Unbroken Bonds Chase Cards: The Japanese Double Blaze (SM10) Prints Behind Them

Sun & Moon—Unbroken Bonds released in English on 3 May 2019 with 234 cards, but none of its TAG TEAM GX chase cards were designed there first. Every one of them started life months earlier in Japan, spread across three separate sets — and the set’s headline card, Reshiram & Charizard-GX, was printed in Japan across three distinct rarity tiers of the same card.

This guide maps nine Japanese prints to the Unbroken Bonds TAG TEAM GX cards they actually came from — SM9a Night Unison, SM9b Full Metal Force and SM10 Double Blaze — and shows which of those Japanese prints we currently list as PSA 10 graded singles. For the full Japanese card-by-card breakdown, see our Unbroken Bonds Japanese card list.

Key Takeaways

Unbroken Bonds draws its GX chase cards from three Japanese sets — SM9a Night Unison, SM9b Full Metal Force and SM10 Double Blaze. The set’s headline card, Reshiram & Charizard-GX, appears in Japan across three explicit tiers on SM10 Double Blaze; our highest-priced graded single from that trio is the PSA 10 Reshiram & Charizard GX SR:SA [SM10 097/095] currently listed at ¥438,960 (~$2,761). See our Unbroken Bonds Japanese card list for every card in all three source sets.

Which Japanese Sets Unbroken Bonds Was Built From

Unbroken Bonds is a compilation set. Rather than translating one Japanese release card-for-card, Pokemon assembled its 234 English cards from three Japanese sets that released in quick succession over about seven weeks in early 2019:

EN set JP set code JP name JP release JP size
Unbroken Bonds SM9a Night Unison 11 Jan 2019 63
Unbroken Bonds SM9b Full Metal Force (also translated as Full Metal Wall) 1 Feb 2019 62
Unbroken Bonds SM10 Double Blaze 1 Mar 2019 107

Between them, these three sets total 232 catalogued cards against Unbroken Bonds’ 234 — close enough that the English set reads as a near-complete merge of the three, though it renumbers everything into one continuous English-only sequence. Our own site’s existing Japanese card-list hub already groups these three under the same “SM9a, SM9b, SM10” heading used for this bridge.

Of the three, SM10 Double Blaze is where most of Unbroken Bonds’ best-known chase cards land, including the set’s headline TAG TEAM GX. The sections below work through each mapped card.

Unbroken Bonds Chase Cards and Their Japanese Prints

Nine Japanese prints map to Unbroken Bonds TAG TEAM GX cards across the three source sets. One of the underlying cards — Reshiram & Charizard-GX — maps to three separate Japanese prints, which is the most notable pattern in this set.

1–3. Reshiram & Charizard-GX — EN #20 Double Rare → SM10 Double Blaze, three tiers

English Unbroken Bonds prints Reshiram & Charizard-GX once, as a Double Rare at #20. Japan’s SM10 Double Blaze prints the same card three times, at three explicit rarity tiers: SR at #096/095, SR:SA (Secret Rare Special Art) at #097/095, and HR (Hyper Rare) at #108/095. No other card in this mapping repeats that three-tier split.

Reshiram and Charizard GX, SM10 Double Blaze #108/095, Hyper Rare, PSA 10 slab

Reshiram & Charizard GX HR — SM10 #108/095

All three prints are currently listed as graded PSA 10 singles: the SR at ¥63,437 (~$399), the SR:SA at ¥438,960 (~$2,761), and the HR at ¥74,057 (~$466). The SR:SA sits well above the other two, reflecting its position as the special-art tier between the standard SR and the top-tier HR.

4. Marshadow & Machamp-GX — EN #82 Double Rare → SM10 Double Blaze #101/095 (SR:SA)

Marshadow and Kairiky GX, SM10 Double Blaze #101/095, SR Special Art, PSA 10 slab

The English Marshadow & Machamp-GX at #82 corresponds to Japan’s Marshadow & Kairiky-GX — the Japanese name for the same partner Pokemon, Machamp being localised as Kairiky in Japan — printed as an SR:SA at SM10 #101/095. It is currently listed as a PSA 10 single at ¥43,660 (~$275).

