Four cards. That’s the entire SP block the first time it ever appeared, tucked inside a set called Pillars of Strength back in the game’s early days. It grew over the sets that followed and has settled at six cards in recent verified sets.
“SP CARD” isn’t slang and it isn’t a nickname collectors made up — it’s the official rarity label printed right on the game’s own cardlist, sitting alongside Common, Rare, Super Rare, and Leader. What makes the category unusual is what it does: instead of introducing a brand-new card, an SP slot takes a card that already exists from an earlier starter deck or booster and reprints it in new artwork, while keeping the card’s original number intact.
This guide traces the SP category from its OP-03 debut through the six-card block in OP-16 The Time of Battle, shows how the count has moved set to set where we’ve verified it, and lays out exactly what is and isn’t confirmed for OP-17. We source Japanese One Piece Card Game sealed product out of Tokyo, so every card here ties back to a set we can point to on the official cardlist.
SP CARD is an official cardlist rarity, not a fan term — it reprints an existing card in new artwork while keeping the card’s original number. The category debuted with four cards in OP-03 Pillars of Strength and currently runs six cards deep in OP-16 The Time of Battle. New-set SP cards ship inside sealed boosters, and our current route to them is the OP-17 The World’s Strongest Warriors booster box, currently listed at ¥28,000.
Card data is drawn directly from the official One Piece Card Game cardlist. Prices referenced for our own inventory are current listed prices in Japanese Yen as of August 2026.
What Is an SP Card in One Piece TCG?
On the official cardlist, “SP CARD” appears as its own rarity value next to a card’s type — for example, a card might be tagged SP CARD | CHARACTER. It sits in the same rarity column as Common, Rare, Super Rare, and Leader, which is what makes it an official category rather than a collector shorthand.
What separates SP from a normal new-card slot is the source material. An SP card isn’t a new character or a new stat line — it’s an existing card, originally printed in an earlier starter deck or booster set, brought back with new artwork and folded into a newer set’s cardlist under its original card number. A card released years earlier in a starter deck can resurface as an SP entry in a completely different mainline booster, still carrying the starter deck’s original code.
Look at the code, not the set. An SP card keeps the card number from whichever product it originally came from — a starter deck code like ST01-012 or a booster code like OP01-051 — even though it’s listed inside a much newer set’s official cardlist.
The First SP Cards: OP-03 Pillars of Strength
The SP category didn’t exist at launch. The official cardlist shows zero SP cards in both OP-01 Romance Dawn and OP-02 Paramount War. It debuted with OP-03 Pillars of Strength, which introduced four SP cards, all labeled “(Parallel)” on the official cardlist:
| Code | Kaart | Original Product |
|---|---|---|
| OP01-051 | Eustass “Captain” Kid (Parallel) | OP-01 Romance Dawn |
| ST01-012 | Monkey.D.Luffy (Parallel) | ST-01 Starter Deck –Straw Hat Crew– |
| ST03-009 | Donquixote Doflamingo (Parallel) | ST-03 Starter Deck –The Seven Warlords of the Sea– |
| ST04-003 | Kaido (Parallel) | ST-04 Starter Deck –Animal Kingdom Pirates– |
The ST01-012 example is a clean illustration of how the mechanism works: Monkey.D.Luffy started out as a Common in ST-01 Starter Deck –Straw Hat Crew–, one of the game’s original four launch decks. In OP-03, that exact card number resurfaced as an SP parallel — same code, new artwork, new rarity tier.
How the SP Count Has Moved Set to Set
Cross-checking the official cardlist set by set from launch through OP-07 gives a clear early trend: the category started at zero, grew once it debuted, and leveled off at six cards.
| Set | SP Cards |
|---|---|
| OP-01 Romance Dawn | 0 |
| OP-02 Paramount War | 0 |
| OP-03 Pillars of Strength | 4 |
| OP-04 Kingdoms of Intrigue | 5 |
| OP-05 Awakening of the New Era | 6 |
| OP-06 Wings of the Captain | 6 |
| OP-07 500 Years in the Future | 6 |
We didn’t re-verify every mainline set between OP-07 and OP-16 card by card for this guide, so we’re not claiming a continuous count across that gap. What we can confirm is where the block lands in the most recent set, covered next.
The Current Block: OP-16 The Time of Battle
The official cardlist for OP-16 The Time of Battle lists six SP cards, matching the OP-05–OP-07 count we verified above:
| Code | Kaart |
|---|---|
| EB04-054 | Bartholomew Kuma |
| OP10-045 | Cavendish |
| OP11-067 | Charlotte Katakuri |
| OP14-029 | Tashigi |
| OP14-084 | Ms. All Sunday |
| ST15-005 | Portgas.D.Ace |
Three of OP-16’s six SP images use “_p2” rather than “_p1” on the official image path — Cavendish, Katakuri, and Ms. All Sunday. That’s not a typo; it reflects that those original cards already had an earlier parallel version on record, so the OP-16 SP printing takes the next slot in the sequence. Nothing to read into it beyond image-file bookkeeping on the official site.
For the rest of what OP-16 has to offer beyond its SP block, our OP-16 best cards guide covers the set’s full rarity spread. We don’t hold any of these six as standing singles inventory — request a quote via our Quick Order page if you’re after one specifically.
SP Cards vs Comic Parallels vs Manga Rares
SP shares shelf space with a few other parallel-style categories on the official cardlist, and it’s easy to lump them together. The distinguishing trait of an SP card is specifically the reprint mechanism described above — an older card’s number resurfacing in a newer set’s list under a new SP-tagged printing. Comic parallels and Manga Rares are separate categories with their own rules for how they’re built and where they show up.
If you’re trying to sort out the difference in more depth, our comic parallel cards guide and manga rare cards guide both go into their respective categories card by card. And if DON!! cards are what you’re actually trying to track down, that’s a separate mechanic entirely — see our DON!! cards guide.
Is There an SP Block in OP-17? What We Know
As of this guide, the official cardlist’s set-selection dropdown does not yet include OP-17 The World’s Strongest Warriors — OP-16 is still the newest set listed there. That means we can’t verify an SP block for OP-17 the same way we verified OP-03 through OP-16 above, and we’re not going to guess at codes or a card count from pre-release spoiler chatter.
OP-17 releases in Japan on August 22, 2026. Pre-orders ship on or after August 24, and whatever SP cards (or other rarities) the set turns out to contain will be part of whatever box you pre-order — there’s no separate allocation by rarity or card.
Once OP-17 lands on the official cardlist after release, we’ll come back and confirm its SP block the same way we did for every other set in this guide.
Where to Find SP Cards
We don’t carry SP singles as standing catalog inventory — the codes covered in this guide come from starter decks and booster sets going back to 2022, and pulling an individual SP card means either opening current sealed product or sourcing a specific card to order. For the current SP block, that means OP-16 The Time of Battle boxes; for whatever OP-17 turns out to hold, that means OP-17 boxes.
For a specific SP card by code, or for older sets like OP-03 through OP-14, request a quote via our Quick Order page.
