow) Tag Bolt (SM9, JPN) 2018 not currently in our catalog
4 Magikarp & Wailord GX 098/095 SR (Full Art) Tag Bolt (SM9, JPN) 2018 not currently in our catalog
5 Magikarp & Wailord-GX 183/181 (Rainbow) Team Up (TEU, ENG) 2019 not in our catalog
6 Magikarp & Wailord-GX 160/181 (Full Art) Team Up (TEU, ENG) 2019 not in our catalog
7 Magikarp & Wailord-GX SM166 (regular art) Towering Splash-GX Box promo (SM-P, ENG) 2019 not in our catalog
8 Magikarp & Wailord GX 019/095 RR Tag Bolt (SM9, JPN) 2018 recently listed at ¥15,652 (~$106) (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order)

Two things are worth flagging up front. First, English has no in-set regular-art print of this card — Team Up skipped straight from the base rarity to full art, and the standard Mitsuhiro Arita artwork only reached English collectors as the SM166 promo bundled with the Towering Splash-GX Box (January 4, 2019). Second, there is no Tag All Stars (SM12a) reprint of this card at all — unlike several other Tag Team GX cards, Magikarp & Wailord GX’s story ends with Tag Bolt and Team Up.

For the broader Tag Team GX era this card belongs to, see our best Tag Team GX cards guide, and for two other cards from the same generation, our Umbreon & Darkrai GX card guide and Eevee & Snorlax GX card guide cover the same 2018–2019 window.

The Chase Card: SR Special Art 099/095

Magikarp & Wailord GX 099/095 Special Art SR Tag Bolt card
Magikarp & Wailord GX 099/095, Special Art SR — Tag Bolt (SM9)

Tag Bolt (SM9) released December 7, 2018 as a 95-card base set with a run of secret-slot cards on top, and Magikarp & Wailord GX carries three of those secret prints: a standard 5ban Graphics full art (098/095), a Rainbow (111/095), and the Special Art at 099/095, illustrated by OOYAMA rather than 5ban’s in-house team. Like the other Special Art prints from this era — the so-taro art on Umbreon & Darkrai GX, Hasuno’s work on Espeon & Deoxys GX — it’s a one-off commissioned scene rather than the standard full-art template, and it exists in only this single Japanese printing plus its English counterpart.

That scarcity shows up directly in the asking prices. Four independent snkrdunk listings for the PSA 10 currently cluster between ¥328,000 and ¥330,000 (~$2,231–$2,245) — an unusually tight spread for a graded secondary-market card, where ranges of several tens of thousands of yen are typical. Our own catalog price sits just under that band: this PSA 10 copy is currently listed at ¥324,220 (~$2,206) (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order).

Telling the Full Arts Apart

Tag Bolt packs three secret-slot versions of this card into consecutive numbers: 098 (standard full art, 5ban Graphics), 099 (Special Art, OOYAMA), and 111 (Rainbow). All three carry different artwork treatments — check the card number in the bottom corner before assuming you have the Special Art.

The base-rarity RR 019/095 is the entry point — standard holofoil frame, Mitsuhiro Arita art, the copy most people pull first out of a booster box. It’s recently listed in our catalog at ¥15,652 (~$106) (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order) as a PSA 10; if you’re after this tier, submit a restock request through Schnellbestellung.

The 098/095 full art (5ban Graphics) and the 111/095 Rainbow (also 5ban Graphics) round out the Tag Bolt secret-slot run for this card. Both use the studio’s standard full-art or rainbow-foil template rather than a commissioned scene, and neither is currently in our catalog. We don’t have a usable snkrdunk asking-price range for either — both sit in the middle of the lineup between the RR and the Special Art, below the SA’s one-off commissioned-art premium, since they’re a different production tier from the guest-illustrator print even though all three share the same secret-slot rarity classification.

Between these four Tag Bolt printings, the numbering itself tells the story: 019 is the base card inside the 095-card set, and 098, 099 and 111 are all secret-slot cards numbered above the set’s printed total — a common convention for Japanese chase cards. If your copy’s number is anywhere from 096 upward, you’re holding one of the three premium versions rather than the standard pull.

The English Counterpart: Team Up

Team Up (TEU, SM9’s English release) came out February 1, 2019, and printed this card three times in-set, plus once more as a standalone promo:

Set / Product Number Rarity Artist Year
Team Up 160/181 Rare Ultra (Full Art) 5ban Graphics 2019
Team Up 161/181 Rare Ultra (Special/Alternate Full Art) OOYAMA 2019
Team Up 183/181 Rare Rainbow 5ban Graphics 2019
Towering Splash-GX Box promo SM166 Promo (regular art) Mitsuhiro Arita 2019

The English Special Art sits at 161/181, carrying the same OOYAMA artwork as the Japanese 099/095 — not 183/181, which is the separate Rainbow rare. That mix-up is common enough to be worth flagging: 183/181 and 161/181 are visually distinct treatments, and only one of them is the Special Art. Notably, English collectors can’t get the standard Arita art inside the set at all — it only exists as the SM166 promo card bundled with the Towering Splash-GX Box release (January 4, 2019). English singles for this card are not currently in our catalog, so no dollar figures are quoted for the Team Up printings here; the Japanese Special Art remains the version we handle directly.

