What does ex mean in Pokemon? On a card it is a marker in the name, and the clearest way to see what it does is to read the card text: the Japanese ライコウex (Storm Emeralda, M6 024/076) and the older エンテイEX (Dark Rush, BW4-B 009/069) each print a rule that gives the opponent 2 Prize cards when that Pokémon is knocked out. This guide separates four things that look alike on a listing page — ex, EX, ex★ and MA — and states only what the official card database and the official announcements say about each.
The short version: ex and EX are spellings printed on different cards, ex★ is a series logo shown on August 31, 2026 with no product behind it, and MA is a rarity that has existed since MEGA Dream ex. Where the official pages we hold do not answer a question, the answer here is “not stated”. The detailed game rules are on the official rules page, pokemon-card.com/rules.
- ex and EX: two spellings, printed on different cards. The official text of ライコウex and エンテイEX each says the opponent takes 2 Prize cards when that Pokémon is knocked out. A sealed set that holds the ex print is the M6 Storm Emeralda Booster Box.
- ex★: a series logo shown at the closing ceremony of Pokémon World Championships 2026. No release date, product, price or set code is announced.
- MA: Mega Attack Rare, a rarity rather than a card type, introduced with MEGA Dream ex on Friday, November 28, 2025.
- Reading a listing name: letters after the name, such as MA or SAR in our PSA 10 listing names, describe the print; the “ex” inside the name belongs to the Pokémon.
ex in Lower Case: Raikou ex and the Starter Lines
The most direct current example is ライコウex from ストームエメラルダ (M6), whose official product page gives the release date as Friday, July 31, 2026. The official card database lists three Raikou ex prints in the set: 024/076 and 092/076, both illustrated by aky CG Works, and 108/076, illustrated by Oku. All three show HP 200, a Basic Pokémon (たね), and the same card text. Numbers above the set count, 092 and 108 here, mark the secret-numbered prints.

The card text, in English (rendering): the attack いかずちをまとう (“Clad in Lightning”) can be used even on the first player’s first turn, and searches the deck for 1 Energy, attaches it to this Pokémon and shuffles the deck. The attack パワーラッシュ200 (“Power Rush”) deals 200 damage, and if a coin flip comes up tails, this Pokémon cannot attack during your next turn. The last line is the one this article is about: 「ポケモンexがきぜつしたとき、相手はサイドを2枚とる。」 — when a Pokémon ex is knocked out, the opponent takes 2 Prize cards.
That sentence is the card-level meaning of the marker on this print. The wider prize-card rules, including the basic count of six, are on the official how-to-play page; our deck size and rules guide quotes them with their addresses.
The lower-case ex is also the marker on the Japanese starter line. スターターセットex went on sale on Friday, January 20, 2023 at an official price of ¥1,800 each. Its decks include ルカリオex and デンリュウex (HP 330) according to the official product page, pokemon-card.com/ex/sva. The marker is not new to 2023, however: our legendary beasts guide lists lower-case ex cards in the 2003–2005 EX-era sets, such as Rocket’s Entei ex and Rocket’s Suicune ex, so the spelling alone does not date a card. The set code and number do.
EX in Capitals: Entei EX and Raikou EX (BW4)
The capital-letter form appears on the BW4-B cards. エンテイEX 009/069, illustrated by shizurow, is a Basic Pokémon with HP 180. Our Entei cards guide gives its set as Dark Rush and its date as Friday, December 16, 2011. The official card text, in rendering, has two attacks (rendering): ほのおのキバ30 (“Flame Fang”) burns the opponent’s Active Pokémon, and グランドフレイム90 (“Grand Flame”) attaches an Energy from your discard pile to a Benched Pokémon. The rule line reads 「ポケモンEXがきぜつしたとき、相手はサイドを2枚とる。」 — the same effect as the lower-case line above, printed with the capital letters.

