Diancie Full Art Cards: The VSTAR Universe AR and Key Japanese Prints

Diancie Full Art Cards: The VSTAR Universe AR and Key Japanese Prints

None of the prints in this guide headline a set — Diancie shows up instead, print after print, across nine years of Japanese Pokemon TCG releases. That makes it an easy Pokemon to own a card of and a genuinely confusing one to identify, since a “Diancie ♢” from 2018 and a plain “Diancie” from 2024 are entirely different cards with entirely different mechanics. The Diancie full art card covered here is the VSTAR Universe Art Rare.

Like the rest of the franchise’s Mythical roster — see our Celebi and Jirachi Mythical Pokemon guide for the wider category — Diancie’s card history is spread thin across small print runs rather than concentrated in one flagship set. We ship Japanese sealed product and singles out of Tokyo.

Key Takeaway

Eight Diancie printings covered here span seven Japanese sets, from an undated XY Promotional Cards pair to the 2024 Stellar Miracle uncommon. The Art Rare from VSTAR Universe is the Diancie full art card covered here. Boxes carrying the other prints include the Forbidden Light box with the Prism Star Diancie and the Stellar Miracle box with the newest print covered here.

Diancie Full Art Cards: The VSTAR Universe AR and Key Japanese Prints

Collectors use “full art” for prints whose artwork fills the whole card face. Japanese sets do not print those words: the official card database prints only a rarity code, and the full-art treatments are the SR (full-art ex and Supporter cards), SAR (Special Art Rare), AR (Art Rare), CHR / CSR (Character Rare) and the gold UR and rainbow HR printings. Of the Diancie prints covered here, one carries an art rarity: the Art Rare (AR 186/172) from VSTAR Universe (S12a), illustrated by Haruko Ichikawa. The GX Ultra Shiny (SM8b 196) Secret Rare is a shiny reprint, not a full art card.

For how collectors use the term across Japanese and English sets, see our full art Pokemon cards guide.

Every Japanese Diancie Card and Its Print Details

Eight Diancie prints covered here, across seven Japanese sets, in release order:

Card Number Rarity Set Year
Diancie XY-P 53 Promo XY Promotional Cards —
Diancie XY-P 54 Promo XY Promotional Cards —
Diancie CP3 27 Uncommon Pokekyun Collection 2016
Diancie ♢ SM6 51 Prism Star Forbidden Light 2018
Diancie SM8b 196 Secret Rare GX Ultra Shiny 2018
Diancie S9a 35 R Battle Region 2022
Diancie S12a 186/172 AR VSTAR Universe 2022
Diancie SV7 58 Uncommon Stellar Miracle 2024

Two of these eight prints are the XY-P pair, which shares one illustrator and identical card text, while the other six are all distinct artwork. The 2022 pair (Battle Region and VSTAR Universe) is the one buyers mix up most often, since both are current-generation Scarlet & Violet-predecessor prints released the same year.

The XY Promo Pair: #53 and #54

Diancie [XY-P 53] (XY Promotional Cards)

Diancie, XY-P 53

Diancie [XY-P 54] (XY Promotional Cards)

Diancie, XY-P 54

The XY Promotional Cards (XY-P) pair carries XY-era promo numbering, 53 and 54, both illustrated by 5ban Graphics. Both are Fairy-type, 90 HP.

The card text of both matches the effect later printed in English as Phantom Forces #71 and reprinted as Generations #RC22, which puts them squarely in the XY era’s design language. If you want the fuller context for that block of Japanese releases, our XY-era Japanese Pokemon guide covers the sets and mechanics around them.

The First Dated Set: Pokekyun Collection (CP3)

Diancie [CP3 27] Uncommon (Pokekyun Collection)
Diancie, CP3 27, Uncommon — the first Diancie print with a confirmed Japanese release date, January 29, 2016

Pokekyun Collection (CP3), released January 29, 2016, is the earliest dated Diancie print covered here. Illustrated by Mizue, card #27 is an Uncommon Fairy-type at 90 HP, and its text lines up with the same Phantom Forces / Generations effect carried by the XY-P promos — making CP3 27 a same-text reprint rather than a new design.

Pokekyun Collection wasn’t a booster-box product in the usual sense.

The Prism Star Print: Forbidden Light (SM6)

Diancie ♢ [SM6 51] (Forbidden Light)
Diancie ♢, SM6 51 — the Fighting-type Prism Star print from Forbidden Light, released March 2, 2018

Forbidden Light (SM6), released March 2, 2018, gave Diancie its most mechanically distinct printing to date. Card #51, illustrated by kawayoo, is listed as “Diancie ♢” in the card database — the diamond symbol marks it as part of the Prism Star mechanic, though the database doesn’t carry a separate rarity-tier label for it beyond that name. It’s also a type change from every other Diancie on this list: Fighting instead of Fairy, at 120 HP.

