Search “Mega Absol ex” and it is easy to land on the wrong Japanese set. The card comes from the expansion pack Mega Brave, set code M1L — not its same-day companion release Mega Symphonia (M1S). The two sets launched together on 1 August 2025, and that shared release date is exactly why listings and searches for one keep surfacing the other.
This guide sets the anchor straight, walks through all three confirmed Japanese prints of Mega Absol ex, and clears up a second, older mix-up along the way: there is a vintage Pokemon card called M Absol EX from the XY era, and despite the near-identical name it is not the same card as 2025’s Mega Absol ex.
For the wider Absol card family — older Darkness-type prints, the AR lineage, and the Ruler of the Black Flame print — our Absol Pokemon card guide is the hub to read. This piece goes deep on the single M1L chase card and the two things people most often confuse it with.
Mega Absol ex is a Darkness-type Basic Pokemon from the Japanese expansion pack Mega Brave (set code M1L, released 1 August 2025) — not Mega Symphonia (M1S), its same-day companion set. The three M1L prints verified here are a Double Rare at #38/63, a Secret Rare at #79/63, and a Special Art Rare (SAR) at #89/63. The sealed M1L Mega Brave booster box is currently listed at ¥9,025 (~$57); the companion M1S Mega Symphonia box is listed separately at ¥7,600 (~$48).

The Card: Mega Absol ex
Mega Absol ex (メガアブソルex) is a Darkness-type Basic Pokemon with 280 HP, weak to Grass, and a retreat cost of 2. It carries two attacks: DC デスピリオド (Death Period), which knocks out the opponent’s Active Pokemon outright if that Pokemon already has exactly 6 damage counters on it, and DDC あくのかぎつめ (Dark Claw), which deals 200 damage and forces the opponent to discard one card from their hand.

The Double Rare (#38/63) and Secret Rare (#79/63) are illustrated by aky CG Works; the Special Art Rare (#89/63) carries separate artwork by Mitsuhiro Arita. All three sit in the Japanese expansion pack Mega Brave, which released 1 August 2025.
No Mega Absol ex single, graded or raw, is currently listed on our site — sourcing requests for a specific print go through Quick Order. The sealed M1L Mega Brave booster box is where all three prints are pulled from.
Print History: Three Prints Across Mega Brave (M1L)
All three confirmed Japanese prints of Mega Absol ex sit inside the same set, released the same day — there is no earlier or later Japanese release to track, and no first-edition-versus-reprint story here.
| Set | Number | Rarity | JP Release |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mega Brave (M1L) | 038/063 | Double Rare (RR) | 1 Aug 2025 |
| Mega Brave (M1L) | 079/063 | Secret Rare | 1 Aug 2025 |
| Mega Brave (M1L) | 089/063 | Special Art Rare (SAR) | 1 Aug 2025 |
The Double Rare sits inside the set’s 63-card main numbering, the standard non-secret treatment for an “ex” card in this generation of Japanese sets. The Secret Rare and the Special Art Rare both sit in secret slots above the main count, with the SAR carrying the set’s separate alternate-art treatment.
The Set: Mega Brave (M1L)
Mega Brave (拇張パック「メガブレイブ「) is Japanese set code M1L, with a 63-card main set plus secret-numbered cards. It released 1 August 2025 as part of the first wave of the MEGA Series — the wave that introduced the Mega Evolution ex mechanic to the Japanese TCG.

Sealed M1L product is currently listed at ¥9,025 (~$57), with a Damaged Box variant at ¥9,880 and a No Shrink Damaged Box at ¥9,120 for buyers who do not need factory shrink-wrap. For the set’s full checklist, see our Mega Brave (M1L) card list, and for a buying-focused breakdown of the box itself, our Mega Brave booster box buying guide.
Not Mega Symphonia (M1S): Two Same-Day Companion Sets
Mega Brave (M1L) and Mega Symphonia (M1S) released on the same day, 1 August 2025, as the two halves of the MEGA Series’ opening wave — both with 63-card main sets and secret-numbered cards, and both built around the same Mega Evolution ex mechanic. That shared release date makes the two sets easy to mix up when comparing cards and boxes.
Mega Absol ex is an M1L card. It does not appear anywhere in M1S’s checklist.

M1L is Mega Brave, where Mega Absol ex lives. M1S is Mega Symphonia, a separate box released the same day. Same wave, different checklists.
M1S is a legitimate box in its own right — currently listed at ¥7,600 (~$48), with its own Pokemon Center Set at ¥19,950 — it is simply not where Mega Absol ex comes from. For a side-by-side of what each box actually contains, our Mega Brave vs Mega Symphonia box guide covers both checklists in full.
Vintage M Absol EX vs Modern Mega Absol ex
There is an older Pokemon card that shares almost the same name: M Absol EX (アブソルEX), a promo card from the XY Promotional Cards (XYP) series, printed during the 2014-era EX mechanic — more than a decade before Mega Brave. It is a different card in every respect that matters: 210 HP against the 2025 card’s 280, illustrated by 5ban Graphics rather than aky CG Works or Mitsuhiro Arita, and built on the older “EX” mechanic rather than the “ex” mechanic the MEGA Series uses. Its English equivalent is XY Promos #63.

Beyond the shared “Absol” name and Darkness typing, the two cards have no connection — no reprint relationship, no shared artwork, and more than a decade between them. If you are trying to identify which one is in front of you, HP is the fastest check: 210 is the vintage EX, 280 is the modern ex.
Where These Prints Sit Among Japanese Rarity Tiers
Within Mega Brave, the three Mega Absol ex prints verified here sit on three different rungs of the set’s rarity structure: the regular numbered Double Rare at #38/63, a Secret Rare at #79/63, and the Special Art Rare at #89/63 — a secret-slot alternate-art treatment carrying separate artwork by Mitsuhiro Arita.
