SM-P isn’t a set you can buy in a pack. It’s the code stamped on Japan’s Sun & Moon–era promotional cards — the ones that were never sold on a shelf, only given away as a bonus for buying something else, or for showing up somewhere in person.
That’s exactly why SM-P promos behave differently from set cards. A regular chase card gets scarcer because of pull rates inside a sealed box; an SM-P promo gets scarce because of a campaign window — a date range, a purchase requirement, sometimes a specific building. SM-P promos split into two very different tiers: pack-purchase bonuses that shipped in the thousands, and single-location giveaways that shipped in a handful of days. How SM-P Promos Were Actually Distributed
Every promo in this guide reached collectors through one of two paths, and the two paths produced very different supply levels.
The first is the pack-purchase bonus: buy a set number of packs — usually five expansion packs, sometimes a full booster box — at a Pokemon Center, Pokemon Store, or Pokemon Center Online, and a promo card (or a choice between a few) came with the purchase. Ash’s Pikachu, Red’s Pikachu, Eevee & Snorlax GX, Sapporo Pikachu, Boss Pikachu Team Plasma, and three of the five Munch Exhibition cards all worked this way, so supply tracks how popular the packs were and how long each campaign ran — not a fixed print number. Ash’s Pikachu is the exception on where: its campaign also ran through general retail chains tied to a movie-ticket promotion, not just Pokemon-branded stores.
The second is the single-event giveaway: a promo handed out at one physical location over a fixed number of days, no purchase required beyond showing up. One card in this guide used that path — the Pikachu Munch Exhibition 288/SM-P (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order), given to museum visitors over a single week — and that narrower path is why it sits well above the rest of the lineup in price.
Ash’s Pikachu 074/SM-P (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order): The Cap-Variation Series
074/SM-P belongs to the “Ash’s Pikachu GET Campaign,” which ran from June 16, 2017 — tied to advance ticket sales for the movie I Choose You!: buy five packs of any expansion in one transaction at participating retailers (Pokemon Centers and Pokemon Stores, plus general chains including AEON, Ito-Yokado, and Toys “R” Us), get one promo pack containing an Ash’s Pikachu card. What makes this particular number interesting is that it’s one entry in a running series — Ash’s Pikachu depicted wearing the different caps his in-anime companion wore across various regions. 074/SM-P is the Unova (Unova cap) version; 071/SM-P (original cap) and 086/SM-P (the “I Choose You!” movie-cap version, included in the July 2017 Ho-Oh GX Special Jumbo Card Pack) were distributed as separate cards in the same broader concept.
On the card itself: Lightning type, HP70, with the moves Quick Attack and Electro Ball, illustrated under the “2017 Pikachu Project” credit. Red’s Pikachu 270/SM-P (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order): The 20th Anniversary Full Art
Distributed starting August 25, 2018, for as long as stocks lasted, as part of the Pokemon Center “Open 20th Anniversary” promo campaign, which required five pack purchases across expansion or enhanced-expansion packs at participating Pokemon Centers (including Pokemon Center Online) and Pokemon Stores. The card itself is a full-art piece illustrated by Ken Sugimori, Lightning type, HP70, carrying the move Volt Tackle for 100 damage.

Eevee & Snorlax GX 297/SM-P: The Tag Bolt Box Bonus
This one required a bigger purchase than most: a full 30-pack booster box of Tag Bolt (SM9), on the set’s December 7, 2018 release day, to receive one copy. That box-level requirement — not a five-pack minimum — puts it in a smaller distribution bracket than most pack-purchase promos on this list.
It’s a full-art GX illustrated by Tomokazu Komiya: Colorless type, HP270, with the moves Dump Press (120+ damage) and Megaton Friends GX (210 damage plus a draw effect).
The Munch Exhibition Crossover: Two Different Giveaways
The “Munch Exhibition × Pokemon Card Game” collaboration — tied to the “Munch: A Retrospective” art exhibition — produced five promo cards, and they were not all distributed the same way. Mixing up the two paths is an easy mistake to make, so here’s the split:

Psyduck, Eevee, and Rowlet were store bonuses for buying two packs of an expansion, enhanced expansion, or high-class pack — pick one of three available options at the register. Pikachu was different: it required being physically present at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum during the exhibition’s one-week run, one card per visitor, no purchase involved. That gap in distribution mechanics is the entire reason Pikachu’s listed price runs well above its three siblings.
Four Munch Exhibition cards carry stock with us; a fifth card in the set, Mimikyu 289/SM-P (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order), is not currently in our inventory. Illustrator credits confirmed for this crossover: Psyduck by Tomokazu Komiya, Rowlet by Hideki Ishikawa, Pikachu by You Iribi. Some collectors have pointed out small nods to Munch’s The Scream tucked into the Psyduck artwork — a Gengar, a Ghost, a Sableye in the background — though we haven’t confirmed that reading against an original artist statement, so it stays a community observation rather than a fact.

Sapporo Pikachu 005/SM-P (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order): Not a Sapporo-Only Card
The name is the most misleading part of this card. “Sapporo Pikachu” commemorates Pokemon Center Sapporo’s relocation and reopening inside the Daimaru Sapporo department store, with distribution starting December 1, 2016. But the card wasn’t limited to that store — it was handed out nationwide at Pokemon Center, Pokemon Store, and Pokemon Center Online locations, to anyone who bought five packs of any expansion, for as long as stocks lasted. The name marks the occasion being celebrated, not where you had to be to get one.
Lightning type, HP60, illustrated by kawayoo. This is our oldest SM-P promo by distribution date, and among the pack-bonus cards it’s priced toward the upper end — a PSA 10 copy is currently listed at ¥307,146 (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order) (roughly $1,884).
Boss Pikachu Team Plasma 195/SM-P (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order): The Rainbow Rocket Tie-In
Released January 20, 2018 as part of the “Team Rainbow Rocket’s Ambition” campaign, this card ties into the games’ “Rainbow Rocket” storyline, where villain-team bosses from across the Pokemon series regroup under one banner. The tie-in promo let buyers choose 1 of 7 cosplay Pikachu — one per villain team, including Rocket, Aqua, Magma, Galactic, Plasma, Flare, and Skull — with a five-pack purchase, nationwide at Pokemon Centers and Pokemon Stores. 195/SM-P is the Team Plasma version, illustrated by Sanosuke Sakuma. We haven’t confirmed which specific Team Plasma character the costume is modeled on, so we’re not naming one here.
