Shadow Rider Calyrex VMAX and Ice Rider Calyrex VMAX are the same story told twice — a Psychic-type VMAX and a Water-type VMAX, each given a Special Art HR treatment in its own 2021 Japanese set. In our own graded stock, the two currently sit roughly ¥51,000 apart, and neither one is the least expensive way onto this list.
This guide features seven Calyrex prints across three Japanese sets: the two HR Special Art chase cards from Jet-Black Spirit and Silver Lance, their standard RRR printings, the Character Super Rare reprints from VMAX Climax, and the single King-form Calyrex that comes before either VMAX split. We ship Japanese sealed product and graded singles out of Tokyo every week, and the prices below reflect our own current catalog.
Two Calyrex VMAX HR Special Art cards anchor this guide: PSA10 Shadow Rider Calyrex VMAX HR SA [S6K 086/070] is currently listed at ¥140,698 (update: uitverkocht — vraag restock aan via Quick Order), and PSA10 Ice Rider Calyrex VMAX HR SA [S6H 085/070] is currently listed at ¥89,425 (update: uitverkocht — vraag restock aan via Quick Order). If you want the same character at a lower price point, PSA10 Shadow Rider Calyrex VMAX CSR [S8b 236/184] is currently listed at ¥7,622.
In-stock prices reflect our own catalog as of August 2026, converted at ¥163/USD for reference. Prints not currently in our stock are noted as such rather than priced.

The pattern here is straightforward once you see it laid out: the HR Special Art versions of each VMAX carry the character’s top price tier, the VMAX Climax CSR reprints put the same characters within reach of a much wider budget, and the standard RRR prints sit in between as the wording-accurate, non-SA version of each VMAX. The sections below cover what separates each tier and how to tell them apart.
The Grail: Shadow Rider Calyrex VMAX HR SA (S6K 086/070)
Shadow Rider Calyrex VMAX is a Psychic-type, 320 HP VMAX from the Jet-Black Spirit set (S6K), released in 2021. Its ability, “Meikai no Tobira,” lets you attach a Psychic Energy from your hand to a Benched Psychic Pokemon once per turn and draw two cards; its attack, “Dyna Geist,” adds 30 damage for every Psychic Energy in play — identical wording to the standard S6K 037/070 print.
The 086/070 HR Special Art version isn’t catalogued in either of the two card databases we cross-check against for this guide, so its card number and set are confirmed instead through matching listings across several Japanese retailers rather than a database entry. There’s also no public CDN image for this specific print yet, so if you’re trying to identify a copy, match the ability and attack wording against the standard version below rather than relying on a reference photo.

The RRR print above (037/070) and the HR SA (086/070) carry the same ability and attack text word for word. What separates them is the rarity slot and the full-bleed Special Art treatment — not a stat or move difference.
A PSA10 copy of the HR SA is currently listed at ¥140,698 (~$863) (update: uitverkocht — vraag restock aan via Quick Order). For the rest of what Jet-Black Spirit packs open into, see our Jet-Black Spirit best cards guide.
Its Counterpart: Ice Rider Calyrex VMAX HR SA (S6H 085/070)
Ice Rider Calyrex VMAX is the Water-type half of the pair, also 320 HP, from the Silver Lance set (S6H), released the same year. Its attacks, “Emperor Ride” and “Dyna Lance,” match the standard S6H 028/070 print word for word — the same relationship as the Shadow Rider pair above.

Silver Lance carries a second, separate HR print of Ice Rider Calyrex VMAX at card number 084/070 — a non-Special-Art rainbow-foil version, distinct from the Special Art card at 085/070 covered here. The two sit on different card numbers within the same set, so check the number before assuming you have one or the other.
Like its Shadow Rider counterpart, the 085/070 HR SA isn’t catalogued in either database we checked against for this pack, and no CDN image exists for it yet — its number is confirmed through matching listings across multiple Japanese retailers. A PSA10 copy is currently listed at ¥89,425 (~$549) (update: uitverkocht — vraag restock aan via Quick Order). For the rest of the set, see our Silver Lance best cards guide.
The Entry Point: Shadow Rider Calyrex VMAX CSR (S8b 236/184)