The same set holds ライコウEX 025/069, also illustrated by shizurow, HP 170. Its attack ボルテージアロー (“Voltage Arrow”) discards all Energy from the Pokémon and deals 100 damage to one of the opponent’s Pokémon without applying weakness or resistance to Benched targets, and its rule line is again the 2-Prize line for 「ポケモンEX」. Our store also lists a graded Raikou EX 1st Edition from the same set as a PSA 10 back order at ¥148,720 (~$966), sourced to order; the product page shows the current terms, and the listing name labels it SR.
One more card shows how the capital form worked as a game term. The official database lists スイクン KK 004/018, illustrated by kawayoo, with HP 100 and an ability しんぴのまもり (rendering: “Mystic Protection”) whose text says this Pokémon takes no damage or effects from the attacks of 「ポケモンEX」. A card can therefore refer to the whole group by name. This is a statement about this one Suicune and is not generalized.
What the facts we hold do not say is whether Pokémon-EX and Pokémon-ex are the same rule box or two separate ones; only the printed lines are quoted here, and for the rule-level answer the official rules page is the place to look.
ex, EX, V, GX and LEGEND Side by Side
Because the beast cards span many eras, the official database gives a tidy comparison. The table below lists one card per marker, all with the Prize line quoted from the card’s own text. The Mega ex row is included because its text differs.
| Marker | Card (official database) | HP | Prize cards the opponent takes |
|---|---|---|---|
| EX | エンテイEX BW4-B 009/069 | 180 | 2 (「ポケモンEXがきぜつしたとき」) |
| LEGEND | エンテイ&ライコウLEGEND L2-B 063/080 and 064/080 | 140 | 2 (two halves combined on the Bench) |
Yex MC 766/742 | 360 | 3 (verified text of this card) |
Each row describes one card and is not extended to the rest of its family. The point of the table is the pattern a reader can check: the suffix in the name is paired with a matching sentence in the rule box, and the count printed there is the count that applies to that card.

The V and GX cards in the table also carry their own extras. エンテイV has an ability しゅんそく (rendering: “Swift”) that draws a card once per turn while it is the Active Pokémon, and エンテイGX has a GX attack, ブレイブバーンGX (rendering: “Brave Burn GX”), with the printed limit that a player can use only one GX attack per game. Neither of these belongs to the lower-case ex card text above. For the full Entei lineup see our Entei cards guide, and for the V prints, the Entei V PSA 10 guide.
If you would like to see the ex print in a sealed product, the M6 set contains the Raikou ex prints from the first section.
A Separate Case: Suicune ex in the Classic Deck Set
Not every ex card comes from an expansion pack. According to the official Classic page, pokemon-card.com/ex/classic, スイクンex (attack クリスタルブラスト, rendering: “Crystal Blast”) is a new card in the カメックス&スイクンexデッキ of the ポケモンカードゲーム Classic deck set. Our Pokémon Card Game Classic guide describes the set as three 60-card decks at ¥35,000 tax included, sold by lottery through Pokémon Center Online in 2023, with a standalone ruleset. The card number, rarity and illustrator are not documented in that guide.

The only identifier available is our own listing name: the graded copy is offered as a PSA 10 back order at ¥8,999 (~$58) as “Suicune ex [CLK 010/032]”, sourced to order, and the product page shows the current terms. The point for this article is simple: when a listing says “ex”, check the set before assuming the rules of the expansion-pack ex cards above.
MA Is a Rarity, Not a Card Type
MA stands for メガアタックレア (Mega Attack Rare). The official MEGA Dream ex page, pokemon-card.com/ex/m2a, introduced it with the line 「新たなレアリティMA(メガアタックレア)が登場!」 — a new rarity, MA, appears. The MEGA Dream ex High Class Pack was released on Friday, November 28, 2025, and an official notice from Friday, December 5, 2025, pokemon-card.com/info/005318, lists cards in the form 「メガリザードンXex MA(メガアタックレア)」.
That notice shows the relationship clearly. In メガリザードンXex MA, the “ex” is the marker in the Pokémon’s name, and MA is the rarity of the print. A rarity describes how the print is classified; a marker describes the Pokémon card. The two sit on different axes, and both can be present on the same card.
Our PSA 10 listing names follow the same logic: the Pokémon name (with ex), then a rarity letter, then the set code and number. The table below compares how the letters sit on listings for the same Pokémon from MEGA Dream ex. The letters are the labels of our listing names; the official database carries no rarity field, and the table makes no statement about why one print is priced differently from another.
| Listing name (as our listing names it) | Currently listed |
|---|---|
| PSA10 MEGA Diancie ex MA [M2a 227/193] (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order) | ¥6,200 (~$40) (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order) |
| PSA10 MEGA Dragonite ex MA [M2a 232/193] | ¥7,500 (~$49) |
| PSA10 MEGA Dragonite ex SAR [M2a 246/193] (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order) | ¥33,702 (~$219) (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order) |
| PSA10 MEGA Gengar ex MA [M2a 230/193] | ¥11,205 (~$73) |
| PSA10 MEGA Gengar ex SAR [M2a 240/193] | ¥63,109 (~$410) |

Two details are visible in the table without any interpretation. The MA prints in the table carry the numbers 227, 230 and 232 over the 193 set count, all above the base count. And the same Pokémon, MEGA Dragonite ex or MEGA Gengar ex, has both an MA print and an SAR print in the set, each with its own number. For the set-level picture, our High Class Pack history and the M2a card list keep the record.
Rarity names are not unique to this era. Our Amazing Rare guide covers an earlier one, with nine Amazing Rare cards across the S3a and S4a sets.
ex★: What the Official Site Has Shown
ex★ (read イーエックススター) is the newest of the four terms, and its official record is short. On Monday, August 31, 2026 the official Pokémon Card Game site published the news 「「ex★(イーエックススター)」と描かれた、新シリーズのロゴが公開!」 — the logo of a new series, labelled ex★, has been revealed. The logo was shown in the Pokémon TCG video played at the closing ceremony of Pokémon World Championships 2026 in San Francisco. The news page, pokemon-card.com/info/005613, names one card, メガルカリオZex, and ends with 「今後の続報をお待ちください」 (please wait for further news).

