The Pokemon 30th anniversary has two dates in 2026, and both of them are correct. The franchise reached its 30th anniversary on 27 February 2026, and the trading card game reaches its own in October 2026.
The video games turned 30 on 27 February 2026, thirty years after Pokémon Red and Green launched in Japan on 27 February 1996. The trading card game turns 30 in October 2026, thirty years after the first Japanese Expansion Pack went on sale in October 1996. The Pokémon Company is treating the whole of 2026 as one long anniversary year, with a card set, events, concerts and campaigns spread from February to December.
We sell Japanese sealed product and graded singles out of Tokyo, and anniversary sets are a category we handle every week — the 25th anniversary line from 2021 chief among them.
2026 has two Pokémon 30th anniversaries: the franchise (27 February) and the TCG (October). The commemorative 30th CELEBRATION booster box (M6a) released worldwide on 16 September 2026 — the first global simultaneous release in TCG history, with the official card list (the main set and Classic Collection; PokeBeach’s compiled count for the whole set is 165 numbered cards plus 8 Basic Energy, 173 in all — PokeBeach’s headline figure is 176 — and the AR/SAR/FUR block 104–135 was not yet in the database as of 16 September 2026, even though all 32 had been seen) published on 9 September. The M6a booster box is currently listed in the Sealed and No Shrink options. The 2021 25th Anniversary Golden Box, one comparison point for how anniversary product ages, is currently listed as well.
- 30th CELEBRATION (M6a) released worldwide on 16 September 2026; the Premium Deck Set and the FUTURISTIC BOX released the same day in Japan.
- The M6a booster box is currently listed. Set reference: M6a card list.

Pokemon 30th Anniversary: Two Dates in One Year
The confusion exists because Pokémon’s two founding products launched eight months apart in 1996, so their 30th birthdays land in different parts of 2026:
| Anniversary | Original date | 30th milestone | Headline product / event |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pokémon franchise (video games) | 27 February 1996 — Red & Green, Japan | 27 February 2026 (Pokémon Day) | Yearlong #Pokemon30 campaign; first LEGO Pokémon collection |
| Pokémon Trading Card Game | October 1996 — first Expansion Pack, Japan | October 2026 | 30th CELEBRATION set (released 16 September 2026) |
The Pokémon Company itself frames all of 2026 as the anniversary year rather than a single day. Its press release for the campaign teaser describes a yearlong 30th celebration that kicked off with a Super Bowl LX television spot on 8 February 2026, under the official hashtag #Pokemon30.
For card collectors, the date that matters most sits in the middle: 16 September 2026, when the commemorative 30th Celebration expansion launched worldwide. We cover the set itself in our 30th Celebration complete guide.
27 February 2026: The Franchise Turns 30
Pokémon Red and Green released in Japan on 27 February 1996. That date became Pokémon Day, observed every year on 27 February — and in 2026 it marked exactly 30 years of the franchise.
The confirmed beats of the franchise-side campaign, all from official announcements:
- 13 November 2025 — the Western 30th anniversary logo first appeared with the Pokémon Day 2026 Collection reveal, per Bulbapedia’s anniversary hub.
- 9 January 2026 — the official Japanese site published its own 30th logo and anniversary video, confirming the 27 February milestone.
- 8 February 2026 — a Super Bowl LX spot opened the yearlong campaign, per The Pokémon Company International’s press release.
- 27 February 2026 — Pokémon Day: the franchise officially hit 30, and the first LEGO Pokémon collection released the same day.
Japan’s official 30th site also runs a monthly-theme format through the year (“a new theme announced every month”), alongside a campaign to collect 30th logo icons for all 1,025 Pokémon — a signal of how long The Pokémon Company intends to keep the anniversary in front of fans.
Note the detail that trips people up: there are two different 30th logos — a Western version and a Japanese version featuring Pikachu. Both are official; they simply serve different regions.
October 2026: The Trading Card Game Turns 30
The Pokémon Card Game arrived after the games: the first Japanese Expansion Pack — what Western collectors know as the Japanese Base Set — released on 20 October 1996 with 102 cards, per Bulbapedia’s set records. The official Japanese TCG side is more conservative about the exact day and simply states that the card game reaches its 30th anniversary in October 2026, as announced at the Pokémon Presents broadcast on 27 February 2026.

