This guide walks through every current Garchomp printing worth knowing if you’re buying Japanese cards: the Raging Surf ex line and its special-art reprint, the Star Birth base card, the VSTAR Universe V, the 25th Anniversary LEVEL-UP promo, and the Tag All Stars GX. Two things carry through the whole run. First, Garchomp keeps getting the same core Water-type ex build reprinted — the Raging Surf illustration by 5ban Graphics was carried over to Terastal Fest ex a year later, unchanged in effect. Second, the two prints we stock sit at opposite ends of the design spectrum: a current-format Special Art Rare and a nostalgia-driven LEVEL-UP promo built from a much older card. The sections below cover each print in order.
Raging Surf: Garchomp ex and the Special Art Rare
Raging Surf (SV3a), released September 22, 2023, gave Garchomp its current-format ex treatment: a Water-type Tera build with 320 HP and two attacks — Hydro Lander, which deals 160 damage and attaches up to three basic Fighting Energy from the discard pile to any of your Pokemon, and Sonic Dive. The regular RR print at 006/062 is illustrated by 5ban Graphics.
The 085/062 Special Art Rare is the same card mechanically, reillustrated by Oswaldo KATO in a full-bleed alternate frame. It’s this print that we currently carry graded — PSA 10 Garchomp ex SAR is currently listed at ¥16,871. Raging Surf also produced an SR (076/062) and a UR (090/062) of the same card, though we don’t carry those prints.
A year later, Terastal Fest ex (SV8a, December 6, 2024) reprinted the same card — same 5ban Graphics illustration, same attacks — at RR under card number 039. It’s a straightforward reprint rather than a new build, so if you’re deck-building for the current format, any of the three RR/SAR/reprint copies plays identically.
The Base Card: Star Birth Garchomp
Before the ex line, Star Birth (S9, released January 14, 2022) carried a non-ex Garchomp at 075/100, rarity R. It’s a Dragon-type, 160 HP, with the ability Rapid Sound — when this Pokemon evolves from a hand card, it prevents damage and effects from the opponent’s next attack against it — paired with the attack Dragon Blade, which deals 160 damage. Illustrated by Nurikabe, this print corresponds to Brilliant Stars #109 in the English-language set.
It’s the closest thing this lineup has to a “plain” Garchomp: standard card frame, no alternate art, no TAG TEAM partner. If you’re filling out a set run rather than chasing a specific illustration, this is the print to look for.
Garchomp V — VSTAR Universe
Garchomp V first appeared in Battle Region (S9a) before this reprint in the high-class pack VSTAR Universe (S12a), released December 2, 2022, at card number 109/172, rarity RR. It’s a Basic Dragon-type V with 200 HP, carrying two attacks: Dragon Claw for 120 damage, and Sonic Blade, which discards three attached Energy to deal 220 damage to one of the opponent’s Pokemon. Illustrated by N-DESIGN Inc.
Notably, this print stops at V — there’s no Garchomp VMAX or VSTAR in the current data set, which puts it in a different design lane from the ex line covered above. It’s the transitional-era print for collectors building out the V generation specifically.
The 25th Anniversary LEVEL-UP Promo
The other card we carry graded is a very different kind of Garchomp: Garchomp C LV.X, promo card 018/025 from the Promo Card Pack 25th Anniversary edition (S8a-P), distributed alongside the 25th Anniversary Collection set (S8a, released October 21, 2021). It’s a Colorless-type, 110 HP LEVEL-UP card with the Poke-Power Healing Breath — when leveled up from a hand card, it removes all damage counters from your Pokemon SP — and the attack Dragon Dive for 80 damage. Illustrated by Shizurow.
This print reproduces a Diamond & Pearl-era Garchomp C LV.X design under 25th Anniversary branding. We haven’t been able to confirm which specific Diamond & Pearl-period expansion or starter deck originally carried the source card, so we’re not going to guess — what’s confirmed is that this is a DP-era design reissued as a 25th Anniversary promo. Garchomp & Giratina-GX — the TAG TEAM Era
The earliest print in this guide is also the TAG TEAM entry: Garchomp & Giratina-GX, from the high-class pack Tag All Stars (SM12a), released October 4, 2019, at card number 099/173, rarity RR. It’s a Dragon-type TAG TEAM card with 270 HP, carrying the attack Calamity Edge for 160+ damage and the GX attack GG End GX, which removes one of the opponent’s Pokemon from the game entirely. Illustrated by Mitsuhiro Arita.
This card first appeared in Double Blaze (SM10), and corresponds to Unified Minds #146 in the English-language set. It predates the ex and V lines by several years and represents Garchomp’s GX-era design — paired art, a GX-only removal effect, and a card frame distinct from everything else in this guide.
Not This Card: Cynthia’s Garchomp ex
If you’ve seen a Garchomp ex with a Fighting-type Tera build and a trainer’s name in the title, that’s a different card from everything above. Cynthia’s Garchomp ex (SV9a 087/063, Heat Wave Arena, released March 14, 2025) is a two-stage Fighting-type evolution — evolving from Cynthia’s Gabite — with 330 HP and attacks Screw Dive and Dragon Buster. It’s part of the trainer-tagged card family rather than the standalone Garchomp line this guide covers.

Which Garchomp Print Matches What You’re Collecting
With only two of the seven prints in our own graded stock, this comes down to what you’re actually after rather than a price comparison:
- Current-format deck building. Any of the three Raging Surf / Terastal Fest ex copies (006 RR, 085 SAR, or the SV8a 039 reprint) play identically. If you want the graded Special Art Rare specifically, our PSA 10 SAR is currently listed at ¥16,871.
- Nostalgia and LEVEL-UP-era collecting. The Garchomp C LV.X promo is the one built from a Diamond & Pearl-period design, reissued under 25th Anniversary branding — our PSA 10 copy is currently listed at ¥10,053 (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order).
- Set completion. Star Birth’s plain 075/100 R print and VSTAR Universe’s Garchomp V (109/172) fill in the standard-frame and V-generation slots respectively.
- TAG TEAM GX collectors. Garchomp & Giratina-GX (SM12a 099/173) is the paired-art, GX-mechanic entry from 2019, distinct in both design and era from everything else here.

Number and set code, not artwork alone, are what separate these prints. The 006 RR and 085 SAR Raging Surf cards share the same stats and attacks — the difference is entirely in the illustration and rarity.
