Professor’s Research (Professor Oak) 003/028: 25th Anniversary Card Guide

Professor’s Research (Professor Oak) 003/028: 25th Anniversary Card Guide

25th ANNIVERSARY COLLECTION (S8a) released in Japan on Friday, October 22, 2021. Card three of the set’s 28 is a Supporter: discard your entire hand and draw seven. That card is Professor’s Research (Professor Oak), 003/028, illustrated by KIYOTAKA OSHIYAMA.

This guide covers the card’s effect exactly as the official card database prints it, where 003/028 sits among the set’s 28 cards, the illustrator’s other credit in the anniversary line-up, and what our store currently shows for the S8a box this card comes from.

Card Snapshot

Professor’s Research (Professor Oak) 003/028 is a Supporter Trainer card from 25th ANNIVERSARY COLLECTION (S8a): discard your entire hand and draw 7 cards, with the standard one-Supporter-per-turn restriction. The official card database also carries a Secret Rare print of the same effect, 029/028, illustrated by Ken Sugimori rather than KIYOTAKA OSHIYAMA. Our S8A 25th Anniversary Collection Booster Box is currently listed at ¥67,200 (~$436) (September 17, 2026).

What Is Professor’s Research (Professor Oak) 003/028?

Professor’s Research (Professor Oak) 003/028 is a Trainer card in the Supporter subcategory, credited in the official card database to illustrator KIYOTAKA OSHIYAMA. It carries no HP, type or attack, and its own text limits a player to one Supporter card per turn.

The set’s product page lists this card under the expansion pack 拡張パック「25th ANNIVERSARY COLLECTION」, and the official card database’s detail page for 003/028 shows only the S8a expansion logo — there is no G/H/I regulation-mark letter printed anywhere on that page.

The Card Effect: Discard and Draw 7

Quoted verbatim from the official card database, the Supporter text reads:

自分の手札をすべてトラッシュし、山札を7枚引く。
サポートは、自分の番に1枚しか使えない。

Our rendering: Discard your entire hand and draw 7 cards. You may play only 1 Supporter card during your turn.

There is no coin flip, no condition and no alternate cost — the entire hand goes to the discard pile and is replaced with seven fresh cards. Because the effect touches every card in hand, including any other Trainer or Energy a player might have been holding, it functions as both a reset and a card-advantage tool depending on when it is played. A hand of one or two cards turns into seven; a hand already holding several useful cards is traded away entirely, so the timing of the discard matters as much as the draw itself.

The card’s own text is the only rules text printed on it — there’s no Ability, no attack and no Weakness/Resistance/Retreat line, since none of those apply to a Trainer card.

The official card database prints no per-card mirror or holo note for 003/028, or for any other S8a card. The only official finish statement for the set is on the product page itself: 「カードはすべてキラカード」 — every card in the set is printed as a holo card. That set-wide statement is the extent of what is officially confirmed about this card’s finish; the “Mirror” naming used elsewhere for specific S8a cards is not something the database applies here.

Where 003/028 Sits Among the 28

The official card database’s S8a enumeration runs 001/028 through 025/028 — 25 numbered cards — plus eight basic Energy cards that carry no printed number. Professor’s Research (Professor Oak) sits at 003/028, right after the set’s two Basic Pokémon leads: Pikachu at 001/028 and Mew at 002/028.

Our own guides cover both of those opening cards individually — see our Pikachu 001/028 guide and our Mew 002/028 guide. Professor’s Research is the set’s only Trainer card among the 25 numbered entries; every other numbered slot is a Pokémon. Our own S8a booster box guide discusses a secret-rare Professor’s Research as the set’s chase card, and that print does have an official database page: it’s numbered 029/028, carries the SR rarity icon, and is illustrated by Ken Sugimori rather than the regular print’s KIYOTAKA OSHIYAMA. Its Supporter text is the same effect quoted above — discard your entire hand and draw 7 cards — word for word.

Professor’s Research appears a third time in the 25th-anniversary line, outside S8a itself: the 25th ANNIVERSARY GOLDEN BOX deck carries 博士の研究(マグノリア博士), Professor’s Research (Professor Magnolia), at 012/015 in the database’s S8a-G block, illustrated by Yusuke Ohmura and printed with the same Supporter text — discard your entire hand and draw 7 cards. Three prints, three illustrators, one effect.

No PSA 10 single of either the regular 003/028 print or the 029/028 SR is listed on our site at the moment; sourcing requests for either go through Quick Order. The official product page states the pack itself contains five holo cards, one of which is always a basic Energy card, drawn at random from the 28 kinds in the set; it does not state how many packs make up a booster box.

Illustrator: KIYOTAKA OSHIYAMA

003/028 is credited on its official detail page to KIYOTAKA OSHIYAMA. The same illustrator credit appears again in the Pokémon Company’s newest anniversary set: our Pikachu 042/103 guide covers the illustrator’s card in 30th CELEBRATION (M6a), the 2026 anniversary set, released September 16, 2026.

Beyond the credit line on the detail page itself, the official card database gives no further biographical detail for any S8a illustrator. The set’s Secret Rare 029/028 print of this same card carries a different credit, Ken Sugimori, so the two prints of Professor’s Research (Professor Oak) in S8a are not only different rarities but different artwork by different illustrators — the database does not describe either piece of artwork beyond the illustrator name.

Where to Buy

Neither the regular 003/028 print nor the 029/028 SR is listed on our site as a single at the moment; requests for either go through Quick Order. Sealed is what we carry from this set: our S8A 25th Anniversary Collection Booster Box is currently listed at ¥67,200 (~$436) (September 17, 2026).

Three collection pages carry the rest of this era: the PSA 10 collection for graded 25th Anniversary singles while they are listed, the sealed booster box collection for Japanese boxes beyond S8A, and the broader Japanese Pokémon card collection. Our S8A pull rates and best cards guide places the two Professor’s Research prints against the rest of the checklist.
