Mew is the quietest expensive card in the Pokemon TCG. It never gets the marketing push that Charizard or Rayquaza get, but as the Mythical that started the entire “extra Pokemon” mechanic back in 1996, it has been reprinted at flagship rarity in nearly every major Japanese set since — from 2005’s Gold Star era through the 2021 25th Anniversary run to 2023’s Pokemon Card 151. #1 The Below-Market Grail: Mew VMAX HR SA (Fusion Arts 119/100)
Every Mew ranking starts here. Mew VMAX, card number 119/100, is the flagship pull from Japan’s S8 “Fusion Arts” set, released September 24, 2021 as a 129-card expansion. It carries HP 310, is Psychic-type, and packs two attacks — Cross Fusion Strike and a 130-damage Max Miracle — illustrated by AKIRA EGAWA. Japanese retailers list it as “Mew VMAX HR：SA,” combining the Hyper Rare classification with the Special Art treatment that gives it the alternate, full-frame illustration instead of a standard VMAX layout.
The English-language equivalent set is Fusion Strike, released two months later on 2021-11-12. Fusion Strike carries a regular Mew VMAX at 114/264 for reference, but the closest analog to the Japanese HR alt art is the secret-rare Mew VMAX 269/264 alternate art print pictured below — the same VMAX design rendered in Fusion Strike’s alternate-art treatment.
Here’s why this card leads the list. As of August 2026, SNKRDUNK’s asking-price data shows a raw copy of the Fusion Arts 119/100 at ¥149,800 (~$919), while graded PSA 10 copies are asking ¥310,000 (~$1,902), ¥340,000 (~$2,086), ¥395,000 (~$2,423), and ¥398,000 (~$2,442) — a tight cluster in the ¥310,000–¥398,000 range, with one outlier listing excluded as unrepresentative. Resale-market PSA 10 asks move independently for each seller, and a fresh graded copy entering the market at a lower price doesn’t get arbitraged away instantly — especially for a card that isn’t restocked on demand. If you’ve been watching this number climb toward ¥400,000, this is the entry point before it catches up.
#2–3 Pokemon Card 151: Mew ex SAR and UR
SV2a “Pokemon Card 151” is the set that reintroduced all 151 original Pokemon with alternate-art treatments, and it’s arguably the most collected modern Japanese set among international buyers. It released in Japan on 2023-06-16, three months ahead of the English “151” expansion (2023-09-22). Mew appears three times in this set at different rarity tiers, and the two chase prints both sit near the top of this ranking.
Mew ex SAR [205/165] is the Special Art Rare, confirmed under that naming by eBay, SNKRDUNK, and Meccha Japan listings. Like every Mew ex in the “151” family, it’s a Psychic-type Basic Pokemon ex with 180 HP and zero retreat cost, running the Restart ability (draw until you hold three cards, once per turn) alongside the Genome Hacking attack, which copies whatever attack the Defending Pokemon knows — a fitting callback to Mew’s in-game ability to learn any move. Mew ex UR [208/165] is the Ultra Rare tier of the same card, confirmed by CardRush, eBay, and Japanese price-tracking sites Pokeca Jira and FOLIVA. It’s the same stats and attacks as the SAR, in the UR gold-border treatment instead of the special-art illustration. #4 Mew “Mysterious Tail” UR — 25th Anniversary Collection (S8a 030/028)
Japan’s S8a “25th Anniversary Collection” set released in October 2021 as a 38-card booster expansion, paired with a separate 25-card “Classic Collection” promo subset (S8a-P) that uses its own numbering — the two are easy to confuse, but they’re distinct print runs.
Within the 38-card base set, Mew appears twice: a standard print at 002/028, and the Ultra Rare chase print at 030/028, nicknamed for its “Mysterious Tail” text (HP 60). This UR is what most collectors mean when they say “the 25th Anniversary Mew,” and it’s a compact, self-contained set card rather than part of a numbered mega-set like Fusion Arts or 151. #5–7 Promo, AR, and SSR: The Budget Tier

Mew ex promo [S8a-P 014/025] comes from the same October 2021 25th Anniversary promo card pack referenced above, distributed separately from the numbered S8a booster set. And at the entry point of the whole lineup: Mew ex SSR [SV4a 327/190] from December 2023’s “Shiny Treasure ex” set. This is the same Mew ex card design as the “151” SAR and UR — identical Restart and Genome Hacking text — reprinted at Super Secret Rare tier. Shiny Treasure ex actually contains three separate Mew ex rarities (076/190 RR, 327/190 SSR, and 347/190 SAR), and the 327/190 SSR is the one we carry graded, at ¥15,110 (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order) — the least expensive PSA 10 Mew ex in this ranking, and the easiest starting point if you just want a graded Mew ex in hand.
Heritage Mew: Gold Star and Ancient Mew
Two older Mew cards don’t fit the current graded lineup but belong in any serious ranking, because they’re the cards that built Mew’s reputation as a chase card in the first place.
Mew ★ (Delta Species) closed out the English-only EX Dragon Frontiers set as card #101 of 101 — the final slot in the expansion, reserved for one of the earliest “Gold Star” holo treatments in the game’s history. It’s a 2005–2006 era card, and to date it’s the only Mew Gold Star print that’s been found in this generation of research; there’s no evidence of a second one. Gold Star cards from this era are foundational chase pieces for long-time collectors, predating the alt-art and secret-rare conventions that define modern pulls.
Ancient Mew is older still, at least in cultural weight. It’s an unnumbered promotional card tied to Pokemon’s second movie, distributed in Japan in 1999 and internationally in 2000. Its defining feature is text rendered entirely in a rune-based cipher rather than any spoken language — a design choice that made it instantly recognizable and endlessly discussed among collectors who grew up pulling it from movie-ticket promos. Multiple print variants exist between the original 1999 Japanese release and the 2000 international version.
