BWR Black & White Rare Cards: Value Guide

BWR Black & White Rare Cards: Value Guide

A rarity abbreviation showed up on Japanese Pokémon cards in June 2025 that looks, at a glance, like it belongs to a set from 2011. It doesn’t. BWR is not short for the Black & White era — it’s a brand-new rarity tier, and as of the most recent trade coverage we found, only two cards carry it.

BWR stands for Black White Rare, introduced by Creatures Inc. in the paired Japanese expansions Black Bolt (SV11B) and White Flare (SV11W), both released in Japan on June 6, 2025. This guide covers what the rarity actually is, which two cards currently hold it, where it appears to sit relative to SAR, and one promo card whose name causes real confusion.

Key Takeaway

Two cards are printed at the BWR rarity in the set lists: Zekrom ex from Black Bolt and Reshiram ex from White Flare, both numbered 174/086. Our PSA 10 Reshiram ex BWR is currently listed at ¥130,604. Whether BWR outranks SAR (Special Art Rare) has not been officially confirmed — treat any ranking claim, including ours, as observation rather than fact.

What BWR Actually Is (And What It Isn’t)

BWR is short for Black White Rare. It is not related to the “Black & White” series (BW1–BW8) that ran in Japan from 2011, even though the two names share the same three letters people naturally reach for. If you see “BWR” on a card printed in 2025 or later, it refers to this new rarity, not the older era.

Trade press coverage at the time framed BWR’s introduction as the most notable Japanese rarity-system change since Creatures Inc. reintroduced the ACE SPEC card type in SV5K Wild Force and SV5M Cyber Judge. It arrived with two paired expansions, Black Bolt and White Flare, rather than a single set — a release pattern the Scarlet & Violet era has used before for split-theme boxes.

Before You Search “BWR Card”

Three different things get called “BWR” in the wild: this rarity tier, the 2011 Black & White series, and a tournament-promo name (covered below). Only the first one is the subject of this guide.

The Two Confirmed BWR Cards

As of the most recent coverage we found, exactly two cards are printed at the BWR rarity in the set lists, one per set, both at the same card number:

Zekrom ex BWR SV11B 174/086 Black Bolt

Zekrom ex BWR [SV11B 174/086], Black Bolt

Reshiram ex BWR SV11W 174/086 White Flare

Reshiram ex BWR [SV11W 174/086], White Flare

Card Set Number JP Release Status
Zekrom ex BWR Black Bolt (SV11B) 174/086 2025-06-06 Not currently in our inventory
Reshiram ex BWR White Flare (SV11W) 174/086 2025-06-06 Listed at ¥130,604

Zekrom ex anchors Black Bolt, and Reshiram ex anchors White Flare — the same legendary duo the two sets are built around, each getting the top-of-set treatment in their own box. Both sit at card number 174/086, which puts them past the numbered SAR run in each set’s print sheet.

Our PSA 10 Reshiram ex BWR is a single graded copy. When it sells, that specific cert number is gone — there’s no second one behind it in this listing.

We don’t currently carry a graded Zekrom ex BWR listing. For the full Black Bolt pull-rate and price breakdown, including Zekrom ex, see our Black Bolt (SV11B) Pull Rates & Best Cards guide.

What Makes a Card “BWR”

The name comes directly from the finish. A BWR card’s entire face — not just the border or the artwork panel, but the full card front — is treated in a single solid color, either black or white, under a holo layer. Reshiram ex, appropriately, runs white; Zekrom ex runs black. It’s a different visual approach from the alternate-art illustration style that defines SAR, or the rainbow-foil look that defined HR in earlier eras.

Because the treatment is card-wide rather than artwork-specific, a BWR card reads as a different object from across a room, not just a different frame around the same picture.

