One Pokemon. Three sets. Three completely different illustrators, and a price spread wide enough that the cheapest and most expensive copies aren’t in the same league.
Galarian Moltres has three Japanese chase prints we track, spanning three separate eras — an Art Rare from VSTAR Universe, an alt-art Secret Rare from Matchless Fighters, and a Character Super Rare from VMAX Climax. They share a name, and in two cases the exact same “V” suffix, which makes them easy to mix up if you’re going off a screenshot rather than the card number in the corner.
This guide breaks down all three prints — set, number, illustrator, and what our own PSA10 copies were last listed at — and points you to the sealed Japanese boxes each one is pulled from.
The three Japanese Galarian Moltres chase prints we track: 190/172 AR (VSTAR Universe (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order)), 078/070 SR alt-art (SA) (Matchless Fighters), and 242/184 CSR (VMAX Climax). Two of our three PSA10 singles are confirmed sold out; the 242/184 CSR has no confirmed live listing on our site. The sealed boxes behind all three prints are in stock. Card number and set code — not the “Galarian Moltres V” name, which two of the three share — are what tell these prints apart.
Prices are converted at ¥159/USD. Yen figures are our own store’s listed and last-listed prices, as an August 27, 2026 snapshot — not third-party market data.
The Three Galarian Moltres Chase Prints We Track
Three prints, spanning three different Japanese sets:
| Set | Number | Rarity | Illustrator | Our PSA10 status | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Galarian Moltres | VSTAR Universe (S12a) | 190/172 | Art Rare (AR) | Shinji Kanda | Sold out — last listed ¥8,496 (~$53) |
| Galarian Moltres V | Matchless Fighters (S5a) | 078/070 | SR alt-art (SA)* | Shibuzoh. | Sold out — last listed ¥100,818 (~$634) |
| Galarian Moltres V | VMAX Climax (S8b) | 242/184 | Character Super Rare (CSR) | Jiro Sasumo | A print we have previously handled — no confirmed live listing; reported ¥10,115 (~$64), not independently re-verified |
*Limitless catalogues 078/070 as “Secret Rare”; the wider secondary market (TCGplayer, SNKRDUNK, TCGCollector) labels the same print “SR” or “SA” (Special Art). Same card, two naming conventions — we use “SR alt-art (SA)” throughout this guide.
Two of the three share the exact name “Galarian Moltres V,” which is the main source of confusion — the 078/070 and 242/184 prints look nothing alike, come from unrelated sets, and were illustrated by different artists, but a quick web search will return both under an identical title. The 190/172 print is the odd one out on naming (just “Galarian Moltres,” no V) but is often mistaken for the other two anyway since all three trade under the same collector shorthand.
The VSTAR Universe Art Rare: 190/172

The 190/172 Art Rare is the VSTAR Universe entry, illustrated by Shinji Kanda. Our last PSA10 copy was last listed at ¥8,496 (~$53) before going out of stock — the lower of the two confirmed last-listed prices in this guide. The product page is still live (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order) for restock tracking; we do not have a current PSA10 copy in stock, and we won’t invent a restock price until one is relisted.

The regular 79/172 Double Rare print is the standard version of the same Pokemon from the same set — useful as a side-by-side if you’re trying to work out which one you’re holding. The Art Rare has full alternate artwork; the Double Rare uses the standard card frame.
For sealed product, VSTAR Universe boxes are the source set for this print. Our S12A VSTAR Universe Booster Box (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order) is currently listed at ¥31,185 (~$196) on sale (down from ¥32,760). It contains the full 262-card VSTAR Universe pool — see the complete VSTAR Universe (S12a) card list for every print in the set. We can’t verify or claim any specific pull rate for 190/172 out of a box — sealed-product odds aren’t something we publish as fact.
The Matchless Fighters Alt Art: 078/070 SA

The 078/070 SR alt-art is the most valuable of the three prints by a large margin. It’s from Matchless Fighters — set code S5a, sometimes seen translated as “Peerless Fighters” on non-Japanese retailer sites — and was illustrated by Shibuzoh. This is easy to mis-catalogue: some listings and aggregator sites attach the wrong set code to this exact card number, but the confirmed source, checked directly against the card database, is Matchless Fighters (S5a), not any other set sharing a similar naming pattern.
Our last PSA10 copy of this print was last listed at ¥100,818 (~$634) — more than ten times the 190/172 AR’s last-listed price, and roughly ten times the unverified reported CSR figure below. It is currently sold out; the product page remains live for restock requests (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order), and we’re not quoting a next-sale price until we relist one.
This is the sealed box the 078/070 SA is pulled from. As with every chase card in this guide, we don’t claim the box guarantees a pull — it’s a genuine sealed booster box from the set that print belongs to, nothing more specific than that.
The VMAX Climax Character Super Rare: 242/184

The third print is 242/184, a Character Super Rare from VMAX Climax (set code S8b), illustrated by Jiro Sasumo. On the card itself, this is a Darkness-type Basic Pokemon with 220 HP, the Ability “Ember Wing,” and the attack “Aura Burn” for 190 damage.

