Scarlet and Violet Base Set Chase Cards: Top 10 & the Japanese SV1S / SV1V Versions

Scarlet and Violet Base Set Chase Cards: Top 10 & the Japanese SV1S / SV1V Versions

Scarlet & Violet was the English set that introduced Pokemon ex to the modern era — but every one of its headline chase cards started life as a Japanese card months earlier. The English set draws its full-art and secret rares from two Japanese releases, Scarlet ex (SV1S) and Violet ex (SV1V), both of which hit Japan on 20 January 2023, more than ten weeks before the English cards existed.

We’ve mapped the full English-to-Japanese numbering for this era already in our Scarlet & Violet Japanese card list and our broader Scarlet & Violet era guide. This article goes narrower: it ranks the ten Scarlet & Violet base-set chase cards worth knowing, shows you the exact Japanese SV1S or SV1V card each one comes from, and tells you where the artwork actually diverges between the two printings.

Key Takeaways

Scarlet & Violet (SVI, 258 cards, EN release 31 March 2023) is built from two Japanese sets — Scarlet ex (SV1S) and Violet ex (SV1V), 108 cards each, released 20 January 2023. Our highest-priced PSA 10 from either set is the Gardevoir ex SAR 101/078 at ¥55,328 (pembaruan: stok habis — minta restock via Quick Order), and the Japanese Scarlet ex booster box is currently listed at ¥11,648. Every ranking below is based on our own listings, not third-party market data.

How We Ranked These Chase Cards

We are not quoting TCGplayer, eBay, or PriceCharting numbers anywhere in this article. Instead, the ranking below uses two things we can actually verify from our own operation:

  1. Our own PSA 10 listings first, ordered by our listed price. Four of the ten cards below are cards we currently list graded PSA 10 — those sit at the top of the list, highest price first.
  2. Everything else, ordered by Japanese rarity tier. For cards not currently in our PSA 10 lineup, we ranked by the printed Japanese rarity: UR gold energy/support cards first, then SAR (Special Art Rare), then SR, then AR.

One naming note before the list: Limitless TCG’s English-language rarity labels (Illustration Rare, Special Illustration Rare, Hyper Rare) don’t appear on the Japanese cards themselves. The letters actually printed on the Japanese SV1S and SV1V cards are AR, SR, SAR, and UR — that’s what we use throughout this article and in our per-set card list pages.

The Top 10 Chase Cards

Same artwork, same illustrator credit, two different sets of numbers on the card. Here’s the full list, English number first and Japanese number second.

1. Gardevoir ex (SVI 245) — SV1S 101/078 SAR

Gardevoir ex, SAR 101/078 (pembaruan: stok habis — minta restock via Quick Order), Scarlet ex (SV1S) — illustrated by Jiro Sasumo

In Japanese this is サーナイトex, and the artist credit on the Limitless Japanese card page matches the credit on SVI 245 exactly — same illustration, same artist. This is the highest-priced PSA 10 we currently list from either SV1S or SV1V: ¥55,328 (~$348) (pembaruan: stok habis — minta restock via Quick Order).

2. Koraidon ex (SVI 247) — SV1S 103/078 SAR

Koraidon ex, SAR 103/078 (pembaruan: stok habis — minta restock via Quick Order), Scarlet ex (SV1S) — illustrated by Ryota Murayama

コライドンex, artist Ryota Murayama, matching the artist on SVI 247. Koraidon ex is the box-art legendary for Scarlet ex, and this SAR is our second-highest PSA 10 from the set: ¥17,108 (~$108) (pembaruan: stok habis — minta restock via Quick Order).

3. Katy full-art UR (SVI 237) — SV1V 097/078 SR

Katy, SR 097/078 (pembaruan: stok habis — minta restock via Quick Order), Violet ex (SV1V) — illustrated by Akira Komayama

Katy is カエデ in Japanese — one of several gym-leader trainer names that changed entirely in English localisation. Artist Akira Komayama matches SVI 237. This is our third-highest PSA 10: ¥16,006 (~$101) (pembaruan: stok habis — minta restock via Quick Order).