Is BWR Above SAR? What’s Actually Confirmed

This is the question we get asked most, and the honest answer is: it hasn’t been officially settled. Coverage close to the May 2025 announcement noted that BWR’s position wasn’t confirmed at the time, while floating the possibility — explicitly framed as speculation, not fact — that it could end up ranking above SAR. Nothing in the coverage we’ve reviewed upgrades that to a confirmed ranking.

For a sense of what the tier BWR is being compared against actually looks like, here’s Black Bolt’s Zekrom ex in SAR (Special Art Rare) form, a separate card from the BWR Zekrom ex shown above:

Zekrom ex SAR SV11B 169/086 Black Bolt

Zekrom ex SAR [SV11B 169/086], Black Bolt — for comparison, not a BWR card

We independently checked both BWR cards against limitlesstcg.com’s Japanese card database, which is one of the sources this guide relies on for card-level verification. Neither Reshiram ex 174/086 nor Zekrom ex 174/086 carries a distinct “BWR” tag there — both are filed under the database’s broader “Ultra Rare” label, while the 169/086 Zekrom ex above is filed as “Special Art Rare.” That’s a database classification choice, not proof of where the community-recognized BWR tier actually ranks; we’re noting it so you know what you’ll see if you look the cards up yourself.

The “BWR” Promo That Isn’t a BWR-Rarity Card

One more wrinkle worth flagging directly, because it trips people up in search results: our own inventory includes a PSA 10 Victini P [SV-P 288], titled “Victini BWR Competition Top Prize” — and the “BWR” here is connected to this guide’s rarity, just not in the way a search result might suggest.

Victini P SV-P 288 tournament promo card

Victini P [SV-P 288], SV-P Promotional Cards
Currently listed at ¥370,800 (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order)

This promo was the top prize of the Victini BWR Tournament (Japan, June 14 – August 31, 2025), an event built around Black Bolt and White Flare — and the card itself is illustrated in the BWR black-and-white style. On limitlesstcg.com, this card is catalogued with a regulation-mark reference rather than the “Ultra Rare” designation shown on the two genuine BWR-rarity cards, because as a promo it carries no BWR rarity designation of its own. If you’re specifically hunting one of the two BWR-rarity set cards, this is not that card; if you’re after a scarce tournament-prize Victini promo styled in BWR’s black-and-white treatment, it’s a legitimate, separate collectible in its own right.

Why These Two Cards Are Hard to Find

Community coverage from mid-2025 described the low circulation of the two confirmed BWR cards as a talking point in itself, with secondary-market prices moving up as collectors noticed how few copies were showing up relative to other chase slots in the same sets. We’re passing that along as a community-reported observation, not a claim we can independently verify from our own sales history.

What we can say directly: pulling either card means opening Black Bolt or White Flare product, since both BWR cards are chase pulls from their respective sets rather than standalone promos.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does BWR stand for on a Pokémon card?

Black White Rare. It’s a rarity Creatures Inc. introduced in Japan’s Black Bolt (SV11B) and White Flare (SV11W) expansions, released June 6, 2025 — not an abbreviation for the older Black & White (BW) series from 2011.

Which cards currently have the BWR rarity?

As of the most recent coverage we found, only two: Zekrom ex [SV11B 174/086] from Black Bolt and Reshiram ex [SV11W 174/086] from White Flare.

Is BWR the same thing as the 2011 Black & White series?

No. They share three letters and nothing else. BWR is a 2025 rarity tier; the Black & White series (BW1–BW8) is a set era from 2011–2013.

Is BWR a higher rarity than SAR?

This hasn’t been officially confirmed. Early coverage floated the possibility as speculation, not a settled ranking, and we haven’t found a source that upgrades that to fact.

Is the “Victini BWR Competition” promo card part of the BWR rarity?

No. The “BWR” in that promo’s title comes from the Victini BWR Tournament, an event built around Black Bolt and White Flare, and the card is illustrated in the BWR black-and-white style — but as a promo it carries no BWR rarity designation and isn’t one of the two BWR-rarity cards in the set lists.
