The card that answers “most expensive Gengar card” is the Gengar VMAX SA, 020/019, illustrated by sowsow and classified as HR (Hyper Rare) by Japanese resellers. It comes from the High-Class Deck “Gengar VMAX” (set code SGG), released May 28, 2021 as a 60-card pre-constructed deck alongside the Eevee Heroes subset. The deck also included a regular Gengar VMAX at 002/019, Crobat V, Houndoom, Yveltal, and 11 Darkness Energy built around the “Single Strike” mechanic.

PSA 10 asking prices for the 020/019 SA cluster between ¥462,000 and ¥650,000 as of early August 2026 — a single isolated ask above ¥1,000,000 looks like noise and is excluded here. Raw copies are harder to pin down; we’re seeing single listings around ¥155,555, though that’s one data point rather than a market cluster.

The current Mega Gengar card of record comes from MEGA Dream ex (set code M2a), released November 28, 2025 — 193 base cards plus 57 secret rares for 250 total, and the set that introduced a brand-new rarity tier, MA (Mega Attack Rare), for the first time.

Mega Gengar ex appears twice in this set. The SAR at 240/193 is a Stage 2, Darkness-type Pokemon with 350 HP and the ability “Shadow Hide” (かげかくし) — while it’s in play, if your Dark-type Pokemon is Knocked Out by damage from an opponent’s Pokemon ex, the opponent takes one fewer Prize card than normal. SNKRDUNK raw asking prices for this card have run ¥41,000–¥55,000 across five listings, with PSA 10 clustering around ¥90,000 — a single outlier ask near ¥559,000 looks disconnected from that cluster and isn’t representative. The MA at 230/193 shares the same 350 HP, Darkness typing, and Shadow Hide ability, with an attack resellers list as “Void Gale.” As with any brand-new rarity introduced barely nine months ago, exact attack values are still being cross-checked across listings — treat specific damage numbers for this print as unconfirmed for now. It’s the more accessible of the two on the open market, though it’s also not currently part of our own listed inventory — the same Quick Order process applies.

Worth knowing if you’re building a MEGA-era Gengar collection: the same Mega Gengar ex character also headlined a separate pre-constructed product, Starter Set MEGA “Mega Gengar ex,” released September 5, 2025. Two Collector Notables — One Now Priced

Two more confirmed Gengar prints round out the verified list. We don’t have sourced current pricing for the regular Tag Bolt print or the Shiny Star V print below, but a graded PSA 10 of the Tag Bolt Special Art version is now in our own listed inventory.

Gengar & Mimikyu GX, 038/095 (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order) (RR / Double Rare), comes from Tag Bolt (SM9), released December 7, 2018 — a Psychic-type TAG TEAM card pairing two Ghost-type Pokemon from the core games, with a Special Art SA/SR version at 103/095. Reseller coverage frames Tag Bolt cards as no longer tournament-legal and unlikely to see a reprint of this exact TAG TEAM, though that’s reseller commentary rather than an official ruling, and we haven’t independently confirmed the reprint claim. A graded PSA 10 of the 103/095 SA/SR version is currently listed on our site at ¥620,444 (~$3,902) — the regular 038/095 RR remains unpriced here.

Gengar, 071/190 (R), from Shiny Star V (S4a, released November 20, 2020), is the plain, non-shiny Gengar in a set otherwise known for its shiny chase cards — per the official card database, it’s a Stage 2, 110 HP Pokemon with the ability “Life Shaker” (moves damage counters between your own Pokemon) and the attack “Hypnotic Wave” (90 damage, puts the Defending Pokemon to Sleep). We found no verified shiny- or secret-rarity Gengar in Shiny Star V, SV4a Shiny Treasure ex, or SM8b GX Ultra Shiny during this research — if you’ve seen a “shiny Gengar” claim tied to one of those sets, treat it as unconfirmed until a source turns up.
