VMAX vs VSTAR: the card mechanics in one paragraph
Per the official Pokemon Card Game product pages: Pokemon VMAX are super-powerful cards that evolve from Pokemon V. Their HP and attack damage go up a lot, giving them overwhelming power; in exchange, your opponent takes 3 Prize cards when one is Knocked Out, so timing your evolution matters. Pokemon VSTAR can “V-evolve” from a Pokemon V and carry a powerful VSTAR Power; when one is Knocked Out, your opponent takes 2 Prize cards. VSTAR Power can be used only once per game, and comes in two kinds — Abilities and attacks — with super-strong effects that can decide a battle.
Two Rarity Philosophies: CHR/CSR vs SAR/AR/UR
This is the real difference between the two sets, and it’s a design choice, not just a naming quirk.
VMAX Climax built its secret-rare tier around CHR (Character Rare) — illustrated scenes pairing a Trainer character with their Pokemon — and CSR (Character Super Rare), the VMAX/full-art escalation of the same concept. VMAX Climax has 28 CHR designs, on top of the CSR tier.
VSTAR Universe skipped the Trainer-pairing concept and went for near-total Pokemon coverage instead: SAR (Special Art Rare) covering 25 Pokemon plus 10 Supporter SARs, AR (Art Rare) covering 37 more, plus a 4-card UR tier — panoramic gold-foil cards spanning Origin Forme Dialga, Origin Forme Palkia, Giratina, and Arceus with connecting panoramic artwork.
Put the two Pikachu chase cards side by side and the philosophy gap is obvious: S8b’s CSR is a full-scene illustration built around the VMAX form, while s12a’s AR is a stylized solo-Pokemon art piece — and in s12a, that specific Pikachu is only obtainable through the god pack, not a standard pull. Neither approach is “better” by any verifiable measure; they’re just different collecting goals aimed at the same MSRP.

VSTAR Universe released December 2, 2022 as the final Sword & Shield-era high class pack, with a 262-card total (172 main + 90 secret). Community-reported per-box breakdown (not an official guarantee): 1 Pokemon SAR (of 25 possible), 1 SR (of 14), 3 AR (of 37), 1 Radiant K (of 6), 3 RRR, and 6 RR.
The god pack is s12a’s chase mechanic: two variants are documented — a 9-card Art Rare set illustrated by Kouki Saitou (where Pikachu AR #205 appears), and a 5 SAR + 5 AR mix — both as a community-reported god pack (no official rate is published).
