Radiant Pokemon Cards: Japanese Value Guide

Radiant Pokemon Cards: Japanese Value Guide

Open a pack from Battle Region and pull a card with a pixel-crosshatch holofoil finish and a single letter — K — printed where the rarity symbol usually sits. That’s a Radiant Pokemon, and it’s one of the more misunderstood rarity tags in the modern Japanese Pokemon TCG. It isn’t a full-art chase like SA or SAR, it isn’t a Hyper Rare HR, and it isn’t a shiny-styled SSR — it’s its own category, with its own deck-building rule attached. So what does Radiant mean in Pokemon, exactly? This guide walks through that, and what it doesn’t mean.

This guide covers what “Radiant” actually means on a Japanese card, how to spot the K symbol, where the rarity started, and the one deck-building rule every Radiant card carries. We ship graded and sealed Japanese Pokemon product out of Tokyo. Our PSA 10 Radiant Charizard and Radiant Eevee singles are both sold out as graded listings at the time of this update, but each is available instead as a PSA 10 back order.

USD figures convert at ¥154/USD, approximate.

What Does Radiant Mean in Pokemon? The K Symbol Explained

The English name is Radiant Pokemon. On the actual Japanese card, the text reads “かがやくポケモン” — Kagayaku Pokemon, literally “shining Pokemon.” Structurally, Radiant Pokemon are treated as a sub-group within the broader Shiny Pokemon family rather than a standalone mechanic invented from scratch.

That relationship is also why the rarity is easy to confuse with other Japanese “shiny” or “special” tags. A Radiant card is not an SA (Special Art) full-art print, not an SAR (Special Art Rare), not an HR (Hyper Rare), and not an SSR (Shiny Super Rare) — all of which are separate classification systems built around illustration style and foil treatment rather than the Radiant sub-group’s card-effect design. We break down how those other tags differ in our Japanese Pokemon card rarities guide, and we cover the “what it’s not” distinction again later in this article.

The K Symbol: How to Spot a Radiant Card

On Japanese-language cards, the rarity mark printed in the card’s rarity slot for a Radiant Pokemon is a single letter: K, taken from “Kagayaku.” It’s the fastest way to confirm you’re holding a genuine Radiant print rather than a regular or alternate-art version of the same Pokemon.

Radiant Charizard K K

Radiant Eevee K, 055/071, Radiant Rare, Pokemon GO (S10b)

Radiant Eevee K K
S10b Pokemon GO, 055/071

Card databases don’t always keep a dedicated “K” tag internally. Looking up these two prints on limitlesstcg.com’s card index, both are catalogued under the broader label “Radiant Rare” rather than a separate K-specific field — useful context if you’re cross-referencing a card by its database entry rather than the physical print.

Not the Same Three Letters

“BWR” is a different, newer rarity (Black White Rare, introduced 2025) with no connection to Radiant. If you see “K” specifically, you’re looking at a Radiant Pokemon.

Where Radiant Began: Battle Region (S9a)

Radiant Pokemon debuted in the Japanese expansion Battle Region (S9a), released in Japan on February 25, 2022. The English-language equivalent set is Astral Radiance. Battle Region introduced three Radiant Pokemon cards at launch: Radiant Heatran, Radiant Greninja, and Radiant Hawlucha.

Radiant Charizard and Radiant Eevee — the two cards this guide covers in PSA 10 — came later, in separate sets. Radiant Charizard appeared in VSTAR Universe (S12a), a high-class pack we’ve covered in detail in our S12a VSTAR Universe pull rates and best cards guide (see also the S12a VSTAR Universe card list). Radiant Eevee appeared in the enhanced expansion Pokemon GO (S10b), which we cover separately in our S10b Pokemon GO pull rates and best cards guide (see also the S10b Pokemon GO card list). Both of those articles go deeper into pack structure and the rest of each set’s chase list; this guide stays focused on what the Radiant rarity itself means across all of them.

The One-Copy Deck Rule

Radiant Pokemon come with a deck-building restriction that regular Pokemon don’t have: a player may include just one Radiant Pokemon card in their deck at a time, regardless of how many different Radiant cards they own. A non-Radiant version of the same species — a regular Charizard or Eevee, for example — is not affected by this limit and can still be run at normal deck-building counts alongside it.

