Print History: The Six Regional Caps

071/SM-P is the first of six regional-cap variants distributed under the same campaign: Original (071), Hoenn (072), Sinnoh (073), Unova (074), Kalos (075) and Alola (076). All six share identical card text — Basic, Lightning-type, 70 HP — and the only thing that changes between them is the cap artwork on Ash’s Pikachu. None of the six is a stronger or weaker card than another; the difference is entirely cosmetic.

The Unova cap (074/SM-P) is the print our companion seven-print guide uses as its own example — it is not part of this article’s anchors, but it is currently listed on our site at ¥171,690 (~$1,080), PSA 10. It is shown above purely to illustrate how the cap artwork changes across the series. The remaining regional caps are also currently listed: Hoenn (072/SM-P) at ¥161,739 (~$1,017), Sinnoh (073/SM-P) at ¥174,640 (~$1,098), Kalos (075/SM-P) at ¥185,024 (~$1,164), and Alola (076/SM-P) at ¥177,000 (~$1,113), all PSA 10.

A seventh, unrelated-looking card — 086/SM-P, the “I Choose You” rainbow-feather cap — was distributed separately again: it went out through a theatrical “Special Jumbo Card Pack” sold at Japanese cinemas from 1 July 2017, a different distribution channel from the six regional caps and not one of this article’s anchors. It is also currently listed on our site, at ¥203,904 (~$1,282), PSA 10. 071/SM-P, the Original cap covered in depth in this article, sits at the front of that whole seven-print family.

The GX Companion: Ash’s Pikachu GX (SMD 005/026)

Ash’s Pikachu GX (サトシのピカチュウGX) is a different card entirely, from a different product, released a few months before the movie campaign began. It carries 170 HP, Lightning-type, and a GX attack called “Thunderbolt GX” (10まんボルトGX) that deals 200 damage but requires discarding all attached Lightning Energy afterward. This card comes from the “Ash VS Team Rocket” 30-card Half Deck (サトシ VS ロケット団, “Satoshi VS Team Rocket”), released 21 April 2017 — roughly three months before the movie itself and the six-cap SM-P campaign began. The half deck was a standalone Japanese product, never released outside Japan, and this GX card never appeared in any booster pack.

Our graded copy is currently listed at ¥313,125 (~$1,969), PSA 10. It shares the “Ash’s Pikachu” name and character with the 071/SM-P Original cap, but it is a separate card from a separate product, and the two should not be treated as printings of the same release.

Where These Prints Sit Among Japanese Promo Distribution Tiers

Neither of this article’s anchors came from a booster pack, so neither sits on the usual holo/rare/secret-rare ladder. Instead, Japanese promos like these are best understood by distribution channel:

• Retail campaign promos — the six 071–076/SM-P regional caps, given out for qualifying pack purchases at AEON, Ito-Yokado and Pokemon Center stores during a fixed campaign window.
• Theatrical promos — the 086/SM-P “I Choose You” card, sold in a jumbo card pack at cinemas rather than through a pack-purchase threshold.
• Half-deck-exclusive promos — Ash’s Pikachu GX (SMD 005/026), which only ever came bundled inside one themed deck product and never went through boosters or a retail giveaway at all.

None of these three channels makes one card objectively rarer than another in a documented, quantifiable sense — no published distribution totals exist for any of them. What can be said plainly is that today, all six regional-cap prints (071 through 076), the 086/SM-P theater card and the GX companion (SMD 005/026) are currently listed on our site; distribution channel does not correspond to relative scarcity.
