Raikou in the Sun & Moon Era (SM3p, SMH, SM8, SM8b, SM12a): Pokemon Card Guide

Raikou in the Sun & Moon Era (SM3p, SMH, SM8, SM8b, SM12a): Pokemon Card Guide

Raikou card value in the Sun & Moon era is a question about five Japanese prints of ライコウ (Raikou): SM3p 033/072, SMH 035/131, SM8 037/095, SM8b 034/150 and SM12a 044/173. The official Pokémon Card Game database on pokemon-card.com lists all five as Basic Pokémon with 120 HP, and it credits three of them to Mitsuhiro Arita, one to Kagemaru Himeno and one to nagimiso.

The database does not print rarity letters, so this guide places each print by set code, number and illustrator, and it quotes prices only for products we list ourselves. We sell Japanese sealed product and graded singles from Tokyo. USD figures convert at ¥154/USD, approximate.

Key Takeaways
  • The official database holds 24 Raikou entries as of October 29, 2026. Five carry a Sun & Moon-era code: SM3p 033/072, SMH 035/131, SM8 037/095, SM8b 034/150 and SM12a 044/173.
  • Arita is credited on SM3p, SMH and SM8b, and those three share one card text. SM8 (Kagemaru Himeno) and SM12a (nagimiso) share a different one.
  • None of the five is numbered above its set count. The sealed SM8 box, currently listed at ¥110,750 (~$719), is the one product we link that belongs to a set on this list.

The Five Sun & Moon-Era Raikou Prints

All five entries below are Basic Pokémon (たね) with the Pokédex line No.243 いかずちポケモン and 120 HP, and each database text ends with a resistance of −20. The database text used here gives HP, attacks and the resistance value; this guide does not state the Energy type. The database ids are given so that a collector can search for the exact entry on pokemon-card.com.

Set code · number Illustrator Attacks as printed Database id
SM3p 033/072 Mitsuhiro Arita とどろくらいめい30 / ライトニングボール90 34029
SMH 035/131 Mitsuhiro Arita とどろくらいめい30 / ライトニングボール90 35064
SM8 037/095 Kagemaru Himeno ロストボルテージ30+ 35329
SM8b 034/150 Mitsuhiro Arita とどろくらいめい30 / ライトニングボール90 35494
SM12a 044/173 nagimiso ロストボルテージ30+ 37248

Two things stand out in the table. First, the set counts (072, 131, 095, 150, 173) are all above the printed numbers, so every one of these is a regular-numbered card and not a secret-numbered print. Second, the attack lines fall into exactly two groups, which the later sections compare.

SM8 is the only set on the list for which one of our guides gives a release date: Friday, September 7, 2018, from our legendary beasts card guide. We do not state release dates for SM3p, SMH, SM8b or SM12a because our sources do not give them.

The Arita Prints: SM3p, SMH and SM8b

Three of the five prints credit Mitsuhiro Arita, the illustrator whose career we outline in our Mitsuhiro Arita card guide. The database also credits him on Entei XY 011/171 and XY7 015/081 and on Suicune XY9 020/080, so the beast trio is a recurring subject for him. A dedicated spotlight on these three Raikou prints is in our Mitsuhiro Arita Raikou cards guide.

Raikou 033/072 SM3p, illustrated by Mitsuhiro Arita
Raikou — 033/072 — SM3p (Mitsuhiro Arita)

The SM3p print is numbered 033/072. Its two attacks, as the database prints them, are とどろくらいめい (30 damage; attach 1 Energy from your discard pile to a Benched Pokémon) and ライトニングボール (90 damage, no added effect) (rendering). With a Basic Pokémon of 120 HP and no ability, the card is short: one setup attack and one plain attack.

Raikou 035/131 SMH, illustrated by Mitsuhiro Arita
Raikou — 035/131 — SMH (Mitsuhiro Arita)

The SMH print, numbered 035/131, prints the same two attacks and the same 120 HP (rendering as above). The database credits Arita here as well. Whether the SM3p and SMH illustrations are the same artwork is not something the credit alone establishes; the two images on this page let you compare them.

Raikou 034/150 SM8b, illustrated by Mitsuhiro Arita
Raikou — 034/150 — SM8b (Mitsuhiro Arita)

The SM8b print is numbered 034/150 and again prints とどろくらいめい30 and ライトニングボール90 on 120 HP (rendering as above). Three prints with one text and one illustrator credit make this the largest group on the list, and the three set counts (072, 131, 150) help tell them apart when the cards are out of their sleeves.

Arita’s Legendary Beast Credits in the Database

Arita’s name recurs across the three beasts. The entries below are the ones the database credits to him as of October 29, 2026.

Pokémon Set code · number HP
Raikou SM3p 033/072 120
Raikou SMH 035/131 120
Raikou SM8b 034/150 120
Entei XY 011/171 (two entries), XY7-B 015/081 130
Suicune XY9-B 020/080, XYP 205/XY-P 120

The Raikou group is the only one of the three that sits in the Sun & Moon era; his Entei and Suicune credits are XY-era cards. The Entei side of that XY-era work is covered in our Entei cards guide.

