Look up “XY5” on an English-language price guide and you’ll find one set: Primal Clash. Look it up in Japan, and there is no single XY5 — there are two, released on the same day, built around opposite ends of the same game mechanic.
Gaia Volcano and Tidal Storm hit Japanese shelves together on December 13, 2014, each built around one half of a Primal Reversion pair — Groudon on one side, Kyogre on the other — with a Mega Evolution card riding alongside each. English collectors got all of it folded into a single 164-card set, Primal Clash, roughly seven weeks later. That split is the whole story of this guide.
We currently stock a graded PSA 10 secret rare from each side of the release. This guide covers how the two Japanese sets divide up, what makes each chase card worth knowing, and where the two currently-listed singles fit on price.
We currently list two PSA 10 singles from this release: M Gardevoir EX SR (076/070, Tidal Storm) at ¥103,000 and Genshi Groudon EX SR (074/070, Gaia Volcano) (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order) at ¥278,100. Both are graded, one-of-one listings — when a copy sells, it’s gone until we source another.
Set data is cross-checked against Bulbapedia and limitlesstcg.com’s card database, cited throughout. Pricing reflects our own current listings as of August 2026, converted at ¥163/USD for reference — the yen figure is the price that applies to a purchase.
One English Set, Two Japanese Releases
Gaia Volcano and Tidal Storm are Japan’s two-set answer to a single English release, Primal Clash. Both Japanese sets launched together on December 13, 2014 — unlike some other split Japanese releases where one half ships ahead of the other, this pair came out on the same day. Each set runs 78 cards by card-database thumbnail count, with a printed denominator of 070 on both — so a normal-rarity card tops out around 070, and anything numbered higher than that sits in the secret-rare band.
| Set (Japanese) | Set code | Release date | Cards | Focus |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gaia Volcano | XY5g | Dec 13, 2014 | 78 | Primal Groudon-EX |
| Tidal Storm | XY5t | Dec 13, 2014 | 78 | Primal Kyogre-EX |
The theme running through both sets is the video-game mechanic Primal Reversion, introduced the same year in Pokemon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire: Groudon and Kyogre each transform into a stronger Primal form, and the two Japanese sets translate that split directly into two separate card releases rather than combining it into one. The Mega Evolution lineup for the release adds a further layer on top — M Gardevoir-EX (covered in detail below) and M Aggron-EX round out the Mega Evolution cards across the two-set release.

The Gaia Volcano Side: Genshi Groudon EX
Gaia Volcano pairs a pre-transformation Groudon EX (073/070), also a Secret Rare, with the Primal-form Genshi Groudon EX (074/070), the set’s headline Secret Rare. The Primal card jumps to HP 240 and Fighting-type, sitting in the secret-rare band above the printed 070 denominator. Its English structural counterpart is Primal Groudon-EX, first printed as Primal Clash #86/160 (with a full-art Ultra Rare version at #151/160), and later reprinted as a Secret Rare in Ancient Origins (#97).
We currently list a graded copy of the 074/070 Secret Rare:

This is a graded, one-of-one listing — when it sells, it’s gone until we source another PSA 10 copy of the same Secret Rare. We’ve covered this card and its full Primal Reversion pair in more depth elsewhere; for the complete Groudon printing history, see our Groudon cards guide, and for how it sits alongside other XY-era EX and Mega EX cards, see our XY-era EX & Mega EX cards guide.
The Tidal Storm Chase: M Gardevoir EX SR (076/070)

Tidal Storm’s Secret Rare is the Mega Evolution half of the release: M Gardevoir EX, card number 076/070. Printed in Japanese as “MサーナイトEX” (M Sirnight EX), its card type reads Pokemon – Mega Evolution, and its text confirms it evolves from Gardevoir-EX, the Basic-stage EX version.
- HP: 210
- Type: Fairy
- Weakness: Steel · Resistance: Dark · Retreat cost: 2
- Attack — Brilliant Arrow (Fairy-Colorless-Colorless): does 30 damage for every Fairy Energy attached across all of your Pokemon in play — not just the ones on this card, which rewards building the whole bench around Fairy-type support rather than stacking energy on Gardevoir alone.
- Rarity: Secret Rare (SR)
- Illustrator: 5ban Graphics
- English structural counterpart: M Gardevoir-EX, Primal Clash #106
The 076/070 number sits well past the set’s printed denominator of 070, marking it as Tidal Storm’s secret-rare slot — the same numbering pattern that puts Genshi Groudon EX at 074/070 on the Gaia Volcano side.
Same rule applies here as with the Gaia Volcano side: a single graded copy. Once it sells, it’s out of our listings until another PSA 10 comes in.
Don’t confuse this 076/070 Tidal Storm copy with the later 057/054 M Gardevoir EX from Cruel Traitor (XY11) — that’s a separate printing, a year and a half newer, with a Fairy/Psychic dual-type instead of Fairy alone. Our XY-era EX & Mega EX cards guide covers the XY11 split release in detail.
Comparing the Two Secret Rares
| Genshi Groudon EX 074/070 | M Gardevoir EX 076/070 | |
|---|---|---|
| Set | Gaia Volcano (XY5g) | Tidal Storm (XY5t) |
| Type | Fighting | Fairy |
| HP | 240 | 210 |
| Rarity | Secret Rare | Secret Rare |
| Currently listed (PSA 10) | ¥278,100 | ¥103,000 |
Both are Secret Rares from the same two-set release, both are graded PSA 10 in our current listings, and both sit in the secret-rare band above their set’s printed 070 denominator. The gap between ¥103,000 and ¥278,100 isn’t a quality difference — it reflects how the two chase cards have traded independently since 2014, one built around a Mega Evolution attacker, the other around a Primal Reversion legendary.
How This Maps to Primal Clash in English
English collectors never saw a split. XY—Primal Clash released February 4, 2015 — about seven weeks after Gaia Volcano and Tidal Storm hit Japan — and folded both Japanese sets into one 164-card English release. Every card covered in this guide has a structural counterpart inside that single set: Genshi Groudon EX maps to Primal Groudon-EX (#86/160 in Primal Clash, with a full-art Ultra Rare version at #151/160, and later reprinted as a Secret Rare in Ancient Origins #97), and M Gardevoir EX maps to M Gardevoir-EX (#106).
That seven-week gap is the practical reason Japanese collectors and importers get first access to this artwork before it appears anywhere else. It’s a pattern that shows up across most Japanese-to-English Pokemon releases, not something unique to this set.
