“Start Deck 100” is a simple idea: instead of a booster pack, you buy a sealed, pre-built 60-card deck — but you don’t know which of 100 possible deck numbers you’re getting until you open the box. Japan has run this format twice.

Each release randomizes across 100 numbered decks, so two buyers opening the same box design can walk away with completely different Pokemon. The chase value sits in a handful of secret, high-number cards layered on top of the regular checklist — covered set by set below.
The Original: Sword & Shield Start Deck 100 (2021)
The 2021 “Pokemon Card Game Sword & Shield Start Deck 100” launched at a ¥790 price point, well below a standard booster box, and used set code SI with a card denominator of /414. Each box contains one full 60-card constructed deck, randomly assigned from 100 possible deck numbers (001–100), plus a damage counter/marker sheet.
Every one of the 100 decks includes the same Supporter card, “Jun,” giving the product a shared baseline regardless of which deck you pull.
The real reason collectors still track this release is its secret-card tier. Beyond the standard checklist ending at /414, SI carries a run of over-numbered secret cards (415 and up) with upgraded finishes — including Pikachu V (SI 415/414) and Zamazenta V (SI 417/414). These are the cards that turned an inexpensive sealed product into something worth opening in bulk in 2021 and 2022.
Anything numbered above 414 on an SI-coded card is outside the regular 100-deck checklist and one of the upgraded secret pulls — that’s the number to check first.
The MEGA Reboot: Battle Collection (2025)
Four years later, the format returned as “Pokemon Card Game MEGA Start Deck 100 Battle Collection” under set code MC, priced at ¥891 and built around the MEGA era’s ex Pokemon. The mechanic is identical — a sealed, randomized 60-card deck plus a damage counter/marker sheet — but every one of the 100 decks now includes at least two ex Pokemon, and the shared cards across all decks are Poke Pad and Lillie’s Determination.
The card denominator on MC is /742, reflecting the set’s full checklist as printed on the cards themselves. On top of the 100 numbered decks, MC adds two secret pulls — a secret deck 101 and a gold-foil variant of deck 001 — bringing the total to 102 possible deck pulls across numbers 001–100 plus the two secrets.
Deck 001 is the Grass-type build, and it’s a useful example of how these decks are constructed: it’s centered on Erika’s Oddish, which evolves into Erika’s Gloom and then Erika’s Vileplume ex, for a full 60-card list. The gold-foil secret variant of this same deck swaps in a gold-etched MEGA Charizard Y ex (MC 085/742), whose attack “Prism Burst Y” hits for 280 damage.

The reason Battle Collection decks are worth opening in volume — rather than treated as a single fixed 60-card product — is the alternate-finish layer stacked on top of the base checklist:

- AR Style — a full-illustration alternate treatment, confirmed on cards such as Banette (MC 749/742).
