We’ve pulled twelve Japanese prints from illustrators and rarity tiers that consistently lean into character-driven, rounded, “cute” art direction — Character Rare (CHR) chibi treatments, Art Rare (AR) close-ups, and a couple of Special Art Rares (SAR) that fit the same mood. Every card below is a Japanese print, and every price is what we currently have listed, not a market estimate.

What Counts as “Cute” in Our Picks
“Cute” isn’t an official Pokemon TCG rarity, so this list is editorial — our picks, based on what we see customers ask for and what consistently sells well in the chibi and mascot-art space. A few patterns recur across the cards below:
- Character Rare (CHR). Introduced in the Sword & Shield era, CHR cards use a rounded, mascot-style illustration of the Pokemon rather than a battle pose — Mimikyu, Dedenne and Flaaffy on this list are all CHR.
- Art Rare (AR) close-ups. The more recent MEGA-era sets (M2 Inferno X, M2a MEGA Dream ex) use AR for full-illustration, close-cropped Pokemon art — Piplup, Psyduck, Wigglytuff and Team Rocket’s Mimikyu fall here.
- Baby and evolution-line Pokemon. Togepi, Cleffa, Igglybuff, Flaaffy and Psyduck are pre-evolutions or early-stage forms, which tends to push the art style softer and rounder regardless of rarity.
- Illustrator-led promos. The Yu Nagaba Eevee is a design collaboration rather than a rarity-driven chase card — it’s on this list purely for the art.

1. Mimikyu — SM11b Dream League, CHR 058/049
Illustrated by You Iribi and released 2 August 2019, this is the chibi Character Rare that most people picture when they hear “cute Pokemon card” — Mimikyu’s cape and stitched Pikachu-head disguise drawn full-body in soft colours. 2. Togepi & Cleffa & Igglybuff GX — SM12a Tag Team GX Tag All Stars, SR 186/173 (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order)
Three baby Pokemon sharing one Tag Team GX card, released 4 October 2019. This particular print (186/173) is the special full-art treatment by illustrator 0313, printed rarity SR — collectors often shorthand it as the “SA” copy, but the printed mark is SR. 3. Eevee — Yu Nagaba Promo, SVP 062/SV-P (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order)
Streetwear artist Yu Nagaba’s flat, graphic take on Eevee is one of the most distinctive promo designs Japan has released — it wasn’t distributed outside Japan. 4. Eevee ex — SV8a Terastal Festival ex, SAR 223/187
Illustrator tono’s Special Art Rare Eevee ex from Terastal Festival ex (released 6 December 2024) puts a whole field of Eevee evolutions around a soft, storybook-style Eevee. From the same 6 December 2024 set, illustrator Cona Nitanda’s Sylveon ex leans into pastel ribbons and a soft-focus background — it’s the pick we get asked about most from this set. 6. Piplup — M2 Inferno X, AR 085/080
Illustrator Jiro Sasumo’s Art Rare Piplup, from the 26 September 2025 M2 Inferno X set, is one of the more affordable entries here — a close, waist-deep-in-water illustration with no battle framing at all. 7. Psyduck — M2a MEGA Dream ex, AR 199/193

8. Wigglytuff — M2 Inferno X, AR 091/080 (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order)
Also illustrated by REND and from the same 26 September 2025 set as Piplup, this Art Rare Wigglytuff is the most affordable card on this whole list. 9. Dedenne — S8b VMAX Climax, CHR 200/184 (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order)
Illustrator kurumitsu’s Character Rare Dedenne, from the 3 December 2021 VMAX Climax set, is a full-body chibi illustration in the same CHR style as Mimikyu, though from a different Japanese set — VMAX Climax is one of the sets most collectors point to for CHR chibi art. 10. Flaaffy — S8b VMAX Climax, CHR 194/184 (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order)
Illustrator saino misaki’s Flaaffy CHR, from the same VMAX Climax set, is one of the more overlooked chibi cards on this list — a mid-evolution Pokemon rather than a well-known mascot, drawn tangled in its own wool. 11. Lillie’s Clefairy ex — SV9 Battle Partners, SR 115/100

No. It’s an editorial grouping we use for cards with rounded, mascot-style, or character-driven art — most often Character Rare (CHR) and Art Rare (AR) prints, plus a few Special Art Rares and one illustrator promo. It isn’t a set-defined tier.
What is a Character Rare (CHR) card?
CHR (Character Rare) is a Japanese rarity that uses a full-body, chibi-style illustration of a Pokemon rather than a battle pose. It first appeared in the Sun & Moon era — Mimikyu on this list is CHR from Dream League (SM11b, August 2019) — and continued into Sword & Shield sets; Dedenne and Flaaffy on this list are both CHR from VMAX Climax (S8b, December 2021).
Are these Japanese cards different from their English releases?
Card numbers, set names and release dates differ between the Japanese originals listed here and their eventual English printings, and the Japanese versions release first. We list the Japanese set code and number for each card so you can match it to whichever English set it later appeared in.

Why is the Togepi & Cleffa & Igglybuff GX card so much more expensive than the others?
That copy (186/173) is the special full-art print of the Tag Team GX card, printed rarity SR, illustrated by 0313. It’s a scarcer, more sought-after print than a standard-rarity chibi card, which is reflected in the listed price.