We do not currently have a verified live product page for a PSA10 242/184 CSR — a reported figure of ¥10,115 (~$64) circulates, but we have not independently matched it to a live listing, so treat it as reported rather than confirmed. We’re not linking a product page for this print until one is confirmed.
What we can confirm is the sealed source: our S8B VMAX Climax Booster Box is in stock, currently listed at ¥38,000 (~$239) on sale (down from ¥39,520).
How to Tell the Three Prints Apart
Because two of these three cards carry the identical name “Galarian Moltres V,” the fastest way to identify a copy is the number and set code printed at the bottom of the card, not the name in the header:
- 190/172, VSTAR Universe (S12a) — name reads “Galarian Moltres” (no V). Art Rare full-art frame, illustrator Shinji Kanda. Lowest of the two confirmed last-listed prices.
- 078/070, Matchless Fighters (S5a) — name reads “Galarian Moltres V.” SR alt-art frame, illustrator Shibuzoh. Most valuable of the three, by a wide margin.
- 242/184, VMAX Climax (S8b) — name also reads “Galarian Moltres V.” Character Super Rare frame, illustrator Jiro Sasumo. Reported price not yet independently confirmed on our end.
If you’re trying to place any of these three within their wider sets, the VSTAR Universe (S12a) card list covers all 262 cards in that set, including both the 190/172 AR and its 79/172 regular counterpart.
Where to Buy Galarian Moltres Cards from Japan
Two of the three PSA10 Galarian Moltres singles covered in this guide are currently sold out on our site; the 242/184 CSR has no confirmed live listing. We restock graded singles opportunistically as new pulls come through grading — if you want to be first in line, the sold-out product pages above accept restock interest, and our Quick Order page is the fastest way to send us a sourcing request or build a mixed order for whatever we do have available.
For sealed product, all three source sets are currently in stock and ship from Tokyo with tracked delivery:
| Sealed box | Set | Price | Stock |
|---|---|---|---|
| S12A VSTAR Universe Booster Box (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order) | Source of 190/172 AR | ¥31,185 (~$196), sale | 159 in stock |
| S5A Matchless Fighters Booster Box | Source of 078/070 SA | ¥42,000 (~$264) | 28 in stock |
| S8B VMAX Climax Booster Box | Source of 242/184 CSR | ¥38,000 (~$239), sale | 63 in stock |

None of these boxes are marketed or sold as guaranteed to contain the specific chase print named above — they’re genuine sealed product from the set each print was released in, and pull odds on any Japanese booster box aren’t something we publish as fact.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many Japanese Galarian Moltres chase prints are there?
Three, as far as we can confirm: 190/172 Art Rare (VSTAR Universe, S12a), 078/070 SR alt-art (Matchless Fighters, S5a), and 242/184 Character Super Rare (VMAX Climax, S8b).
What’s the difference between the 190/172 AR and the 078/070 SA?
They’re from different sets entirely. 190/172 is an Art Rare from VSTAR Universe illustrated by Shinji Kanda and is the more affordable of the two we can confirm — our last PSA10 copy was last listed at ¥8,496 (about $53). 078/070 is an SR alt-art from Matchless Fighters illustrated by Shibuzoh. Our last PSA10 copy of that print was last listed at ¥100,818 (about $634).
Is 078/070 a “Secret Rare” or an “SR alt-art”?
Both labels refer to the same card. Limitless catalogues it as “Secret Rare”; the wider secondary market commonly labels it “SR” or “SA” (Special Art). We use “SR alt-art (SA)” as our consistent label in this guide and cite Limitless for the base card facts.
Can I buy a Galarian Moltres PSA10 card right now?
Not directly. Our 190/172 AR and 078/070 SA singles are confirmed sold out. The 242/184 CSR is a print we have previously handled, but we have no confirmed live listing for it. The sold-out product pages accept restock interest, and our Quick Order page is the fastest way to send a sourcing request.
Does buying a sealed box guarantee pulling one of these chase prints?
No. The S12A, S5A, and S8B boxes are genuine sealed product from the sets these three prints belong to, but we don’t publish or claim specific pull rates for any single card out of a sealed Japanese booster box.