5. Pheromosa & Buzzwole-GX — EN #1 Double Rare → SM9b Full Metal Force #56

Unbroken Bonds opens its numbering with Pheromosa & Buzzwole-GX at #1, and its Japanese print sits in SM9b Full Metal Force at #56 — the same set our site’s card-list article also covers under the alternate translation “Full Metal Wall.” It is currently listed as a PSA 10 single at ¥115,640 (~$727).

6. Muk & Alolan Muk-GX — EN #61 Double Rare → SM10 Double Blaze #99

8. Lucario & Melmetal-GX — EN #120 Double Rare → SM9b Full Metal Force #59

Lucario & Melmetal-GX at EN #120 maps to SM9b Full Metal Force #59. It is currently listed as a PSA 10 single at ¥68,440 (~$430).

Rarity Names: English vs Japanese

English Unbroken Bonds gives every TAG TEAM GX in this mapping the same rarity label — Double Rare — regardless of how the card is treated in Japan. Japan’s Double Blaze is more granular for at least one card: Reshiram & Charizard-GX is split into three explicit tiers within the same set — SR (Secret Rare), SR:SA (Secret Rare Special Art) and HR (Hyper Rare) — each a separate print with its own number.

The other six cards in this mapping each correspond to a single Japanese print in their respective source set; beyond Marshadow & Machamp-GX’s confirmed SR:SA, the specific rarity tier for the remaining five prints isn’t verified here. We can’t generalise this three-tier pattern beyond Reshiram & Charizard-GX from what’s verified here; it’s a feature of that specific card in Double Blaze rather than a rule that applies across every Unbroken Bonds TAG TEAM GX.

Reading a Double Blaze Number

SM10 Double Blaze numbers its SR, SR:SA and HR prints above the set’s main run — #096, #097 and #108 all sit above the “/095” denominator used on the card. If your Japanese card shows a number higher than 95 out of “095,” you’re holding one of the set’s rare-tier prints rather than a main-set card.

Japanese vs English Version: What Changes

Beyond the artwork, three things separate the Japanese prints from their English Unbroken Bonds counterparts. First, distribution: instead of one 234-card English set, the same pool of cards was split across three Japanese sets released between 11 January and 1 March 2019, each with its own release date, set code and cover cards.

Second, numbering: a Japanese card keeps its own set code and printed number for life — “SM10 097/095” or “SM9a 059/063” — while Unbroken Bonds renumbers every card into a single English-only sequence starting at 1. The same illustration can therefore carry two completely different numbers depending on which release you’re holding.

Third, naming: SM9b appears in different sources under two English romanisations of its Japanese title — “Full Metal Force” and “Full Metal Wall.” These refer to the same set code and the same cards; it isn’t a case of two different Japanese sets sharing similar names. Our own Full Metal Wall (SM9b) card list and the Limitless database’s “Full Metal Force” both catalogue the identical SM9b release.

For the individual set breakdowns, see our Night Unison (SM9a) card list, our Full Metal Wall (SM9b) card list and our Double Blaze (SM10) card list.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Japanese sets do the Unbroken Bonds chase cards come from?

Three: SM9a Night Unison (11 Jan 2019, 63 cards), SM9b Full Metal Force (1 Feb 2019, 62 cards) and SM10 Double Blaze (1 Mar 2019, 107 cards).

Why does Reshiram & Charizard-GX have three different Japanese rarities?

Japan’s SM10 Double Blaze prints the English #20 Double Rare Reshiram & Charizard-GX across three explicit tiers in the same set: SR at #096/095, SR:SA at #097/095 and HR at #108/095. No other Unbroken Bonds TAG TEAM GX in this mapping repeats that three-tier split.

Is Full Metal Force the same set as Full Metal Wall?

Yes. Both names refer to the same Japanese set code, SM9b, catalogued under two different English romanisations of its Japanese title. Our own card-list article uses “Full Metal Wall” for this set.

What does “SR:SA” mean on a Japanese Double Blaze card?

SR:SA denotes a Secret Rare Special Art print — a secret-rare card with a distinct alternate illustration, sitting between the standard SR and the top-tier HR (Hyper Rare) print of the same card.

Can I buy PSA 10 graded Double Blaze cards from your store?

Yes — nine PSA 10 graded prints from this mapping are currently listed, across SM9a Night Unison, SM9b Full Metal Force and SM10 Double Blaze. Links to each are in the Where to Buy section above.

Where can I find the full Unbroken Bonds Japanese card list?
