Zacian and Zamazenta Pokemon cards launched the Sword & Shield era together in December 2019, one sword-wielding wolf per set. Six years and one Battle Partners release later, this guide covers fourteen key Japanese printings across seven sets — and two of those printings share a card name, “Zamazenta V,” while running completely different abilities.
This guide walks through fourteen key Zacian and Zamazenta printings in the Japanese TCG: the 2019 Sword V and Shield V originals, the VSTAR forms, the 25th Anniversary Collection reprints, and the VSTAR Universe Special Art Rare covered in detail below. We ship Japanese sealed product and singles out of Tokyo every week, so where we reference our own catalog, the prices below reflect what we actually have listed.
This guide covers fourteen key Zacian and Zamazenta Japanese printings across the Sword V, Shield V, 25th Anniversary Collection, VSTAR Special Set, VSTAR Universe, and Battle Partners sets. There is no Zacian V SAR in VSTAR Universe — the set’s Zamazenta chase is the PSA 10 Zamazenta V SAR [s12a 232/172], which is listed with no price at the time of this update. For sealed product from that set, our VSTAR Universe Booster Box is currently listed at ¥26,000 (~$169).
- The PSA 10 Zamazenta V SAR [s12a 232/172] is listed with no price at the time of this update; sourcing requests for that exact print go through Quick Order. Our sealed VSTAR Universe Booster Box (¥26,000, ~$169) and Shield V Booster Box (¥57,600, ~$374) are both currently listed.
- Dated market check on SNKRDUNK, September 24, 2026: the Zamazenta V SAR’s lowest ask was ¥1,400 raw / ¥8,000 PSA 10, and a sealed VSTAR Universe box’s lowest ask was ¥25,400 (no PSA 10 figure applies to a sealed box).
- For the full VSTAR Universe checklist, see our VSTAR Universe (S12a) card list.
Card facts below come from Limitless TCG’s Japanese card database. Prices are our own listed figures, current as of September 24, 2026, with dated SNKRDUNK asks noted separately for reference. USD figures convert at ¥154/USD, approximate.

Two things stand out before getting into each era. First, Zacian and Zamazenta were released as a matched pair — every Sword V print has a Shield V counterpart from the same window, right down to the RR/SR split. Second, “Zamazenta V” is not one card wearing different foils. The 2019 Shield V print and the 2022 VSTAR Universe SAR run different HP totals and different abilities, and that distinction matters more than the number on the card.
Zacian’s V-series, by contrast, stayed on one card design for its whole run — the 2019 Sword V print, its SR counterpart, and the 25th Anniversary Collection reprint all carry the same “Intrepid Sword” ability and “Brave Blade” attack. Hop’s Zacian ex, covered further down, is a separate ex-series card built around Zacian rather than another Zacian V print (Zacian VSTAR, covered below, is likewise a separate evolution stage with its own card text).
The 2019 Originals: Sword V and Shield V
Zacian V and Zamazenta V debuted together on December 6, 2019 in the paired expansion packs “Sword” (S1W) and “Shield” (S1H) — the first release of the entire Sword & Shield era.
Zacian V (S1W 046/060) is a Metal-type Basic with 220 HP, illustrated by 5ban Graphics. Its ability, “Intrepid Sword,” lets you look at the top three cards of your deck when you play it, attach a Metal Energy from among them to Zacian V, and put the other cards into your hand — but using it ends your turn. Its attack, “Brave Blade,” hits for 230 damage, with the tradeoff that Zacian V can’t attack again the following turn.
Zamazenta V (S1H 044/060) runs 230 HP, ten points higher than its counterpart, with a defensive ability instead of an aggressive one: “Dauntless Shield” prevents Zamazenta V from taking any damage from attacks used by the opponent’s Pokemon VMAX. Its attack, “Assault Tackle,” deals 130 damage and discards one Special Energy attached to the opponent’s Active Pokemon.
This is the “Dauntless Shield” Zamazenta V — 230 HP, VMAX-proof defense. It is not the same card as the VSTAR Universe SAR covered next, which runs a different ability at 220 HP. Both are legitimately called “Zamazenta V”; only the set and card number tell them apart.
