Gholdengo (サーフゴー) is a Generation IX Pokémon, and the Japanese printings covered here date to Scarlet & Violet sets; the Gholdengo full art cards start with the Raging Surf SR (079/062). That makes it a compact character to collect: the five printings covered here span four sets released between September 2023 and December 2024.

Gholdengo Full Art Cards: The Raging Surf SR and Japanese SV Prints
Collectors use “full art” for prints whose artwork fills the whole card face. Japanese sets do not print those words: the official card database prints only a rarity code, and the full-art treatments are the SR (full-art ex and Supporter cards), SAR (Special Art Rare), AR (Art Rare), CHR / CSR (Character Rare) and the gold UR and rainbow HR printings. Among the Gholdengo prints covered here, the Gholdengo ex SR (Secret Rare) 079/062 from Raging Surf (SV3a) is the one with an art rarity code.
For how the treatments differ across sets, see our full art Pokemon cards guide.
Gholdengo in the Japanese TCG: Overview
Every Japanese Gholdengo and Gholdengo ex printing catalogued in this guide dates to 2023 or later. That keeps the character’s card history unusually easy to track compared to older Pokémon with a decade or more of reprints spread across generations.
Two forms appear among the printings covered here: the base Gholdengo (non-ex, appearing as an Uncommon slot or an unlisted-rarity slot) and Gholdengo ex, which has been printed twice at Double Rare and once at Secret Rare. Across the five printings, that’s a 3-to-2 split of Gholdengo ex cards to base Gholdengo cards — a fairly normal ratio for a Pokémon that debuted partway through a generation rather than in that generation’s launch set.
The four sets these printings come from also range widely in overall size: Raging Surf (SV3a) and Paradise Dragona (SV7a) are compact sets at 92 and 94 cards respectively, while Shiny Treasure ex (SV4a) is a 360-card release and Terastal Fest ex (SV8a) runs to 237 cards. That matters if you’re opening boxes for a specific Gholdengo card — a smaller set concentrates the odds across fewer total slots, while a larger set spreads them thinner.
Understanding the Rarity Tiers
If you’re new to Japanese Pokémon TCG rarity conventions, the ladder relevant to this guide runs, from most common to rarest: Uncommon (U) → Double Rare (RR) → Secret Rare (SR). Secret Rare cards are numbered past a set’s stated base card count — for example, Raging Surf’s Gholdengo ex Secret Rare sits at 079/062, well past the set’s 62-card base range, which is the standard tell for a set’s premium alternate-art or textured chase slot.
Of the five Gholdengo printings covered here, only one — 079/062 from Raging Surf — falls into that Secret Rare tier. The other four sit at either Uncommon or Double Rare, which are the standard-print, easier-to-pull tiers.
One naming note worth flagging: some card databases label the Raging Surf Secret Rare using a “Special Illustration Rare” or “SIR” tag borrowed from the English-language TCG’s rarity system. Limitless TCG’s Japanese card page for 079/062 does not use that label — it’s listed as Secret Rare.
Gholdengo Japanese Printings
The five printings covered here:
| Card | Number | Rarity | Set | Release |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gholdengo | 133/190 | Unlisted on card page (Bulbapedia lists Rare) | Shiny Treasure ex (SV4a) | 2023-12-01 |
| Gholdengo ex | 050/062 | RR Double Rare | Raging Surf (SV3a) | 2023-09-22 |
| Gholdengo ex | 079/062 | SR Secret Rare | Raging Surf (SV3a) | 2023-09-22 |
| Gholdengo | 038/064 | U Uncommon | Paradise Dragona (SV7a) | 2024-09-13 |
| Gholdengo ex | 117/187 | RR Double Rare | Terastal Fest ex (SV8a) | 2024-12-06 |
Note on the 133/190 Shiny Treasure ex printing: Limitless TCG’s individual card page doesn’t display a rarity marker directly — only the set’s Regulation Mark. Bulbapedia’s set list records it as Rare.
Raging Surf (SV3a) is worth flagging separately: its Secret Rare slot uses “Secret Rare” as the printed rarity designation on Limitless TCG, not “Special Illustration Rare” — a distinction that matters if you’re cross-referencing other card databases that use different rarity naming conventions.
The Base Gholdengo: Shiny Treasure ex (SV4a)