Team Up released February 1, 2019 — almost two months after Tag Bolt’s December 7, 2018 debut. That gap meant Japanese collectors and importers had first access to the OOYAMA artwork nearly two months before it existed in English at all, on either the 161/181 Special Art or any other Team Up printing.

Secondary-Market Asking Prices

We checked snkrdunk’s marketplace for independent context on the Japanese Special Art across grading tiers. These are asking-price spreads from active listings, not confirmed sales, so treat them as a directional check against our own catalog price rather than a market consensus:

  • SR Special Art 099/095, PSA 10: four listings clustered tightly at ¥328,000, ¥329,000, ¥330,000 and ¥330,000 (~$2,231–$2,245) — one of the narrowest asking-price spreads we’ve seen for a graded card in this era, and the band our own ¥324,220 catalog listing sits just under.
  • SR Special Art 099/095, PSA 9: two listings at ¥95,000 and ¥123,800 (~$646–$842) — roughly a third of the PSA 10 band, underlining how much of this card’s value depends on the top grade.
  • SR Special Art 099/095, raw (ungraded): three listings across different stated conditions — ¥70,000 (C), ¥77,000 (B) and ¥160,000 (A) (~$476–$1,088). The condition spread here is wide, so read this as „roughly ¥70,000–¥160,000 depending on condition“ rather than a single figure.

We did not find a usable multi-listing asking-price range on snkrdunk for the RR 019/095, the 098/095 full art, the 111/095 Rainbow, or any of the Team Up English printings at the time of this check — our own catalog price for the RR above is the only pricing given for that tier in this guide.

Reading across the three tiers, the grading step-up is steep: PSA 10 asking prices (¥328,000–¥330,000) sit well above 2x the PSA 9 band (¥95,000–¥123,800), which itself overlaps the top of the raw condition-dependent range (¥70,000–¥160,000). For a card this dependent on a single one-off illustration, that gap is a reminder that centering and surface condition on this particular Special Art print carry an outsized effect on what a copy is actually worth.

Which Magikarp & Wailord GX Fits Your Budget

Working from the catalog and market figures above:

  • Under $150 — SM9 RR 019/095, recently listed at ¥15,652 (~$106) (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order). A genuine PSA 10 of the original 2018 Tag Bolt print for a fraction of the Special Art’s price.
  • $650–$1,100 — the Special Art 099/095 at lower grades: PSA 9 asking prices run ¥95,000–¥123,800 (~$646–$842), and raw copies (condition-dependent) run roughly ¥70,000–¥160,000 (~$476–$1,088) per snkrdunk listings. Same artwork, a step below top-grade pricing.
  • $2,200+ — the PSA 10 Special Art 099/095, our catalog’s top listing for this card at ¥324,220 (~$2,206) (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order), sitting just under snkrdunk’s four-listing PSA 10 band of ¥328,000–¥330,000.
On the PSA 10 Tier

A ¥328,000–¥330,000 asking-price band across only four listings is thin by volume even though it’s tight in range. If you’re buying at this tier, decide your target price before you shop rather than anchoring to the newest listing you see.

Häufig gestellte Fragen

What is the most valuable Magikarp & Wailord GX printing?

The Tag Bolt (SM9) Special Art SR 099/095, illustrated by OOYAMA. It’s currently listed at ¥324,220 (about $2,206) as a PSA 10 in our catalog, just under snkrdunk’s four-listing PSA 10 asking-price band of ¥328,000–¥330,000.

How many versions of Magikarp & Wailord GX are there?

Eight confirmed printings: four Japanese (Tag Bolt RR 019/095, SR full art 098/095, SR Special Art 099/095, HR Rainbow 111/095) and four English (Team Up full art 160/181, Special Art 161/181, Rainbow 183/181, and the SM166 regular-art promo from the Towering Splash-GX Box). There is no Tag All Stars (SM12a) reprint of this card.

What’s the difference between Team Up 161/181 and 183/181?

161/181 is the Special/Alternate Full Art carrying the OOYAMA artwork — the English counterpart to the Japanese 099/095 chase card. 183/181 is a separate Rainbow rare printing with standard 5ban Graphics artwork.

How much is the base-rarity Magikarp & Wailord GX worth?

The RR 019/095 from Tag Bolt is recently listed in our catalog at ¥15,652 (about $106) as a PSA 10 — a small fraction of the Special Art’s price for the same set’s standard holofoil print.

Where can I get the regular-art English version?

It’s not available inside the Team Up set itself — the standard Mitsuhiro Arita art only reached English collectors as the SM166 promo card bundled with the Towering Splash-GX Box, released January 4, 2019.
