OP-17 vs OP-16: Which Japanese One Piece Booster Box to Buy (2026)

OP-17 vs OP-16: Which Japanese One Piece Booster Box to Buy (2026)

OP-17 vs OP-16 comes down to two mainline Japanese One Piece boxes that suit different buyers. OP-16 The Time of Battle — the Marineford set with the Admiral Super Parallels — is the settled, known quantity. OP-17 released in Japan on August 22, 2026 with a confirmed card list — two Secret Rares, a Pirate Crew Super Parallel pairing, four Manga finals, a Treasure Rare — and its secondary-market asks were already on the board.

Which one should get your budget? That depends far less on which set is “better” and far more on what kind of buyer you are. A player who wants cards in hand, a chase hunter aiming at the confirmed top-end, and a sealed collector building a shelf position each get a different answer.

We ship Japanese sealed product out of Tokyo. The OP-17 market figures here are asking/listing prices from the secondary market — not sales, and not our own price targets.

Key Takeaway

Want cards and a known chase structure? OP-17 released with its full card list confirmed: two Secret Rares (Rocks D. Xebec, Loki), a Pirate Crew Super Parallel pairing, four Manga finals, a Treasure Rare, and a Luffy Super Leader Parallel. Hunting the top-end? OP-17 is the pick — but its box asked well above MSRP on the secondary market. Want the value option? OP-16 remains the cheaper entry, with settled pricing behind it.

The Quick Answer, by Buyer Type

Match yourself to a row.

You are… Buy Why
A player who wants cards in hand Either Six known Leaders in each set — the choice is budget and Leader lineup
A chase hunter targeting the top-end OP-17 Two SECs, Pirate Crew Super Parallels, 4 Manga finals — a confirmed pool, not a projection
A sealed collector building positions Either — OP-16 is the cheaper entry OP-17 launched above OP-16’s price
A Marineford / Summit War collector OP-16 Ace and Blackbeard SECs, Admiral Super Parallels — the theme is the set
An Emperors-era collector (Shanks, Kaido, Big Mom, Whitebeard) OP-17 All 6 confirmed Leaders and 3 of 4 Manga finals are Emperors-adjacent
Buying both anyway One of each OP-16 is the value entry and OP-17 carries the confirmed chase pool

If you already know your row, the OP-16 box page is the place to start.

How the Situation Looked in August 2026

This was the state of play on August 24, 2026, in plain terms.

OP-16 The Time of Battle released in Japan on May 30, 2026. The set is fully mapped: the card list is public, the chase hierarchy is established, and the Japanese singles market has found its levels. Our Japanese booster box is currently listed at ¥10,437 (~$68).

OP-17 released in Japan on Saturday, August 22, 2026, with the English version following unusually fast — pre-release August 21 and full release August 28, a six-day JP/EN gap. The Japanese pack is ¥240 tax included for 6 cards and a box is 24 packs — which makes the box MSRP math simple: 24 × ¥240 = ¥5,760.

On the secondary market, sealed box asks on snkrdunk were ¥15,699–¥16,000 (about $99–$101) on launch weekend — roughly 2.7–2.8× the box MSRP. These were asking/listing prices, not a record of completed sales, and as with any new set they could move once more boxes were opened. That was the real comparison: a fully-known, settled OP-16 box versus a fully-known but freshly-priced OP-17 box, at very different price points.

What an OP-16 Box Offers

OP-16 is the Summit War set: Impel Down into Marineford, the arc that defined One Piece for a generation of readers. That theme gave it an unusually broad collector base at launch, and the structure backs it up.

The case for OP-16 comes down to three things:

  • Everything is known. The chase hierarchy — Admiral Super Parallels at the top, Ace and Blackbeard SECs, a Treasure Rare, Leader parallels — is fully mapped. You are not buying into reveal-cycle uncertainty; you know exactly what pool your packs draw from.
  • Both audiences showed up. OP-16 launched with collector demand (Marineford nostalgia, Ace, the Admirals) and player relevance (six new Leaders spanning aggressive red Ace to defensive Blackbeard control). Sets holding both tend to keep attention longer than sets with only one.
  • The entry price is lower. Pricing for OP-16 has settled and carries no secondary-market premium.