SM8 037/095 by Kagemaru Himeno

The SM8 print is numbered 037/095 and is credited to Kagemaru Himeno. It is the only entry on the list with a different illustrator from the Arita group, apart from the later SM12a card, and its card text is the other family: a single attack, ロストボルテージ (Lost Voltage), for 30 damage plus 90 more if you have Energy in your Lost Zone (rendering).

Raikou 037/095 SM8, illustrated by Kagemaru Himeno
Raikou — 037/095 — SM8 (Kagemaru Himeno)

SM8 is the set behind this print, and it is the set whose sealed box we list. The product name in our catalogue is SM8-Super Explosive Impact Japanese Pokemon Booster Box. Buying a sealed box is a way to own the set the card belongs to; it says nothing about what any one box contains, and this guide gives no pull rates.

SM12a 044/173 by nagimiso

The SM12a print is numbered 044/173, the highest set count on the list, and credits nagimiso. The same artist is credited in the database on the Raikou V numbered S12a 218/172, a later print covered in our Raikou V PSA 10 guide. The two cards are different cards: the SM12a entry is a plain Raikou with 120 HP, and the S12a entry is a Raikou V with 200 HP.

Raikou 044/173 SM12a, illustrated by nagimiso
Raikou — 044/173 — SM12a (nagimiso)

The SM12a text is the second family: ロストボルテージ, 30 damage plus 90 more if you have Energy in your Lost Zone (rendering). It is identical in wording to the SM8 037/095 entry in the database, and the two cards differ in illustrator, number and set. A collector who sorts by attack name will therefore find both prints together, while a collector who sorts by illustrator will find them in different groups.

Two Card Texts, Five Prints

Sorting the five prints by what is printed on them gives two groups. The table also shows which comparisons the database can and cannot settle.

Text family Prints Illustrators What the database settles
とどろくらいめい30 + ライトニングボール90 SM3p 033/072, SMH 035/131, SM8b 034/150 Mitsuhiro Arita (all three) Same text, same HP, same credit; artwork equality is not stated
ロストボルテージ30+ SM8 037/095, SM12a 044/173 Kagemaru Himeno; nagimiso Same text and HP; different credits, so different illustrations

The second row is the clearer case: two credits mean two illustrations. The first row is the one to inspect by eye, because a shared credit does not tell us whether the artwork was reused or redrawn. Each text is rendered only for the cards named in this guide; it is not a rule for other Raikou cards.

In practice this means a collector can make three safe statements and no more. The Arita prints match each other on text, HP and credit. The SM8 and SM12a prints match each other on text and HP, and differ in credit. Every one of the five differs from the others in at least one of set code, number or set count. Anything beyond that — which print is scarcer, which one collectors prefer, which one will hold a price — is not something the official database states, and we do not state it either.

What Came Before and After in the Database

The Raikou entries around this group credit other artists and carry different texts, which is useful when you are sorting a mixed lot.

Group Prints Illustrator Text, rendered
Before XY 033/171 (two entries), XY8-Br 026/059 Shin Nagasawa Ability ひかるからだ; attack サンダーランス50+
This guide SM3p, SMH, SM8, SM8b, SM12a Arita, Himeno, nagimiso Two attack-only texts (above)
After S3a 015/076 Hideki Ishikawa アメイジングシュート120
After M1S 030/063 Takumi Wada エレキフォール30+

The S3a 015/076 card is the Amazing Rare covered in our Amazing Rare guide, and the later Mega-era prints are collected in our Raikou 162/103 guide and in the sibling checklist Raikou in the Mega Era. The Raikou V and Raikou ex cards are different cards from every Raikou in this guide, and they carry the V or ex rule box.

One practical note when sorting a mixed lot: the Pokédex line No.243 いかずちポケモン is printed on every plain Raikou entry in the database, from the LP cards (061/L-P and 064/L-P, 80 and 90 HP) and the DP3 card (DPBP#293, 80 HP) through to these 120 HP cards. It therefore does not separate one plain Raikou from another. The set code, the number and the HP do.

How to Tell Which Raikou You Hold

A Sun & Moon-era Raikou is placed by the number over the set count and by the illustrator line at the bottom of the card.

What the card shows Print it points to
033/072 SM3p, credited to Mitsuhiro Arita
035/131 SMH, credited to Mitsuhiro Arita
034/150 SM8b, credited to Mitsuhiro Arita
037/095 SM8, credited to Kagemaru Himeno
044/173 SM12a, credited to nagimiso
Name ends in V or ex A different card; see the Raikou V and Raikou ex guides linked in this article

If the number does not match any row, check the set code beside it before assuming a variant: several Raikou entries in the database share the same Pokédex line No.243, and only the set code and number separate them. For help reading the number and the symbol on a Japanese card, use the printed set count as your first check.

Raikou and the October 29, 2026 Trademark Reports

On October 29, 2026 fan sites reported a Japanese trademark filing for 「イナズマの衝撃」 (working English translation "Lightning Impact"; no official English name exists), which collectors read as a possible Raikou set; nothing is announced. Our Lightning Impact trademark article explains what is confirmed and what is not, and the wider picture is in our ex★ sets and trademarks round-up.