There’s a second quirk tied to the rarity: every Radiant Pokemon is treated as a Basic Pokemon for gameplay purposes, even when the species it depicts would normally be a Stage 1 or Stage 2 evolution. That’s part of why Radiant cards tend to slot into decks as a single, powerful utility piece rather than as the centerpiece of an evolution line.

Two Radiant PSA 10 Back Orders

Both Radiant Charizard and Radiant Eevee are sold out as graded listings at the time of this update; each is offered instead as a PSA 10 back order, sourced to order, with the product page showing the current terms.

Card Set Card number Rarity Status (September 24, 2026)
Radiant Charizard K VSTAR Universe (S12a) 015/172 K Sold out — back order ¥7,032 (~$46)
Radiant Eevee K Pokemon GO (S10b) 055/071 K Sold out — back order ¥9,690 (~$63)

Both are single graded prints once sourced — not a running stock count — so the next Radiant Charizard or Radiant Eevee we source may carry a different grade, cert number, or price. The lowest asking price on SNKRDUNK on September 24, 2026 was ¥7,800 for a PSA 10 Radiant Charizard K and ¥9,249 for a PSA 10 Radiant Eevee K, for reference against our own back-order prices above.

What Radiant Is Not

Because Japanese rarity tags overlap in look and language, it’s worth being explicit about the boundaries:

  • Not SA / SAR. Special Art and Special Art Rare are full-art illustration tiers defined by artwork treatment, not by the Shiny-Pokemon sub-group Radiant belongs to.
  • Not HR. Hyper Rare is a foil-finish tier from the Sun & Moon through Sword & Shield eras, unrelated to the K symbol.
  • Not SSR. Shiny Super Rare cards use an SR-style illustration in a shiny colorway; Radiant cards use their own pixel-crosshatch holofoil treatment and a distinct deck-building rule instead.
  • Not BWR. Black White Rare is a separate, newer rarity introduced in 2025 — three letters that are easy to mix up with “K” cards at a glance, but a completely different system.

Our full Japanese Pokemon card rarities guide walks through how all of these tags relate to each other if you want the wider picture beyond Radiant specifically.

Is Radiant Still Standard-Legal?

No — Radiant Pokemon cards, including the K-symbol prints covered here, are no longer usable in the current Standard tournament format. Rotation has moved the era that introduced them out of legal play. That doesn’t affect their status as collectible prints; it just means they’re a binder and display piece rather than a tournament-deck option in the current format.

Where to Buy Radiant Pokemon Cards from Japan

We ship graded and sealed Japanese Pokemon product worldwide from Tokyo. Our current Radiant lineup is small and PSA-graded, and both singles are sold out at the time of this update; the current terms are on each back-order page:

For the sealed booster boxes behind each of these two chase cards, our set-specific guides — S12a VSTAR Universe and S10b Pokemon GO — cover box structure and the full best-card list from each set.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does “Radiant” mean on a Japanese Pokemon card?

Radiant Pokemon (Kagayaku Pokemon in Japanese) is a Shiny Pokemon sub-group marked with a “K” rarity symbol on Japanese-language cards. It debuted in Battle Region (S9a) on February 25, 2022.

What is the K symbol on Japanese Pokemon cards?

K stands for “Kagayaku” (shining), the Japanese term for Radiant Pokemon. It appears in the rarity slot on the card in place of a standard rarity symbol.

How many Radiant Pokemon cards can I play in one deck?

Just one. Radiant Pokemon are limited to a single copy per deck regardless of how many different Radiant cards a player owns. A non-Radiant version of the same species is not affected by this limit. All Radiant Pokemon also count as Basic Pokemon for deck-building purposes.

Can I still play Radiant Pokemon cards in the current Standard format?

No. Radiant Pokemon cards are no longer usable in the current Standard tournament format, though they remain fully valid as collectible and display cards.

Is Radiant Charizard the same card as other Charizard rarities like SAR or ex?

No. Radiant Charizard is its own K-symbol print from VSTAR Universe (S12a), separate from full-art SA/SAR prints or ex-line cards of the same species, which belong to entirely different rarity systems.

Are PSA 10 Radiant Charizard and Radiant Eevee currently available from you?

Not as graded listings at the time of this update — both are sold out. Each is offered instead as a PSA 10 back order, sourced to order; see our PSA 10 back order page for how that process works.