What an OP-17 Box Offers

OP-17 — searched in Japan under its set name 「世界最強の戦士」 — is built around the strongest warriors in the One Piece world, and it released in Japan. The card list is confirmed, and the reveals lean hard into the Emperors and the Rocks Pirates.

The confirmed chase structure:

  • Two Secret Rares — Rocks D. Xebec OP17-118 (blue) and Loki OP17-119 (black), each with a SEC-P parallel version.
  • Pirate Crew Super Parallel — a new 4th-anniversary treatment pairing EB04-061 Monkey D. Luffy with OP17-118 Rocks D. Xebec, effectively the set’s third secret-rarity-tier slot.
  • Four Manga finals (コミパラ) — Newgate (Whitebeard) OP17-005, Shanks OP17-022, Kaido OP17-062, and Charlotte Linlin OP17-112, all SR super parallels.

On the secondary market on August 24, 2026, base Secret Rares asked little — Loki SEC around ¥1,399 (¥3,600 for the SEC-P parallel), Rocks D. Xebec SEC around ¥2,750 (¥7,400 SEC-P) — while value concentrated at the top. Community-observed asks (unofficial, snkrdunk floors) ran from the Manga tier up through a seven-figure ask for the Luffy Pirate Crew Super Parallel:

Card Ask (snkrdunk) ~USD
Luffy Pirate Crew Super Parallel ¥1,300,000 ~$8,180
Rocks D. Xebec SEC-SP ¥540,000 ~$3,400
Shanks Manga ¥184,000 ~$1,160
Newgate Manga ¥120,000 ~$755
Luffy Leader Parallel ¥115,000 ~$723
Kaido Manga ¥85,000 ~$535
Linlin Manga ¥80,000 ~$503
Luffy SR-SPC ST31-004 ¥75,000 ~$472

Asking/listing prices only, not sales; unofficial secondary-market figures that could move as more boxes were opened.

Community pull-rate estimates (unofficial, and conflicting across sources) put the Pirate Crew Super Parallel around 1 in 338 boxes, the Manga tier at roughly 1 in 65–100 boxes depending on the source, and the Leader parallel around 1 in 6 boxes. Bandai does not publish official pull rates for any set — treat these as community estimates, not guarantees.

The English version pre-released August 21 and fully released August 28, 2026, at $4.99/pack MSRP — a six-day gap between the Japanese and English releases.

Our OP-17 pull rates and best cards guide tracks the chase pool as more boxes open, and the Japanese vs English comparison covers which version fits which buyer given the tight release gap.

The Decision Framework, in Detail

Profile 1: The player who wants cards in hand

Answer: either. This is no longer the arithmetic problem it was before release. OP-16 gives six known Leaders across the color spectrum — from Ace’s aggressive red pressure to Blackbeard’s defensive redirection — and a mapped card pool. OP-17 gives six known Leaders too — Newgate, Shanks, Rocks D. Xebec, Kaido, Luffy, and Linlin — and a fully confirmed card list. The remaining question is budget and which Leader lineup you want to build around.

Profile 2: The chase hunter aiming at the top-end

Answer: OP-17 — and expect to pay a real premium for it, not a hypothetical one. OP-16’s chase pool is settled; its discovery phase is closed. OP-17’s discovery phase had just opened, and the confirmed top end was on the board: two Secret Rares (Rocks D. Xebec, Loki), a Pirate Crew Super Parallel pairing asking a seven-figure sum for the Luffy card, four Manga finals asking ¥80,000–184,000, a Treasure Rare, and a Super Leader Parallel Luffy. None of that was projection — it was what the secondary market was asking at the time. The trade-off is price: box asks ran well above MSRP. If you are hunting the top-end, that premium is the cost of entry, not a red flag — see the open points below for what could still move.

Profile 3: The sealed collector

Answer: either box qualifies — and the age profile of the mainline sets is worth reading carefully. The Japanese mainline boxes, oldest to newest:

Set Age profile
OP-01 Romance Dawn Aged, first mainline set
OP-05 Aged, high-demand set
OP-11 Aged, high-demand set
OP-14 Recent
OP-15 Recent
OP-16 Recent
OP-17 Most recent in this lineup
The Shape of the Curve

Older, high-demand sets — OP-01, OP-05, OP-11 — carried the highest listing prices in the store’s August 3, 2026 price snapshot. The most recent sets sat lower, and the entry price rose from OP-16 to OP-17. Launch-window boxes have historically sat toward the cheaper end of this curve, but OP-17 shows that isn’t guaranteed for every set — nothing about future pricing is promised here.