4. Penny (SVI 252) — SV1S 105/078 SAR

Penny SAR 105/078 Scarlet ex SV1S Japanese card by OKACHEKE
Penny, SAR 105/078 (pembaruan: stok habis — minta restock via Quick Order), Scarlet ex (SV1S) — illustrated by OKACHEKE

In Japan she’s ボタン. Artist OKACHEKE matches the credit on SVI 252. This SAR is our fourth PSA 10 from the pair of sets: ¥9,896 (~$62) (pembaruan: stok habis — minta restock via Quick Order). Note that a separate full-art UR of Penny at SVI 239 is illustrated by a different artist (“yuu”) and is a distinct print from this SAR — the two shouldn’t be confused.

5. Miraidon ex HR gold (SVI 253) — SV1V 106/078 UR

Miraidon ex UR 106/078 Violet ex SV1V Japanese card by 5ban Graphics
Miraidon ex, UR 106/078, Violet ex (SV1V) — illustrated by 5ban Graphics

9. Arven (SVI 249) — SV1V 104/078 SAR

Japanese vs English: What Changes

Ten cards, one artwork each, two completely different numbering systems. A few things worth knowing if you’re trying to match a Japanese card to its English counterpart, or vice versa:

English (SVI) Japanese (SV1S / SV1V)
Release date 31 March 2023 20 January 2023 — over 10 weeks earlier
Total cards 258 (198 + 60 secret rares) 108 each in SV1S and SV1V (base number 078)
Secret-rare numbering Sequential 199–258 across the whole set Split by rarity tier: AR 079–090, SR 091–100, SAR 101–105, UR 106–108 (both sets)
Trainer/support names Arven, Miriam, Penny, Katy, Jacq ペパー, ミモザ, ボタン, カエデ, ジニア

The card counts are why this article only covers SV1S and SV1V. Our Scarlet & Violet Japanese card list also credits a third Japanese set, Triplet Beat (SV1a), as a source for some Scarlet & Violet English cards — but SV1a’s own chase cards are numerous enough that we cover them separately in our Paldea Evolved chase-cards guide rather than folding them in here.

Every English secret rare in this set falls into one of four Limitless-labelled tiers (Illustration Rare, full-art Ultra Rare, Special Illustration Rare, Hyper Rare gold), but none of those English labels are printed on the Japanese card. What’s printed on the Japanese card is one of AR, SR, SAR, or UR — and matching those two systems card-by-card, by illustrator credit, is exactly what the table above and our Scarlet ex (SV1S) card list and Violet ex (SV1V) card list do in full.

If you’d rather pull these yourself than buy singles, sealed Scarlet ex product is the source for three of the five cards ranked highest above — Gardevoir ex, Koraidon ex SAR, and Penny are all SV1S cards, while Katy and Miraidon ex trace back to Violet ex (SV1V).

Pertanyaan yang Sering Diajukan

What are the Japanese versions of Scarlet & Violet called?

Scarlet & Violet (SVI), the English base set from 31 March 2023, draws its secret rares mainly from two Japanese sets: Scarlet ex (SV1S) and Violet ex (SV1V), both released 20 January 2023 with 108 cards each.

Which Scarlet & Violet chase card is the most expensive PSA 10 you list?

Gardevoir ex SAR 101/078 from Scarlet ex (SV1S) is the highest-priced PSA 10 we currently list from either SV1S or SV1V, at ¥55,328 (~$348). That reflects our own listing, not a third-party market value.

Why do the Japanese and English card numbers not match?

Japanese secret rares are numbered by rarity tier within each set (AR, then SR, then SAR, then UR), while English secret rares run as one continuous sequence across the whole 258-card set. The two numbering systems were never designed to line up.

Is Triplet Beat (SV1a) part of Scarlet & Violet?

Our Scarlet & Violet Japanese card list credits Triplet Beat (SV1a) as an additional source set for some Scarlet & Violet English cards, alongside Scarlet ex and Violet ex. SV1a’s own chase cards are covered separately in our Paldea Evolved chase-cards guide.

What do AR, SR, SAR, and UR mean on a Japanese Scarlet ex or Violet ex card?

These are the rarity letters actually printed on the Japanese cards: AR (Art Rare), SR (Super Rare), SAR (Special Art Rare), and UR (Ultra Rare, the gold-bordered tier). They don’t correspond one-to-one with English rarity names like Illustration Rare or Hyper Rare, even when the artwork is identical.

Where can I buy Scarlet ex or Violet ex sealed product from Japan?

We ship both the SV1S Scarlet ex and SV1V Violet ex Japanese booster boxes from Tokyo with tracked delivery, currently listed at ¥11,648 (~$73) and ¥9,880 (~$62) respectively. Individual PSA 10 singles and other requests go through our Quick Order page.
