Dialga’s signature effect has always been about time, and the Dialga full art cards covered here, the 2017 Dialga GX SR and the 2022 Origin Forme Dialga VSTAR HR and UR, carry it too. In 2015 the effect meant freezing an opponent’s evolution plan for a turn. By 2017 it meant taking an extra turn outright. By 2022, the same extra-turn idea had migrated onto a completely different card type — a VSTAR power called Star Chronos.
The seven Japanese Dialga printings covered here run from the Legendary Shine Collection original through the current Mega Brave era, including the two Origin Forme Dialga VSTAR finishes. We ship Japanese sealed product and singles out of Tokyo.
The seven Dialga printings covered here span 2015 to 2025, and the through-line is time manipulation — a hand-evolution lock in 2015, an extra-turn GX move in 2017, and the same extra-turn effect resurfacing on a VSTAR power in 2022. The Dialga full art cards covered here are the 2017 Dialga GX SR and the Origin Forme Dialga VSTAR HR and UR.

Dialga Full Art Cards: Japanese SR, UR and HR Prints
Collectors use “full art” for prints whose artwork fills the whole card face. Japanese sets do not print those words: the official card database prints only a rarity code, and the full-art treatments are the SR (full-art ex and Supporter cards), SAR (Special Art Rare), AR (Art Rare), CHR / CSR (Character Rare) and the gold UR and rainbow HR printings. The Dialga full art cards covered here are SR, HR and UR prints:
| Card | Set mark · number | Rarity | Illustrator | Our listing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dialga GX | SM5S · 069/066 | SR | 5ban Graphics | not listed |
| Origin Forme Dialga VSTAR | S10D · 082/067 | HR | 5ban Graphics | PSA 10 copy sold out at the time of this update |
| Origin Forme Dialga VSTAR | S12a · 260/172 | UR | AKIRA EGAWA | PSA 10 copy sold out at the time of this update |

The 2015 Original: CP2 Legendary Shine Collection

The oldest Dialga printing covered in this guide comes from the Legendary Shine Collection (CP2), released July 18, 2015 — a 27-card premium set where every card shares the /027 denominator. This Dialga is a 120 HP Steel type, illustrated by TOKIYA. Its attacks are Metal Claw for 30 damage and Time Freeze for 80, which also locks the opponent’s Active Pokemon out of evolving from hand. The English equivalent is XY Promo #77.
That locking effect is the earliest version of the time-control idea that runs through this whole guide — not an extra turn yet, just denial. For the rest of what shipped in the same set, see our CP2 Legendary Shine Collection guide.
Every card in CP2 shares the same /027 denominator, so the card number alone (017/027) is enough to confirm you’re holding the Legendary Shine Collection print rather than a later reprint.
Origin Forme Dialga VSTAR: UR vs. HR
Origin Forme Dialga VSTAR is the headline modern Dialga card in this guide, and it exists in two Japanese finishes — released about eight months apart in 2022.
Both printings are the same card mechanically: HP280 Steel, the attack Metal Blast for 40 plus 40 more per attached Steel Energy, and the VSTAR power Star Chronos, which lets you take another turn after this one. What separates them is the set and the finish. The earlier S10D Time Gazer HR was illustrated by 5ban Graphics and released April 8, 2022. For the full Time Gazer set breakdown, see our S10D Time Gazer best cards guide.
The later S12a VSTAR Universe UR was illustrated by AKIRA EGAWA and released December 2, 2022. For a full breakdown of this specific card — its ability text, artwork variants, and place in VSTAR Universe — see our dedicated Origin Forme Dialga VSTAR guide. VSTAR Universe is also home to Origin Forme Palkia VSTAR’s UR print; if you’re building the Origin duo, our VSTAR Universe best cards guide covers the whole set.
The Tag Team Era: Arceus & Dialga & Palkia GX

Before Dialga got a VSTAR card of its own, it shared a single card with two other Sinnoh legendaries. Alter Genesis (SM12), released in 2019, introduced Arceus & Dialga & Palkia GX — a 280 HP Dragon-type TAG TEAM card illustrated by Mitsuhiro Arita. Its attack, Ultimate Ray, does 150 damage and accelerates three basic Energy from the deck; its GX move, Alter Genesis GX, adds 30 damage to every attack for the rest of the game and lets you take an extra Prize card if you attach an additional Energy. This card was widely used as the core of tag-team decks built around Arceus, Dialga, and Palkia during the SM era.
It’s a different kind of card from the solo Origin Forme VSTAR — three legendaries sharing one body rather than Dialga acting alone — but it’s the printing most likely to come up if you’re researching Dialga’s competitive history in Japanese sets.
The Extra-Turn Lineage: Timeless GX to Star Chronos

The clearest example of Dialga’s time theme showing up twice, years apart, is this secret-rare GX card from Ultra Sun (SM5S), released in 2017. This 180 HP Dragon-type Dialga GX, illustrated by 5ban Graphics, carries Clock Up (draw back up to six cards), Rengoku for 80 damage, and a GX move called Timeless GX for 150 damage that lets you take another turn after this one.
That “take another turn” effect is the same mechanic that later became Star Chronos on Origin Forme Dialga VSTAR, five years on. The wording changed from a GX move to a VSTAR power, but the idea — Dialga bending the game’s normal turn order in its own favor — carried straight through. If you’re tracking Dialga by mechanic rather than by set, Timeless GX and Star Chronos are the two cards to know.
The 25th Anniversary Collection Print

Released October 21, 2021, the 25th Anniversary Collection (S8a) gave Dialga a 130 HP Steel-type card illustrated by 5ban Graphics. Its ability, Time’s Backflow, lets you retrieve one card from your discard pile, and its attack, Metal Blast, does 60 damage plus 20 more per attached Steel Energy. It’s a straightforward, mid-power printing rather than a chase card, but it slots neatly into the timeline between the tag-team GX era and the Origin Forme VSTAR era that followed a few months later.
Dialga in the Current Mega Era

The newest Dialga printing covered here comes from Mega Brave (M1L), released August 1, 2025, as part of the current Mega evolution era of the Japanese TCG. This 140 HP Steel-type Dialga, illustrated by Teeziro, carries M Beam for 30 damage and Chrono Burst, which hits for 80 — or 160 if you return all of your attached Energy to your deck. It’s a lower-rarity, current-standard printing rather than a secret rare, and it shows Dialga is still getting new Japanese cards in the present-day format, three years after Origin Forme Dialga VSTAR and a full decade after the CP2 original.
