The SM9 print’s existence is confirmed through Limitless’s card-search index, but we haven’t individually pulled its card page, so we’re not citing a rarity or illustrator for it here — these are the prints we’ve verified, not necessarily every Kabutops print that has ever existed in Japan.
Our vintage Kabutops single is catalogued on our own listing as “No.141,” but the 1997 Japanese Mystery of the Fossils expansion only ran 48 cards total, so No.141 can’t be that card’s actual position in the set. Treat it as our team’s internal catalogue reference rather than an official Japanese print number.
The 1997 Original: Kabutops in Mystery of the Fossils (PMCG3)
The earliest Kabutops print in this guide comes from the Japanese Mystery of the Fossils (化石の秘密, PMCG3) expansion, released June 21, 1997 — Japan’s third TCG set, and a 48-card checklist built around the Fossil-line Pokemon. Kabutops appears as a Rare Holo, Fighting-type card, corresponding to the English Fossil set (1999) print #9, also Rare Holo.

The modern Kabutops print comes from the enhanced expansion pack Pokemon Card 151 (SV2a), at card 141/165, illustrated by Souichirou Gunjima — a Rare, 160 HP, Fighting-type card. Awakened Psychic King (XY10) and a Further Sighting (SM9)
An earlier modern-era Kabutops print comes from the XY-block expansion Awakened Psychic King (XY10), at card 34, illustrated by Kyoko Umemoto — an Uncommon, 150 HP, Fighting-type card, ten HP below the SV2a print. This print is not listed on our site at the moment; sourcing requests go through Quick Order.
A further Kabutops appearance, card 59 of expansion pack SM9, is confirmed through Limitless’s search index, but we haven’t individually pulled that card’s page, so we can’t confirm its rarity or illustrator here. Chase Prints and What Makes Kabutops Collectible
None of the identified Kabutops prints sit in a secret-rare or alternate-art slot the way a modern chase card might — the highest-tier treatment on this Pokemon is a mirror-foil parallel rather than a dedicated special-art rarity. What separates the prints instead is era and finish.
