Mega Sharpedo ex Card Guide: The Original M Sharpedo EX (XY) & Its Japanese Prints

The Best of XY carries a second M Sharpedo EX print in the same set: 178/171, a secret/full-art-tier card that runs past the main 171-card count — the same pattern the set uses for its highest-tier chase cards. It shares the 210 HP, Darkness typing and 5ban Graphics illustration of 071/171, though its exact rarity label is not confirmed on Limitless and should be treated as unverified.

Both prints came out of the same set on the same day — there is no separate reprint set for the vintage card. If your copy reads 178/171 rather than 071/171, it’s the higher-numbered print above, not a different release.

A Different Card: Mega Sharpedo ex (M2 Inferno X)

A modern Japanese Mega Sharpedo ex (メガサメハダーex, lowercase “ex” per the modern naming convention) does exist — it is not the same card as the vintage 071/171 above, and it should never be described as a reprint of it. It appears in M2 “Inferno X” (拡張パック「インフェルノX」, Expansion Pack “Inferno X”), released in Japan on 26 September 2025 — the same set that carries our sibling Mega Lopunny ex guide.

The modern card runs 330 HP, still Darkness-type, and evolves from キバニア (Carvanha) at Stage 1 — a full 120 HP higher than the vintage card’s 210, which is the fastest way to tell the two apart if you only have HP to go on. M2 Inferno X carries three confirmed prints of the card:

Mega Sharpedo ex 51/080, Double Rare

Mega Sharpedo ex 98/080, Secret Rare tier

Mega Sharpedo ex 113/080 (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order), Special Art Rare

51/080 and 98/080 are illustrated by 5ban Graphics; 113/080, the Special Art Rare, is illustrated by nagimiso — a different artist from the vintage print. We don’t currently carry a graded or raw single of any of these three in our catalogue; the way to reach the card today is via a sealed M2 Inferno X Japanese Booster Box (a Damaged Box option is also listed here), and single-card sourcing requests go through Pesan Cepat.

Where These Prints Sit on the Rarity Ladder

Within each set, these prints sit at different points on the Japanese chase-rarity ladder — note that the two eras use different rarity systems entirely, so the ladders below don’t compare across sets.

The Best of XY (vintage): 071/171 sits at the standard Rare Holo tier — the regular holo slot most collectors pull. 178/171, running past the main 171-card count in the set’s secret/full-art tier, sits above it structurally, though its exact rarity code isn’t published.

M2 Inferno X (modern): the three Mega Sharpedo ex prints climb the set’s tier system in order — 51/080 Double Rare (RR) is the mid-tier double-rare slot, 98/080 sits in the set’s Secret Rare tier above the main 80-card count, and 113/080 Special Art Rare (SAR) is the set’s premium full-art illustration tier, distinguished here by its nagimiso artwork.
