The Chase: Rayquaza VMAX Alt Art, 083/067
In the Japanese Blue Sky Stream expansion (S7R), Rayquaza VMAX appears three times: the regular RRR at 047/067, and two HR secret-rare prints at 082/067 and 083/067. The 083 is the one everybody means when they say “Rayquaza VMAX alt art” — the full-scene alternate illustration that became one of the defining cards of the entire Sword & Shield era. Its English counterpart is Evolving Skies 218/203, illustrated by Anesaki Dynamic, with the rainbow-style secret sitting one slot below at 217/203.
What separates the Japanese 083/067 from most modern chase cards is how consistently it has behaved like a blue-chip: the English 218/203 became the face of Evolving Skies, and the Japanese first-print version rides the same demand with a smaller supply footprint. Blue Sky Stream has two HR-block Rayquaza VMAX secrets. If a listing just says “Rayquaza VMAX HR,” check the number: 083/067 is the alternate-art scene everyone chases; 082/067 is the other secret treatment of the standard artwork. The two are not priced alike.
Blue Sky Stream: the Set That Made It
Blue Sky Stream released in Japan in July 2021 as a 67-card expansion, feeding into English Evolving Skies the following month. Beyond the VMAX secrets, its secret block carries a run of full-art V and Supporter prints that have aged into chase cards of their own. Two of them are in our graded stock right now:

The Character Route: VMAX Climax CSR, 252/184
Five months after Blue Sky Stream, Japan’s VMAX Climax (S8b, December 2021) reprinted Rayquaza VMAX across its high-class checklist: a regular RRR at 120/184, a gold-style UR at 284/184, and the print collectors actually hunt from this set — the CSR (Character Super Rare) at 252/184, which frames the dragon in the character-scene treatment unique to this set’s secret block.
The CSR is the pragmatic answer to the alt-art problem: it delivers a scene illustration and a Japan-only secret rarity at a small fraction of the 083/067’s price. The Shiny-Black Icon: Rayquaza GX SSR, 240/150
Before VMAX existed, the modern Rayquaza grail was black. Japan’s GX Ultra Shiny high-class pack (SM8b, released November 2, 2018) introduced the SSR rarity — a dedicated tier for shiny Pokemon-GX with embossed holofoil treatment — and its shiny-black Rayquaza GX at 240/150 became the face of the whole concept. The black shiny recolor is one of the most recognizable in the franchise, and the SSR block of this set remains the canonical place to get it as a Japanese first print.