The video itself is on the official Pokémon YouTube channel. Dengeki Online and GAME Watch reported its contents on August 31, 2026: new cards including メガルカリオZex, four MA cards, and Suicune, Entei and Raikou at the end with the ex★ logo. The official X account @Pokemon_cojp wrote the same day that viewers should note 「ライコウたち」 (Raikou and the others) who appeared alongside the logo. The post names no product.
So the official wording is “series logo”. Whether ex★ will be a set name, a card marker, a rarity or something else is not stated anywhere official; the word “series” is the only classification the official page gives. The star is not defined, and the sources we hold say nothing about mechanics for ex★ cards. Two further limits matter. The official product site carries no entry for any ex★ product as of October 29, 2026. And “ex Star” is an unofficial romanization; no English-language official announcement exists. Our ex★ announcement article covers the day the logo was shown.
One mix-up is worth heading off. The MA cards in the video do not make MA part of ex★: MA was already an official rarity, introduced with MEGA Dream ex on Friday, November 28, 2025, and the video showed four new MA cards. It did not create the rarity.

What the October 29, 2026 Reports Add
On October 29, 2026 fan sites reported Japanese trademark filings for 「マグマの鼓動」, 「イナズマの衝撃」, 「オーロラの波紋」 and 「バトルスタートデッキ」, which collectors read as possible new sets and starter decks; nothing is announced, and no official page links the names to ex★. Our Battle Start Deck article (working English translation of バトルスタートデッキ; no official English name exists) explains what is confirmed and what is not, and the round-up of the four reported names sets them against the official ex★ record.
Where to Buy ex Prints and Graded Examples
For the lower-case ex Raikou, the M6 Storm Emeralda Booster Box is currently listed as Sealed ¥8,926 (~$58) or No Shrink ¥8,853 (~$57), and the M6 card list shows the set. For the MA and SAR prints, the PSA 10 listings in the table above link to their product pages, and the M2a card list covers MEGA Dream ex.
On the older side, the Suicune ex [CLK 010/032] is offered as a PSA 10 back order at ¥8,999 (~$58) and the Raikou EX 1st Edition [BW4 071/069] at ¥148,720 (~$966); each is sourced to order, and the product page shows the current terms. The Entei V SAR 213/172 from VSTAR Universe is offered as a PSA 10 back order at ¥15,525 (~$101), on the same terms. The card list hub links every set page we keep, and for a card or set that is not listed, sourcing requests go through Quick Order.
For the starter products that carry ex cards, our companion article on deck size, the 4-copy rule and Prize cards lists them.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does ex mean on a Pokémon card?
It is a marker in the card name. On the Japanese Raikou ex 024/076 from Storm Emeralda, the official text reads that when a Pokémon ex is knocked out, the opponent takes 2 Prize cards. The full rules are on the official rules page at pokemon-card.com/rules.
Is ex the same as EX on older Pokémon cards?
They are printed differently on different cards. Entei EX 009/069 from Dark Rush (BW4-B) uses capital letters and prints the same 2-Prize line for Pokémon EX. Whether the two share one rule box is not stated in the official sources we hold, so only the printed lines are quoted.
Do V and GX cards also give up 2 Prize cards?
The official card text of Entei V 019/172 and Entei GX 011/072 each says the opponent takes 2 Prize cards when that Pokémon is knocked out. The Mega Charizard Y ex 766/742 text gives 3, so the count is read from each card.
Is MA a card type or a rarity?
A rarity. The official MEGA Dream ex page introduced MA, Mega Attack Rare, as a new rarity, and the set was released on Friday, November 28, 2025. The ex in a name like MEGA Gengar ex is a separate marker on the Pokémon.
What is ex★ and is it a product?
ex★ is a series logo shown at the closing ceremony of Pokémon World Championships 2026 and announced on August 31, 2026. No release date, product, price or set code is announced, and what the star means is not stated.
Which sealed product contains a lower-case ex Raikou?
Storm Emeralda (M6), released on Friday, July 31, 2026, holds the Raikou ex prints 024/076, 092/076 and 108/076 listed in the official card database. Our M6 booster box listing is linked in the buying section above.