Each card also has an SR (Super Rare) counterpart from the same set — Zacian V at S1W 065/060 and Zamazenta V at S1H 065/060 — carrying identical card text in a higher-rarity treatment. For a full breakdown of what else came out of these two sets, see our Sword V best cards guide and Shield V best cards guide.
The VSTAR Universe SAR Is Zamazenta V
The High Class Pack “VSTAR Universe” (s12a), released December 2, 2022, brought Zamazenta V back with an illustration by Haru Akasaka — and a different card underneath the art. This version runs 220 HP and swaps the defensive ability of the 2019 original for “Regal Stance”: once per turn, you may discard your entire hand and draw five cards, ending your turn. Its attack, “Revenge Blast,” deals 120 damage plus 30 more for every Prize card the opponent has already taken.
It’s listed with no price at the time of this update, so sourcing requests for this exact graded print go through Quick Order; the lowest asking price on SNKRDUNK on September 24, 2026 was ¥1,400 raw / ¥8,000 PSA 10. The same card also appears as a standard RR reprint at s12a 103, and turns up again in the Starter Deck 100 and VSTAR Special Set products, though we haven’t independently priced those additional printings.
VSTAR Universe pairs its Special Art Rare treatment with Zamazenta V, not Zacian V. There is no Zacian V SAR printed in s12a.

The VSTAR Forms: Zacian VSTAR and Zamazenta VSTAR
The “VSTAR Special Set” (SP6), released August 5, 2022 as a six-card promo set, gave both wolves their VSTAR evolutions.
Zacian VSTAR (SP6 004/006) steps up to 270 HP with the attack “Break Edge,” dealing 200 damage while ignoring weakness, resistance, and any effects on the opponent’s Active Pokemon. Its VSTAR Power, “Sword Star,” pushes that to 310 damage at the cost of 30 recoil, usable once per game.
Zamazenta VSTAR (SP6 006/006) also reaches 270 HP, with “Giga Impact” dealing 220 damage but locking out its next attack. Its VSTAR Power is an ability rather than an attack — “Shield Star” reduces all damage your Pokemon take from the opponent’s next attack by 100, once per game.
Both are illustrated by 5ban Graphics, keeping the artist consistent with the original Sword V print.
Later Reprints: 25th Anniversary Collection and VMAX Climax
Two more sets brought the pair back in reprint form rather than new mechanics.
| Card | Number | Rarity | Set |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zacian V | S8a 018/028 | RR | 25th Anniversary Collection |
| Zamazenta V | S8a 019/028 | RR | 25th Anniversary Collection |
| Zamazenta V | S8b 251/184 | CSR | VMAX Climax |
The 25th Anniversary Collection (S8a, October 2021) reprinted both Zacian V and Zamazenta V side by side as Double Rares, back to back in the set list at numbers 018 and 019.
The VMAX Climax set (S8b) took a different route: it reprinted only Zamazenta V, and only the “Dauntless Shield” 230 HP version from Shield V, at Character Super Rare (CSR) — the set’s signature illustrated-scene rarity tier, illustrated by Ryuta Fuse. Zacian V doesn’t appear in that set at all, which makes this the one asymmetric printing in the whole lineup.
The Modern Support Card: Hop’s Zacian ex
Zacian’s most recent Japanese printing moves it into the “supporter’s Pokemon” format that the Scarlet & Violet era uses for trainer-branded ex cards. Hop’s Zacian ex appeared in the expansion pack “Battle Partners” (SV9), released January 24, 2025, as a 230 HP Metal-type Basic.
The card carries two attacks: a bench-targeting move for 30 damage, and “Brave Slash” for 240 damage, which locks Zacian ex out of using the same attack on its following turn. It appears in three forms — the standard print (SV9 069), an SR at SV9 118 illustrated by aky CG Works, and a SAR at SV9 128 illustrated by DOM.
This is the only Zacian or Zamazenta printing tied to a specific character rather than the Pokemon standing alone, and it’s the newest card in the lineup covered here.