The entry cost of a sealed position is not automatically lowest during a launch window: OP-17 launched above OP-16’s price. OP-16 still offers the cheaper entry and a Marineford anchor; OP-17 offered a confirmed Emperors-heavy top-end at a real premium. A sealed collector’s honest play is about entry price and theme conviction — but “launch window means cheap” is not a safe assumption for every set. Buying one of each remains a coherent position — and for volume buyers, our OP-17 case buying guide covers how case economics change the math against real, not projected, chase-card asks.

Open Points About OP-17 in the Original Comparison

Most of what had been unknown about OP-17 was settled: the card list, the Leader lineup, the confirmed chase tier, and real secondary-market asks. A few points were still genuinely open:

  • Pull rates remained unofficial and conflicting. Bandai does not publish pull rates. Community estimates for the Manga tier ranged from roughly 1 in 65 to 1 in 100 boxes depending on the source, and estimates for the Pirate Crew Super Parallel (~1 in 338) and Leader parallel (~1 in 6) came from single-site tracking. Treat all of these as directional, not guaranteed.
  • Whether the secondary-market asks would hold. The box asks and the chase-card asks above were not a settled price. Asking prices for new sets can move once more boxes are opened and supply becomes clearer; we are not forecasting where this settles.
  • The exact scope of the “third secret-rarity slot.” Secondary sources describe the Pirate Crew Super Parallel as effectively the set’s third SEC-tier slot; that description comes from those sources, not from Bandai’s own wording. Likewise, a “177 types including parallels” figure circulates in secondary aggregations but is not an official Bandai count.

The practical translation: decide what a chase card is worth to you before you buy or open boxes chasing it. The OP-17 release hub tracks allocations and the secondary market.

These boxes are not really competing for the same yen. OP-16 is a resolved product at a settled, lower price; OP-17 is a resolved product at a premium. The buyers who should think hardest are those with a single-box budget and no strong buyer-type identity — for them, the tiebreaker is price and chase appetite, not uncertainty.

Ordering From Tokyo

Whichever way you land, three practical notes for overseas buyers of Japanese product:

  • Sealed condition travels with the box. Japanese boxes ship shrink-wrapped, and a crushed corner affects a sealed box’s collectibility even though the cards inside are fine. We pack for international transit accordingly.
  • Consolidate. Ordering several boxes together in one shipment costs meaningfully less than separate shipments.
  • Chase cards carried real premiums. If you are buying loose OP-17 chase cards rather than sealed boxes, use those asks as reference points, not fixed targets, since secondary asks can move as more boxes open.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I buy an OP-16 or OP-17 booster box?

It comes down to buyer type. OP-16 has a fully settled card list and is the value pick for players and budget-conscious sealed buyers. OP-17 has a confirmed chase pool (two Secret Rares, a Pirate Crew Super Parallel pairing, four Manga finals, a Treasure Rare) that asked well above MSRP on the secondary market — the pick for chase hunters willing to pay a premium.

What OP-17 chase cards are confirmed?

Confirmed: two Secret Rares, Rocks D. Xebec OP17-118 (blue) and Loki OP17-119 (black), each with a SEC-P parallel; a Pirate Crew Super Parallel pairing of EB04-061 Monkey D. Luffy and OP17-118 Rocks D. Xebec; four Manga finals — Newgate OP17-005, Shanks OP17-022, Kaido OP17-062, and Charlotte Linlin OP17-112; a Super Leader Parallel Luffy OP17-079; a Treasure Rare, OP17-033 Lucky Roux; and an insert Luffy SR-SPC 新四皇 Special Card, ST31-004.

Does it make sense to buy both boxes?

Yes. OP-16 gives a settled value pick, and OP-17 gives the confirmed chase pool.

Store USD figures convert at ¥154/USD, approximate; the USD figures for secondary-market asks keep the ¥159/USD rate they were written at.