The high-class pack VMAX Climax (S8b), released later in 2021, reprinted Shadow Rider Calyrex VMAX as a Character Super Rare at card number 236/184 — a character-themed reprint slot that VMAX Climax used across the set. Its number is confirmed on the official card search detail page.
Of the three graded singles anchoring this guide, this is the one priced closest to entry level: a PSA10 copy is currently listed at ¥7,622 (~$47) — the same character, a much smaller number on the price tag. For the rest of what this set carries, see our VMAX Climax card list guide.
More Calyrex in VMAX Climax
VMAX Climax didn’t stop at one Calyrex reprint. Ice Rider Calyrex VMAX got its own Character Super Rare at card number 221/184, illustrated by Hitoshi Ariga:

The set also carries a matching pair of Calyrex V CSRs one tier below the VMAX cards: Ice Rider Calyrex V at 220/184 (illustrated by Mitsuhiro Arita) and Shadow Rider Calyrex V at 235/184 (illustrated by Oswaldo KATO). Both are confirmed on the official card search and round out VMAX Climax’s full set of Calyrex character reprints alongside the two VMAX CSRs above.
Beyond VMAX Climax, both Jet-Black Spirit and Silver Lance also carry a second-tier Special Art single below their HR cards: an SR Special Art of Shadow Rider Calyrex V at S6K 076/070 (illustrated by kodama) and an SR Special Art of Ice Rider Calyrex V at S6H 073/070 (illustrated by OKACHEKE). Neither is currently in our stock, but both are confirmed prints if you’re mapping out the full collecting tree for either character.
Before the Split: The King Form Calyrex

Every Shadow Rider and Ice Rider card above is a VMAX built around a Basic Pokemon that comes before either split: a single, King-form Calyrex. The Japanese print worth knowing is a Grass-type, 110 HP Basic from the Incandescent Arcana set (S11a), released September 2, 2022, illustrated by Nurikabe, at card number 011/068.
Its attacks are “Ouno Saihai,” which lets you take up to two cards from your deck into your hand, and “Bloom Shine,” a 90-damage attack that also heals 20 HP from every Pokemon you have in play. Unlike the VMAX cards above it, this print doesn’t have an in-stock listing on our site right now, but it’s a useful reference point for collectors building out the character’s full card family rather than just its VMAX forms. It’s currently sourced case by case via our Quick Order page.
Chasing Calyrex Through Sealed Product
Both VMAX Climax CSRs come out of the same box, which makes it the most direct sealed-product route to either character at the CSR tier:
If you’d rather open packs from the two HR sets directly, both are currently listed as sealed boxes:
- S6K Jet-Black Geist Japanese Pokemon Booster Box — currently listed at ¥20,790 (~$128)
- S6H Silver Lance Japanese Pokemon Booster Box — currently listed at ¥18,900 (~$116)

Veelgestelde vragen
What is the difference between Shadow Rider and Ice Rider Calyrex VMAX?
They’re two forms of the same character split into separate cards: Shadow Rider Calyrex VMAX is Psychic-type from Jet-Black Spirit (S6K), and Ice Rider Calyrex VMAX is Water-type from Silver Lance (S6H). Both got an HR Special Art print in 2021 — Shadow Rider’s is currently listed at ¥140,698, Ice Rider’s at ¥89,425.
Is the HR SA Calyrex VMAX the same card as the RRR version?
The ability and attack text match word for word between the HR Special Art print and the standard RRR print of the same character. What differs is the rarity slot, the full Special Art illustration, and the price. Note that the HR SA prints don’t have a public reference image in the databases we checked, so identification relies on matching the card text against the RRR version.
What is the Shadow Rider Calyrex VMAX CSR from VMAX Climax?

Where can I buy Japanese Calyrex Pokemon cards?
We ship Japanese sealed product and graded singles worldwide from Tokyo. Graded PSA10 copies of both HR Special Art VMAX cards and the VMAX Climax CSR are currently listed individually, sealed boxes for all three sets are currently listed as well, and our Quick Order page covers anything not currently listed.