Shiny Treasure ex released on December 1, 2023, as a 360-card set, with Gholdengo at slot 133/190. It’s a large set with a deep card pool, and Gholdengo sits in the base numbering rather than in one of the set’s secret-rare or shiny-tier ranges — a straightforward, standard-print copy rather than a chase card.
If you’re trying to date a Gholdengo card someone is offering you without a visible set symbol, check the number: if it reads 133/190, you’re holding the December 2023 Shiny Treasure ex printing.
The Uncommon Slot: Paradise Dragona (SV7a)

Paradise Dragona released September 13, 2024, as a 94-card set, with a base-form, non-ex Gholdengo at 038/064 marked Uncommon. This is the most straightforward of the five printings — a standard-rarity card in a mid-sized set, and the only printing here confirmed at Uncommon rather than a chase-tier rarity.
If you’re assembling a set-by-set run of every confirmed Gholdengo card and want the least demanding pull to check off the list, this is the one: Uncommon slots are printed in higher volume within a set than Rare, Double Rare, or Secret Rare slots, so a Paradise Dragona box gives you a comparatively straightforward shot at 038/064.
Gholdengo ex Goes Secret Rare: Raging Surf (SV3a)
Raging Surf, released September 22, 2023, is where Gholdengo first got the ex treatment — and it got two printings in the same set. The 050/062 copy is a standard Double Rare ex, the tier most ex cards land at. The 079/062 copy sits in the set’s Secret Rare range, numbered past the set’s stated 62-card base count, which is the standard signal for a Japanese set’s premium alternate-art or textured chase slot.
This is the only Secret Rare Gholdengo printing covered here.
Because both printings share a set and a release date, Raging Surf is also the single most efficient set to target if your goal is simply “own a Gholdengo ex” rather than a specific number — it is the one set that prints both the 050/062 Double Rare and the 079/062 Secret Rare. The only other Gholdengo ex printing, 117/187 from Terastal Fest ex, sits in a separate set released over a year later.
Gholdengo ex Returns: Terastal Fest ex (SV8a)

Terastal Fest ex released December 6, 2024, as a 237-card set, and gave Gholdengo ex its second Double Rare printing at 117/187. This is the most recent Gholdengo card in this guide and, alongside 050/062 from Raging Surf, one of two standard-rarity Gholdengo ex cards to collect if you’re not chasing the Secret Rare.
At 237 total cards, Terastal Fest ex sits between Paradise Dragona and Shiny Treasure ex in overall set size.
How to Collect Gholdengo Cards
The practical path to any of these five cards is a sealed booster box from the set it was printed in, opened for a chance at that specific slot. Sourcing requests for a specific single go through Quick Order.
| Set | Set prints | Box price (JPY / USD) |
|---|---|---|
| Raging Surf (SV3a) | Gholdengo ex 050/062 RR & 079/062 SR | Sealed currently listed at ¥16,833 (~$109); No Shrink ¥12,897 (~$84) |
| Shiny Treasure ex (SV4a) | Gholdengo 133/190 | Sealed currently listed at ¥20,057 (~$130) |
| Paradise Dragona (SV7a) | Gholdengo 038/064 U | Sealed currently listed at ¥16,205 (~$105); No Shrink ¥13,723 (~$89) |
| Terastal Fest ex (SV8a) | Gholdengo ex 117/187 RR | Sealed currently listed at ¥21,641 (~$141); No Shrink ¥18,819 (~$122) |
Gholdengo ex 079/062 is a Secret Rare — Raging Surf is the set that prints both the 050/062 Double Rare and the 079/062 Secret Rare; a box gives a chance at either, not a guarantee. If you want to see the rest of what’s in these sets, our set hub pages break down the full card lists: Raging Surf (SV3a) card list, Shiny Treasure ex (SV4a) card list, Paradise Dragona (SV7a) card list, and Terastal Fest ex (SV8a) card list.
If you collect other Pokémon with multi-set Japanese printing histories, our Heatran cards guide and Froslass cards guide cover two more characters in the same format. Which Box Should You Open First?
Of the four boxes, the Raging Surf No Shrink option, currently listed at ¥12,897 (~$84), is the lowest-priced, and Raging Surf is also the set that prints both the Double Rare and the Secret Rare Gholdengo ex. The Terastal Fest ex Sealed option sits at the top, currently listed at ¥21,641 (~$141).
If your goal is completing the five printings covered here rather than chasing the rarest single slot, they come from four different sets. Raging Surf is the only set with two.
Where to Buy
