Volcanion EX SR 055/054 (Fever-Burst Fighter, 1st Edition) Card Guide

Volcanion EX SR 055/054 (Fever-Burst Fighter, 1st Edition) Card Guide

Volcanion EX comes from a Japanese release that split itself in two on the very same day. That split is the first thing to understand about this card, because it explains why its rarity slot, its set name, and its English-language history are more tangled than most XY-era Secret Rares.

The card is ボルケニオンEX — Volcanion EX, card 055/054, printed as a Secret Rare in one half of a twin Japanese release dated 17 June 2016. We currently list a PSA 10, 1st Edition, graded and shipped from Tokyo, and this guide covers what the card does, which of the two twin sets it actually belongs to, how the single English-language set absorbed both halves, and where this Secret Rare sits against the other graded chase cards from the same release day.

Key Takeaways

Volcanion EX SR 055/054 is a PSA 10, 1st Edition, currently listed at ¥37,399 (~$235) (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order). It comes from the Japanese set internally coded XY11b — Bulbapedia’s “Fever-Burst Fighter” translation, one half of a same-day twin release with a 54-card main numbering and secret-numbered cards above it. Its headline chase card is PSA 10 M Steelix EX SR 057/054, currently listed at ¥66,000 (~$415).

The Card: Volcanion EX 055/054 Secret Rare

Volcanion EX is a Basic Pokémon with dual Fire/Water typing and 180 HP. Its Ability, スチームアップ (Steam Up), lets you discard 1 Fire Energy from your hand once per turn to add 30 damage to a Fire-type Basic Pokémon’s attack. Its attack, ボルカニックヒート (Volcanic Heat), costs RRC for 130 damage but leaves Volcanion EX unable to attack on the following turn. It is weak to Water, has a retreat cost of 3, and the 055/054 print is illustrated by 5ban Graphics.

The card’s position at #055 in a set whose main run tops out at 054 is the standard Japanese convention for a secret slot — a print placed one number past the official count, which is exactly where this Secret Rare sits.

The Set: XY11’s Twin Release

XY11 is not one set but two, released together on 17 June 2016, each carrying the same /054 print denominator and totalling 58 cards by card-database count. One half is Cruel Traitor (冷酷の反逆者, internal code XY11r), headlined by M Gardevoir EX. The other — the half Volcanion EX belongs to — is internally coded XY11b, headlined by M Steelix EX.

The English translation of XY11b’s Japanese name is where things get genuinely ambiguous. Bulbapedia translates it as Fever-Burst Fighter (爆熱の闘士), which we use as our own primary label; Limitless’s card database internally titles the same set “Heat Burst Fighter”; and “Explosive Fighter” appears elsewhere on our own site. None of these three is a name the Pokémon Company itself has published, because this Japanese set never received its own standalone English-language release — it was folded into a combined English set instead, which the next section covers.

XY11’s June 2016 release date sits inside the documented era in which Japanese Pokémon cards carried a 1st Edition stamp, which ran from 2001 through December 2016. Our own listed print of Volcanion EX confirms the :1ED mark on its product title, consistent with that window. For the broader mechanics of how that stamp works and which sets carry it, see our Japanese 1st Edition Pokémon cards guide.

Japanese vs English Print

Volcanion EX does have an English-language equivalent, but it does not map onto a matching English twin release. Instead, both Japanese halves — Cruel Traitor and Fever-Burst Fighter — were combined into a single English set: Steam Siege (STS), a 116-card set released 3 August 2016, roughly seven weeks after the Japanese twin release. Volcanion EX appears there in three separate printings: a regular card at #26, a Full Art (Ultra Rare) print at #107, and a Secret Rare print at #115.

That combination is the direct consequence of Fever-Burst Fighter never getting its own standalone English release: rather than two English sets mirroring the two Japanese ones, Pokémon’s English-language arm merged both card pools into one. If you are trying to match our Japanese Secret Rare 055/054 against an English collection, the closest rarity-tier equivalent is Steam Siege #115 (Secret Rare) or the Full Art #107 — not the regular #26.

Where This Secret Rare Sits Among Japanese Chase Rarities

Volcanion EX 055/054 sits at the Secret Rare tier — a print numbered past the set’s own 054-card count, the standard placement for a set’s secondary chase slots in this era of Japanese releases. Within the same twin release, it shares that tier with M Steelix EX 057/054 (its own set-half’s headline Secret Rare) and M Gardevoir EX 057/054 (the sibling set’s headline Secret Rare), and our own graded catalogue prices reflect how those three sit relative to one another.

Both siblings carry a higher graded listing price than Volcanion EX’s ¥37,399 (~$235), which fits their role as each set-half’s own headline chase card, next to Volcanion EX’s supporting-cast position within Fever-Burst Fighter’s 58-card pool. Frequently Asked Questions

What is Volcanion EX SR 055/054?

It is the Secret Rare print of Volcanion EX (ボルケニオンEX), card 055/054 from the Japanese half-set internally coded XY11b (Bulbapedia’s “Fever-Burst Fighter”), released 17 June 2016. Our graded print is a PSA 10, 1st Edition, currently listed at ¥37,399 (~$235).

What does “Fever-Burst Fighter” mean, and is it an official set name?

No. “Fever-Burst Fighter” is Bulbapedia’s translation of the Japanese title 爆熱の闘士, used as our own primary label. Limitless’s card database calls the same set “Heat Burst Fighter” internally, and “Explosive Fighter” appears elsewhere on our site. None is a name the Pokémon Company has published, since this Japanese set never got its own standalone English-language release.

Why did XY11 release as two separate sets on the same day?

XY11 split into Cruel Traitor (headlined by M Gardevoir EX) and Fever-Burst Fighter (headlined by M Steelix EX, and home to Volcanion EX), both released 17 June 2016 with matching /054 denominators and 58-card counts. Both halves were later combined into a single English set rather than getting separate English releases.

Does Volcanion EX have an English print?

Yes — it appears in Steam Siege (STS), a 116-card English set released 3 August 2016 that combined the card pools of both Japanese XY11 halves, across three printings: regular #26, Full Art (Ultra Rare) #107, and Secret Rare #115. The Secret Rare #115 is the closest rarity match to our Japanese SR 055/054, not the regular #26.

Is the listed copy 1st Edition?

Our listed print is confirmed :1ED on its own product title, which is consistent with XY11’s June 2016 release date sitting inside the documented Japanese 1st Edition stamp era of 2001 through December 2016.

Where can I buy a PSA 10 Volcanion EX from Tokyo?

Our graded 055/054 Secret Rare print is currently listed at ¥37,399 (~$235) with tracked shipping from Tokyo. A sealed vintage booster box for this set is not currently listed; sourcing requests go through our Quick Order page.