That same Pokémon Presents confirmed the shape of the celebration: commemorative products releasing worldwide during 2026, and — in the official wording — the first time a Pokémon TCG product would go on sale simultaneously around the world (excluding some regions). The nod to 1996 is built directly into the set: the 30th Celebration expansion includes 30 historic cards back in special-spec form, headlined by the Charizard from the 1996 first Expansion Pack.
A dedicated official site — the Pokémon Card Game 30th special site — carries the news, product pages and event listings for the TCG side of the anniversary. Per Bulbapedia, every card in the commemorative set, including the basic Energy cards, is holofoil and carries the 30th anniversary logo; on the official side, the Premium Deck Set’s tin double deck case and full-size paper playmat are described as carrying 30th logo and special anniversary designs.
For the longer arc of how these milestone sets evolved — 10th, 20th, 25th and now 30th — see our history of Pokémon anniversary sets.
16 September 2026: The 30th Celebration Set Launch
The anniversary’s flagship product line launched on Wednesday 16 September 2026 — the first global simultaneous launch in the TCG’s history. The confirmed Japanese release calendar:
| Japanese product | Release date | MSRP (tax-in) |
|---|---|---|
| MEGA Expansion Pack 30th CELEBRATION (M6a) — box of 20 packs | 16 September 2026 | ¥360/pack; ¥7,200/box |
| Premium Deck Set Espeon & Umbreon | 16 September 2026 | ¥6,200 |
| FUTURISTIC BOX | 16 September 2026 | ¥27,500 |
| 30th CELEBRATION Card Set (9 variants) | 16 October 2026 | ¥1,200 each |
The English-side schedule on the official product showcase runs across five dates, and the first two have passed: 16 September 2026 (Elite Trainer Box, Pokémon Center ETB, Sylveon ex / Greninja ex Boxes, Poster Collection, Tech Sticker Collections, Knock Out Collection, 2-Pack Blister), 2 October (Booster Bundle, Mini Tins), 30 October (Espeon ex / Umbreon ex Battle Decks), 6 November (Ultra-Premium Collections Day & Night, Ditto Premium Collection, Mew & Mewtwo Figure Collections) and 4 December (Binder Collection). Notably, no English booster box appears anywhere on that list.

Two date-related realities are worth knowing on the Japanese side. First, initial distribution was lottery-allocated: Pokémon Center Online ran a first lottery, then an additional lottery for the booster box and deck set with applications from 28 August 12:00 to 31 August 16:59 JST — a window that has now closed — with results from 4 September and delivery in November. A further Pokémon Center Online additional lottery, this time for the FUTURISTIC BOX and the Card Set, ran 11 September 16:00 – 16 September 16:59 JST, with results on 30 September, per SNKRDUNK’s lottery roundup (9 September 2026). Second, five physical Pokémon Center stores ran a pre-release purchase lottery (applications 21 August–8 September via the LINE mini-app, limit 10 packs per person, pick-up 16 September–4 October).
No reprint run has been announced for the Japanese products as of this writing. The official 30th CELEBRATION card list — all 103 main-set cards, the 30 Classic Collection reprints and the 8 Basic Energy — was published on 9 September 2026. Our M6a 30th CELEBRATION booster box is currently listed at ¥26,449 (~$172) for the Sealed option and ¥24,912 (~$162) for the No Shrink option.
The 2026 Anniversary Events Calendar
Beyond product, the anniversary runs through a series of dated events. The confirmed ones:
| Date | Event | Where |
|---|---|---|
| 8 February 2026 | Super Bowl LX spot opens the yearlong campaign | US broadcast |
| 27 February 2026 | Pokémon Day — franchise 30th; first LEGO Pokémon collection | Worldwide |
| From 20 March 2026 | Pokémon Card Game TOKYO LUMINOUS NIGHT projection mapping | Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building |
| 31 August 2026 | Worlds 2026 closing ceremony — new «ex★» series logo and Mega Lucario Z ex revealed | San Francisco |
| 9 September 2026 | Official 30th CELEBRATION card list published (165 numbered cards + 8 energy, 173 total; PokeBeach’s headline figure is 176) | Official card database |
| 11–16 September 2026 | Pokémon Center Online additional lottery window (FUTURISTIC BOX & Card Set); results 30 September | Online (per SNKRDUNK) |
| 16 September 2026 | 30th Celebration global launch | Worldwide (excluding some regions) |
| 16 October 2026 | 30th CELEBRATION Card Set release (9 variants) | Japan |
| 24 October 2026 | Pokémon Night Out concert | Intuit Dome, Los Angeles |
| 10 November 2026 | Pokémon Night Out concert | The O2, London |
The Tokyo event deserves a note for anyone visiting Japan this year. TOKYO LUMINOUS NIGHT Celebrating 30 Years is an official projection-mapping show on the east wall of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building No.1 and the Citizens’ Plaza, built around Pokémon card artwork from the earliest cards to the newest. It premiered on 20 March 2026 and as of 16 September 2026 the official special site listed it as running with no end date — media coverage lists showings at 18:30, 19:30 and 21:00 on weekends and public holidays, free with no reservation, though you should check the official site for current showtimes before travelling.
The Pokémon Night Out concerts in Los Angeles and London — headlined by Marshmello, per the official press release — extend the celebration into late autumn, which lines up with the TCG’s own October milestone. The Worlds closing ceremony on 31 August added a forward-looking beat to the anniversary year: the official announcement showed the logo of a new «ex★» series and named Mega Lucario Z ex, with further cards — including four Mega ex cards — visible only as card prints in the official video. No products, set codes or release dates have been announced for anything ex★-related.
What the 25th Anniversary Tells Collectors
Anniversary dates matter to collectors because anniversary product has a track record. The 2021 25th anniversary line — Japan’s s8a Expansion Pack, its promo packs and the Golden Box — is five years old and offers one historical comparison for how milestone sets age.
The 25th Anniversary Golden Box — the sealed premium item of the 2021 cycle — is currently listed at ¥191,835 (~$1,246).
The PSA10 Charizard 001/025 promo, the face card of the 25th promo line, is sold out at the time of this update — sourcing requests go through Quick Order. Both it and the Golden Box started life at ordinary MSRPs — the Golden Box at ¥17,600 via lottery, the promo as a free campaign insert.
