Can You Reach Yahoo Auctions from Overseas?
Yahoo! JAPAN’s overseas-use help page shows a notice to visitors from affected regions, reading in translation that from April 6, 2022 Yahoo! JAPAN can no longer be used from the customer’s region. The page does not list which regions are affected, and it notes that a VPN or proxy connection can cause a location to be misjudged. The overseas-use help index also carries an article on regions where the services cannot be used; read that article directly for the current wording.
The help pages quoted in this guide do not state an official overseas purchase route or name a proxy partner for Yahoo! Auctions, and this guide makes no claim that Yahoo endorses any intermediary.
How Intermediary Services Describe Their Role
Buyee’s own FAQ says Buyee bids and purchases on behalf of overseas customers, that the seller ships only to Buyee’s domestic facility, and that the customer pays a purchase support fee. That is Buyee’s statement about its service, not a Yahoo statement. This guide gives no fee total for Yahoo! Auctions orders.
The Buyee Cart help page lists a ¥500 purchase fee per order, plus domestic and international shipping and special fees such as taxes at actual cost. That page is for Buyee Cart and does not say whether the same amounts apply to Yahoo! Auctions orders. Check the fee page of whichever service you use.
Bidding Rules That Matter
Yahoo! Auctions’ help page on cancelling bids says bids basically cannot be cancelled. A bidder can ask the seller through the seller-question function, and the seller decides; the page says a cancellation is not always possible. Automatic bidding cannot be turned off.
For a card that may run past your budget, the practical reading is that a bid is a commitment. Decide the ceiling before placing it, and read the card photos and description first.
Bidder Rating Restrictions and the Rating System
A seller can choose, at no charge, to restrict bidding to bidders who meet a rating level. Per the help page, the overall rating must be “New” or 0 and above, and for bidders with six or more ratings the share of negative ratings (bad or very bad) must be under 20%. The restriction applies to manual bids only.
The rating page states that ratings and replies cannot be made after 120 days from the end of the auction, that comments are public and cannot be deleted, and that comments must not contain personal information.
If a Card Arrives and Looks Counterfeit
The official page describes a procedure for Yahoo! JAPAN account holders who are the buyer of record on Yahoo Auctions. It is not addressed to overseas customers, and it does not say how it applies to a purchase made through an intermediary, where the intermediary rather than the customer is the buyer; that depends on the intermediary’s own terms.
For account holders, the page says not to press the receipt-notification button, to consult the seller about a refund or return, and to avoid leaving a rating until the refund is complete. If the matter is not resolved, funds are automatically released to the seller 15 days after payment; where a payment extension has been requested through the Yahoo! JAPAN compensation process, the period is 28 days. After that the buyer applies for compensation through the trouble procedure.
The buyer trouble index also lists cases such as a seller demanding consumption tax or a system fee, excessive shipping charges, missing or damaged items and suspected counterfeits. Trading-card prohibited-item rules and fee amounts are not covered here.
A Tokyo Shop as the Alternative Route
Ordering from a Japan-based shop is a different route from bidding at auction.