The card’s ability, Princess Cheer, means while this card is on your Bench, your Fighting-type Pokemon’s attacks do 20 more damage, and its attack, Diamond Rain, hits for 90 while healing 30 damage from each of your Pokemon. That combination of a support ability plus a self-sufficient attack is unusual for a Prism Star card, most of which lean purely support.

Check This First

The diamond symbol (♢) after the name is the giveaway for this print — without it, you’re looking at a different Diancie card entirely, even if the artwork style looks similar at a glance.

The Shiny Variant: GX Ultra Shiny (SM8b)

Diancie [SM8b 196] Secret Rare (GX Ultra Shiny)
Diancie, SM8b 196, Secret Rare — the shiny-colored print from GX Ultra Shiny, released November 2, 2018

GX Ultra Shiny (SM8b), released November 2, 2018, is a high-class pack built entirely around shiny-colored reprints, and Diancie’s entry there is card #196 — illustrated by Akira Komayama and printed at Secret Rare, back to Fairy-type and 90 HP with the same text as the XY-P and CP3 prints, just in the set’s shiny colorway. The same set also carries a second, standard-colored Diancie at #94 with different artwork.

Secret rare slots like this one are exactly where identification gets easiest to fumble, since a shiny reprint and its plain counterpart can share a card number range but not the artwork. Our alt-art SAR cards guide covers how Japanese sets structure these secret rare and alt-art slots more broadly. GX Ultra Shiny isn’t part of our current sealed inventory.

Battle Region (S9a), released February 25, 2022, carries Diancie as card #35, Rare, illustrated by Yuu Nishida. Psychic-type, 90 HP, with an ability called Princess Curtains that blocks opposing Supporter cards from affecting your benched Basic Pokemon while this Diancie is your active Pokemon — a genuinely playable disruption piece rather than a purely cosmetic card.

VSTAR Universe (S12a, December 2, 2022) added a new Art Rare illustration by Haruko Ichikawa at #186 of 172, and reprinted Yuu Nishida’s original artwork at #63 — both carry the same Princess Curtains ability.

Sealed boxes for both sets:

The Current Print: Stellar Miracle (SV7)

Diancie [SV7 58] Uncommon (Stellar Miracle)
Diancie, SV7 58, Uncommon — the newest Diancie print covered here, from Stellar Miracle, released July 19, 2024

Stellar Miracle (SV7), released July 19, 2024, is the newest Diancie print covered here and the only one built around a damage-scaling attack. Card #58, illustrated by Jiro Sasumo, is Fighting-type again at 110 HP, with the attack Diffuse Reflection dealing 40 damage for every special Energy card in the opponent’s play area — a number that moves depending on how the opposing deck is built, rather than a flat total.

The SV7 Stellar Miracle booster box carries the newest print covered here. Mega Diancie ex has its own guide: our Mega Diancie ex SAR card guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Japanese Diancie Pokemon cards exist?

Eight prints covered here span seven sets: an undated XY-P promo pair (#53, #54), Pokekyun Collection (CP3 27), the Prism Star Diancie ♢ from Forbidden Light (SM6 51), a Secret Rare from GX Ultra Shiny (SM8b 196), a Rare from Battle Region (S9a 35), an Art Rare from VSTAR Universe (S12a 186/172), and an Uncommon from Stellar Miracle (SV7 58).

Is the Forbidden Light Diancie a Prism Star card?

Yes — it’s listed as “Diancie ♢” in the card database, with the diamond symbol marking it as part of the Prism Star mechanic. It’s also a type change from Diancie’s other prints, switching to Fighting-type instead of Fairy.

What’s the difference between the Battle Region and VSTAR Universe Diancie?

Same card text and ability (Princess Curtains), different set and artwork. Battle Region (S9a 35) uses Yuu Nishida’s original illustration; VSTAR Universe reprints that same art at #63 and adds a separate Art Rare version at #186/172 illustrated by Haruko Ichikawa.

When was Diancie’s first Japanese Pokemon card printed?

The XY Promotional Cards pair (#53, #54) is undated; Pokekyun Collection (CP3 27), released January 29, 2016, is the earliest dated Diancie print covered here.

Where can I buy Japanese Diancie Pokemon cards?

We ship Japanese sealed product worldwide from Tokyo. Booster boxes for Forbidden Light, Battle Region, VSTAR Universe and Stellar Miracle are listed, and sourcing requests for other prints go through Quick Order.

Which Diancie cards are full art?

Of the Diancie prints covered here, the full art card is the Art Rare from VSTAR Universe (S12a 186/172), illustrated by Haruko Ichikawa. The GX Ultra Shiny Secret Rare (SM8b 196) is a shiny print, not a full art card. Japanese databases print only the rarity label, not the words full art.
